I looked at what appears to be a numbers matching '73 Z28/RS over the weekend. The car is a driver but needs to be restored. Paint is rough, interior is all there but could be refreshed, rust around the rear portion of the wheel wells and there are two small cracks, one on each side of the car that looks like where the quarter panel seams would be about an inch long starting at the window curve and going towards the rear window. The rest of the car appears to be rust free, trunk was great, floors were great and did not see any signs of rust in the rockers. Engine had a fresh rebuild as well as the M21 4 speed. The trim plate, vin and engine codes all seem correct as well. What is a car like this worth in this condition, I do not want to end up paying to much, but am more familiar with first gen pricing, not second.

IMO not the 12.5k they are asking. This one looks be a nicer car for a bit less:

Thanks for the input, I am still on the fence, it does seem high, but it is a real Z car and a 4 speed at that. I will think on it for a few more days, maybe he will come down in price.

No way that car is worth more than $6-9K and that depends on if it has the original motor or not and how bad the rust really is.

The cars engine is original, it has been gone thorugh and rebuilt though, not the stock carb either. Rust appears to be limited to the lower rear quarter panels. Body wise there are a few dents and dings but nothing major (with the exception of the weird cracks). 6-9 seems like the going rate then?

Maybe be I am not into theses enough but IMO a 73 numbers match Z28 is not saying much. ( I have owned a 72, a 73 RSZ28, a 79, and an 80-Z28)The 73s were not real powerhouses. Being an RS definitely helps but IMO $7k would me a more marketable price. If you are looking for a hotrod I''d just get any other RS for less money and build it the way you want. I wouldn't go over $7k because the paint looks pretty rough in the pics. To me that means its even rougher in person. I would buzz down there and look at in person but I wouldn't rush it, at the asking price it is gonna be for sale for awhile. There are a fair amount of the 70-73s for sale albeit most are not Z28s. There was a nicer looking one with decent paint for sale around the same area but it had BB. The asking price wasn't much higher than the black one.
Now here is part of the reason I wouldn't buy it @12k. I have a 69 RS with a solid body if I sold it for 12k and the person buying it bought a nice running 350 for $2000, 4 speed setup $1500(less if you went auto), paint (no rust work needed) lets say 5k. Oh interior pieces needed $1k. Minus labor you'd be looking @21,500 and probably be able to get close to that if you had to sell it.
Now the black car needs just about all the same stuff plus possible quarter panels (if there is rust you can see typically there is more you won't see) The drive train may be done but in looking at the pics that car looks like it was not taken real good care of. That is why I think the asking price is too high
So what are you wanting a stock numbers matching Z or a hotrod? I think you'd be money ahead on this one:

2nd gens dont get much love, but the best years are the 70-73 models.

if all else fails .. go to www.nastyz28.com and post the pictures up.

but Im guessing 8K from the pictures. the Values of the early 2nd gens are slowly .. inch by inch rising. Seems the first gens are kinda pricey so people been buying the next closest thing.

Besides any muscle car with chrome bumper is a good thing. Just not the Horrible bumpers they put on them in the mid 70 cars.

Your best bet is to go to www.nada.com That is the website State Farm and other major insurance companies will use to determine the value of the car. They also will not lend more than the figures on nada depending on the condition.

Just enter your zip code, the options etc. A mint car with the original drive train will bring the highest dollar figure.
