buenymayor Aug 20th, 08, 08:54 PM Anyone know where #62 is? Supposedly it's engine is in a car on eBay right now.

barnfind69 Aug 20th, 08, 10:12 PM No idea :(
But whoever has would find that car/engine invaluable:yes:
JOE58 Aug 21st, 08, 05:29 AM In the ebay ad he values a ZL1 at over $800K and I think some have gone that high but one recently sold for $480K
even if you have ZL1 62, I think a buy-it-now of $155K is pretty steep for that car.
What would the engine be worth? maybe $30K to $50K?
What is the ebay car worth with out engine? $30K to $40K?
How much value is added to ZL1 62 if original engine is installed vs a replacement engine?
novamob Aug 21st, 08, 07:24 AM I think that it went through Barrett Jackson Jan 08 (or 07) in the 105-120 range. It was built in Ga & I've always wondered why the owners can't get together on an engine swap with cash.
1968Motion427SSNova Aug 21st, 08, 07:41 AM Wouldn't a fair price for the original Zl1 block for one of the 69 Production ZL1 Camaro be worth 10% of the value of the car? Ed Cunneen told me its the 3 digit assembly code below the casting date that he looks for.
clill Aug 21st, 08, 08:12 AM ZL1's are valued more for their options, colors and condition than they are for the orig. engine. A orig. engine is great for documenting a car but the ZL1's are known by their vin and don't need the orig. engine to prove the car. The RS ZL1 sold for 800K and the block for it was bought for 25 or 30K but the block floated around for years because of sellers thinking it was worth 10% etc. I would rather have a good ZL1 with the wrong engine than have a crappy one with the right engine.
1968Motion427SSNova Aug 21st, 08, 09:09 AM But then again, nothing like having the "Born With Block" back in the car! Hey didn't Reggie Jackson go thru major extremes to save a Original Damaged ZL1 block? Lamars Waldrons car?? Magazine article? Charlie,How many 69 ZL1 Camaros have their original block back in their engine bay? Anyone keep account of this? Thanks Charlie for your input! Dan
cjm465 Aug 21st, 08, 09:16 AM The replica car went through Mecum Auction (Florida) in January with a high bid of $125,000. Car did not sell.
tumper Aug 21st, 08, 11:57 AM Not sure if all this artical says is true but according to it because the cars with the ZL1 option was so high, the engines were removed and cars returned to GM.....
Overshadowing these dealer modified Camaros was the factory Camaro ZL1. Specially designed to compete in the NHRA Super Stock drag classes, Chevrolet made it an option under the COPO system (code 9560). The cars began as SS396/375bhp Camaros with the F41 suspension. The SS trim and engine were deleted, and the 427 engine, cowl-induction hood, front disc brakes, a choice of heavy duty 4 speed transmissions or Turbo Hydra-matic, and a 4:10 posi axle were added. But instead of the regular iron-block and head L72 found in the dealer installed Camaros, the ZL1 sported aluminum heads and the first aluminum block ever made by Chevrolet. It shared the L88 aluminum head/iron block's engine rating of 430 bhp but made closer to 500 bhp -- making it probably the most powerful engine Chevrolet ever offered to the public. And the engine weighed just 500 pounds, the same as Chevy's 327 small block. The car was blessed with a 5 year/50,000 mile warranty and was fully street legal. With factory exhausts and tires, it turned low 13s; with headers and slicks, it could turn 11.6s @ 122mph. This was the fastest car ever produced by Chevrolet. Performance had its price -- $4,160 for the ZL1 engine alone pushing the price of the Camaro ZL1 to an unbelieveable $7,200 (about double the price for a SS396 Camaro). Chevy needed to build 50 to qualify the car for racing, and in the end built 69 Camaros and 2 Corvettes with the ZL-1 engine. Their high price made them difficult to sell and at least 12 engines were removed and about 30 cars were returned back to Chevrolet. It took until the early 1970s to sell them all. One can only wonder what they are worth today.

novamob Aug 21st, 08, 02:13 PM The Red tribute with #62 block sold for $122K at Barrett-Jackson, Scottsdale 2007
Dan, Reggies block cost some money to build because it was just a bare block and not sleeved. Lamar told me it was the original block to #51, but it turned out to be 1 of 5 blocks that Lamar got with the car. I'm not sure if Lamar or Gary G has the original/born with engine, but I know Reggie flew in to discuss it with both of them.
This proved to be unfortunate for Reggie as (I think) it stopped the BJ auction of his #51 car after it hit around 800K.
jd502 Aug 21st, 08, 02:36 PM Does anyone have idea how many ZL-1s have there original motors? that ad says 3, I know its more than that. In my opinion a complete Zl1 motor for a specific # car, via #62 should be worth at least 50k . How much would that car go up in value from it. IMHO:D
clill Aug 21st, 08, 03:14 PM If a ZL1 engine to put in a clone is worth 30K and it's worth 50K to the ZL1 it was born in, that is only a 20K premium. A pretty minor amount compared to the overall value of the car. Is the car worth 50K more ? Probably.
1968Motion427SSNova Aug 21st, 08, 03:19 PM Charlie,You probably seen me mention in the past I found Ed Cunneens ZL1 block. Put Ed in touch with the guy, last time I called ,which is 2 weeks ago Ed never purchase the block.Guy wants 10% of the value of the car for the block.I believe 3 years ago when I first put Ed in touch with him that wouldn't been cheaper, right? Dan
jd502 Aug 21st, 08, 03:47 PM I think if the car only needs the motor to 100% correct ,10% is fair. IMHO.
GenOne Aug 22nd, 08, 01:59 PM I agree with the 10% - the engine is a critical part of the package in my book.
rich pern Aug 22nd, 08, 10:08 PM I agree, while a ZL1 body is special, it was the alum 427 that made it a ZL1. I (which is just my opinion, not that I am pushing it on anyone else) think that I would rather have a 6 banger with all of the driveline from a real ZL1, than a ZL1 body with a clone 427/driveline.

Stefano Aug 22nd, 08, 11:22 PM Has anyone verified that this is indeed the original engine to number 62?
William Aug 23rd, 08, 01:53 PM The poor photo of the pad does not depict an original equipment ZL-1 engine in my opinion.
Based on OE engines in other ZL-1s built at the same time [05A] I would expect to see
T04xxML or T05xxML on the pad. The numbers shown make no sense.
The only way to know this is the #62 engine would be a partial VIN stamp on the block.
1968Motion427SSNova Aug 23rd, 08, 02:28 PM William,You got me thinking, you know I found the original owner of the Blue Hauser Zl1 car and he sent me a copy years back of the Hauser invoice on the car.Gives the T0xxxML stamp on the invoice for the car. Also there is a charge for P/Disc of 64.25. Theres a charge of 55.00 for Tach,63.05 for WWalls and 195.40.Did all the Chevrolet Dealerships that sold the ZL1 Camaros list the engine Stamp with Date on their invoice when sold? Dan
William Aug 23rd, 08, 05:29 PM That was not a common dealership practice with any car. The check-in sheet copy for the original owner had a spot for the pop imprint but most did not bother.
The owner of that car [#43] was in contact with me last spring. He has this theory that the car was stolen to provide a spare engine for the house ZL-1 race car, #4. However his ZL-1 was stolen in 1972 and #4 was long gone by then. Never located, still titled to an insurance company.
1968Motion427SSNova Aug 23rd, 08, 05:59 PM William,John told me in a recent call that he finally talked to you.I told him a few years ago about the history of the Silver auto ZL1 and Len S getting it from Hauser to race thru Ben Moore.Told him about you and your friend ownng the silver ZL1 car.Yeah,I agree with you No way that was the back up motor for Len S's Hauser's Chevrolet Silver ZL1 Camaro. Hey this invoice has the stock number on it which is in the ad I found in the Bethelhem Globe Newspaper ad from 1969.Remember this ad,that and the silver ZL1 ad convinced Ed Cunneen that Hauser had 2. I told John Len didn't do it.I have my own idea what happened to the car though.Still digging though, never know, someday? Dan
1968Motion427SSNova Aug 23rd, 08, 06:10 PM William,As far as him with dates of when it was stolen, that I question, because of things he told me.I'll just leave it at that for now.He says he found pictures and wants to meet me in person since you told him I would be the guy to find more info with all the research I did on Hauser Chevrolet,Ben Moore and the ZL1 cars. Dan
98blackburb Aug 23rd, 08, 08:10 PM Here is 1 of the 2 ZL1 Corvettes....sold near me at a gov't auction a few years back,he got a hell of buy back then . Gov't seized the car because it was a Drug dealer convicted.this Corvette shop has it now.

William Aug 25th, 08, 06:59 PM Dan John was going to fax me the paper work from the car; all I got was the cover sheet. Do you have it?
jd502 Aug 27th, 08, 08:22 PM Has anyone heard of any project Zl1's selling lately, or any at all besides the 2 at mecum. If so what was it going for?
1968Motion427SSNova Aug 31st, 08, 11:50 AM William,Yes I have it with original envelope he sent it to me in Post Office stamped Feb 18 2004. Hey just boughta old Hauser Chevrolet wooden yard stick,$10.00! Dan
RobSS1113 Sep 4th, 08, 06:13 PM one of the questions asked to the seller was this .... LOL !!!!!!
