View Full Version : 69 RS/SS 396/375h project (L78?)
Michies_'69 Aug 29th, 08, 10:09 PM Hi guys. I'm hoping you can help me out. I've owned a 69 for about 7 years now, driven for 2. My hubby and I were going to do a total restoration on the car. Unfortunately, we got it completely apart, shell on the rotisserie and he passed. Now the car is COMPLETELY apart, did I mention that??? I have almost everything either original or NOS. I have the correctly dated block for the car but I can't find numbers on it! Supposed to be an L78 built in L.A. in Feb of 69., big fuel lines, heater box, redline tach starts at 6k goes to7k, obviously no A/C. We pulled a 69 corvette 427 2bolt out of it. Has this little plate welded on the inside of the rear left wheel well (anyone know what this is for?). I have the correct 840? heads, NOS parts down to the spark plugs. No rust on the car, he replaced a floor panel under the drivers side as it had lil pin holes and the 4 speed hole, yes, it's an original 4spd car. The previous owners didnt like the shifter so they got a hoakie one and cut the hole bigger, idiots! Originally Le Mans blue/black deluxe interior, black vinyl top, black hockey stripes. 12 bolt, muncie 4spd. It's my baby but I don't have the knowhow or the means to restore the car:(. Anyone have any idea what I can get for it as it sits? I'd appreciate ANY info!!! You guys are great, thanks!
travlinz28 Aug 29th, 08, 10:33 PM A good portion of the value will depend on the NOS parts as there could be a significant chunk if NOS sheet metal is involved. Is the car an original 396/375 car and is there any documentation? It sounds like the plate you describe on the rear left frame rail is the dual exhaust mount primarily used on SS and Z/28 cars. Without an exact list of parts, and just going by the information you provided, my guess puts it at about 15K. With some of the parts you descfribe it could be a little higher. Of course it hurts the value to most when it's a basket case.
Michies_'69 Aug 29th, 08, 11:10 PM Thank you so much for the reply. Everything except for the fan shroud is NOS or original. RS fenders, deck lid, hood, doors are original and pretty much perfect. Unfortunately, I don't have documentation. It is an original 396/375 h car. I wish it wasn't built in L.A. then I'd have an X code! I've had lots of people interested in it, I tell them it's definately a project! But well worth it if someone can do it themselves or a good portion of it. The only parts I DON'T have are some of the motor parts like rods and pistons, carb, I don't have an intake (not sure though). I have the crank, cam, heads, pullies, etc. Two consoles, all original dash "meters". We got very maticulous with this car. We were fortunate enough to know somone at the GM dealership who would find all of our NOS parts for us in storage! I even have a NOS gas tank! My project for the project is to make a list of all the parts I have! I do appreciate your time
Unreal Aug 30th, 08, 02:24 AM "big fuel lines" is an indicator that it was not an L78. L78's had "big fuel line" (singular) Of course someone could have added a return line when they changed the motor.
Michies_'69 Aug 30th, 08, 07:58 AM Sorry...big fuel LINE if I remember correctly. Now I have to check!!!
al8apexer Aug 30th, 08, 09:01 AM $15k seems VERY cheap to me
sounds like there is that much worth of NOS parts at least
it may be best to list it on ebay with a comprehensive set of pictures, list of parts, pictures of the parts, etc
starting Sept 2 it costs ZERO to list a car on ebay, you will pay only if it sells
I would list it with a higer minimum and see where it goes
you get the bonus of letting EVERYONE know it is available too
or ...
call Overhauling and have them put it back together for you for their show ... :)
Microgiant Aug 30th, 08, 10:55 AM Tough market right now though. I paid 10k for a NOM X-22 (in my sig) basket case when cars were at top dollar. He was listing it at 15k and it sat there for months till I came along. Mine was missing most of the small parts though. I spent a fortune replaceing.
firstgenaddict Aug 30th, 08, 02:35 PM 15k with the NOS parts... down to spark plugs... hell there is probably more than 15k worth of parts... give me a list and I may buy everything as a package from you and you can be a middle man/broker...
Michies_'69 Aug 30th, 08, 04:33 PM Looks like I have a list to make! I used to have a running list on my computer, 2 computers ago lol. A trip to California is in the works! You guys are great, thank you soooo much! I knew I could count on this place to help. And I do appreciate the fact that you guys don't talk to me like I'm a "stupid woman who does'nt know cars".
phel69 Aug 30th, 08, 04:44 PM Pay a few hundred bucks and have a Camaro appraiser give you an estimate. Make sure that it is someone familiar with Camaros, not just a name in a phone book. Maybe someone on here knows of a good appraiser. Jerry Macneish (sp) is very good on Z28s but he might know L78s or know of someone who does know them.
You could leave alot of money on the table selling a car like that wrong. Post up some pictures.
Michies_'69 Aug 31st, 08, 02:22 AM That's a great idea. Thanks. I know of someone in No. Cal who knows those cars inside and out. Where do I post pics?
firstgenaddict Aug 31st, 08, 05:01 AM You will have to post them in webshots account... then copy the code to put them in a post.
skipdaddie Sep 1st, 08, 04:36 PM Sell the NOS parts separately on Ebay. It is a little work, but will be worth your time. Once the NOS parts are gone, sell the car with whatever you have left over.
