I just picked up a 70 Chevelle for my 14 year old son for him and I to build he wants it to be Pro-Street I've done a few unabody cars but not a full chassis car.

To all the PS guys what are your thoughts [keep in mind 14 years old] but he is a good kid so far. What is out there four the Chevelle and what are his and my best options? Before you say Team Chevelle he has already joined up over there and will be searching and talking it over with some of those guys add gals...

I will post some picks later....Thanks in advance

VERY COOL!! My son is about the same age and could care less about cars.

A full frame car is going to be easier. Chevelles already can hold a lot of tire with minimum work. If it were me I would just notch the frame keep the 4 link the car came with just upgrade the control arms. When I say "notch" the frame I mean build a step into the frame to allow clearance for tires and axle. Should be failry cheap and easy. It's a much better foundation than a uni-body car.

Check out S & W Race Cars inSpring City Pa. They sell a pre-welded frame kit that slips right up into the stock frame, is welded in place, and then the section of the old frame is cut out. Give them a call and they can explain it better.

That is exactly what I was talking about. I didn't explain it very well though.

Dave,

Sounds like a great project.

I have a friend with a 69 chevelle that is a older prostreet car. He cut out his factory rear frame rails and then added a 2 x 3 square channel across the 2 frame rails then added the factory frame rails to it so the frame was narrower. It is easier to do than our camaros.

But like Royce and Lou said there are easier kits now.

Thanks for the input I think the first recomendation was for me to try and use the original equipment. The ladder bar set up will be more of an expence than we have right now with the goodmark parts and need a motor. He has to have a BBC too because the SBC looks lost in a Chevelle so my son says for the excuse to get the BBC I think.

Royce,is there any links on the web you know of that has any description on the best way to do this I think the stock suspension will be the best ride and I want to retain the back seat.

I don't know of any links but I would check the S&W website to see what the kit looks like. that should give you a pretty good idea. Also try doing a search for "tubbed Chevelle" I bet there is plebty of info out there.

When I saw what you wanted to do that is the first idea that popped into my head and that's how I would do it. Clean, simple, functional, and much less esxpensive.

I have to agree with your son on a BBC in a Chevelle and I am a SBC kind of guy. Certain cars just cry out for a BBC like the early Monte Carlos, you can almost fit 2 SBC under the hood.

As you probably already figured out: The Performance forum on Team Chevelle should get all the BB info he will ever need (and then some). I have two back-halfed A-bodies in varying stages of project form:

Dave,
I sent you a PM. Were you able to find the kit to modify your stock frame rails? That would be a LOT less work and probably save you some coin too. Either way you are going to have to cut it for the tire/tubs.

I have used S&W and don't care for then. Their rails are not mandrel bent and have kinks in them.

The Checkered looks better to me.

I have an S&W kit in my car. I was installed about 7 years ago (only on the road for the last 2 years). I 've had no issues with it. I didn't install it myself but the chassis shop that did my car had nothing but good things to say about it and said they would use the clips from S&W on other cars after doing my car. I'm not saying the other kit it's any good, just that I'm pleased with the S&W clip both in quality and price.

Dave, it's great to have a young kid interested in old muscle cars, I really love talking to the kids at cruise-in's(what few come). One thing I learned personally is don't give up on kids if they are not interested. My son played sports in high school and wasn't interested in old cars but to my surprise started coming to shows once he graduated. He now owns a 67 Camaro and works on it when not going to college. He has done primarily all of the body work so far and built his first motor this summer. Your son is lucky to have someone with so much knowledge as you helping him.

Dave, sorry it took so long to reply, went to Grand Run in Pidgeon Forge TN for a couple of days, trust you son's decision making unless it is a safety issue, I haven't agreed with my son's decisions much but somehow it comes out looking OK. I have documented his build with many pics but unsure where to show the progression of car but here is a couple of pics anyway. Keith

Didn't you say this young man was 14? I hope you plan to take about 30 years to finish this car for him. That is a LOT of motor for a young man. I don't know your son but, that would have been nothing but, trouble for me and any other kid I knew growing up. That's a heck of a deal on the engine though I would have bought it too.

We got a set of Hole Shot wheels with tires a buddy of mine took off his car because two weeks after the speed shop told him about the new style sold the same set to a guy he hangs with.He wasn't happy so he sold them to us for $1100.They have 14/32 ET Streets but the front tires are front runners and I think we are going to have to sell them.He also sold us a set of stock 70 seats for $600.

How much chassis work have you done what do you think of this sequence.Drop frame after taking some measurements to tub, have car soda blasted, put on rotissorie do front floor pans and put them in etch primer, put new back halved chassis back in car,cut old quarters for tubs to get a god pattern for the tubs, install tubs, put quarters on,finnsh roll bar and interior sheet metal.I have done a few unibody cars but never a full chassis car....

Hey Dave! How is your project with your son coming along? New pics?

My 3 boys are still young but looks like fun to be building one together.

Soon I hope.He now just asked to stay the night at a friends so tomorrow looks like a bust....I just noticed 100 posts and haven't started on the thing yet.His grandmom gave him an 05 Explorer and money to fix it it was my nephews and he went belly up on the loan she payed it off after it was wrecked and gave it to my son.I am thinking this might end up getting fixed first. He is in Vo-Tech for body and fender so he may be the one working on it.
