: Project Sinister 69 Camaro
96z28ss Sep 4th, 08, 11:40 PM I hang out over at Pro-touring.com and Lateral-g.net I thought I'd introduce my project to the guys here.
I loosely hung all the sheet metal on the car and, put it on a trailer to have the guys at Bruning Auto Design get all the door gaps perfect, and the panels aligned correctly. I wanted the doors to look like a modern european car with the nice tight gaps.
The Guys at B.A.D. are top notch. Tim is a top notch fabricator that worked on both the Realmad and Newmad at Steve's Auto Restoration. I think in just a few short years B.A.D. will be one of the Northwest's top shop to have your car worked on. Here is there current project http://www.lateral-g.net/forums/showthread.php4?t=11358 (http://www.lateral-g.net/forums/showthread.php4?t=11358)
Here are some pics they sent me on the progress of the car. There are some cool mods that will be done to the car, I just got to make sure I don't go way over budget. Some of the real cool stuff might not happen till later this year or next. As I get new pics I'll keep this updated.

96z28ss Sep 4th, 08, 11:43 PM okay latest update is the front bumper.
I have looked at lots of 69 camaro's with metal bumpers and endura bumpers.
Some look nice and tight and some look like they are pulled away from the body too much.
I just like the look of a tucked in bumper. Tim has been busy tucking the front bumper. Also I don't plan on running a front plate so I had him get rid of the license plate fangs on the bumper. The rear is next.

JV69z/28rs Sep 5th, 08, 05:00 AM Very nice project! Lots of "big name" parts on this car :). The body work is excellent. The modifications are well thought out and enhance the overall look of the car which is not that easy on a '69 Camaro. Keep the pictues coming. Thanks!
DougP Sep 5th, 08, 05:38 AM Nice job on the fender fitment and the custom front bumper
z2fast8 Sep 5th, 08, 09:31 AM smooth front end thats really nice and looks almost exactly as to what i'm doing to mine. love the procharged lsX.
I hadn't noticed your ride at PT.com but seeing it here I gotta say I think it's looking F A N T A S T I C. I agree with ya about Bruning also,......your car is in good hands there.
Excellent gaps and great looking bumper work man,......I really like it. I've been telling my shop that I want that also,....but we're not at that stage yet. Your pics will help me get the point across.
Keep us updated!
96z28ss Sep 9th, 08, 12:10 PM Rear Bumper updates.
Rear tail panel was cut and a channel was made for the bumper be recessed in.
The car is really starting to take shape. It really does change the whole look of the car.
Things will get trimmed and smoothed out and it will flow better.

AutoRodTechnologies Sep 9th, 08, 06:36 PM Love the car, and love the nice body lines.
96z28ss Sep 10th, 08, 11:31 AM Most of the trimming is done on the tail panel.
Also I didn't like the way most of the camaros looked with tucked bumpers the ends have way too much of an arc and look like an old truck bumper. So Tim and his awesome abilities at metal fabrication, hammered and reshaped the ends of the bumper. Giving the front and rear more of a matching appearance.
Just look at the difference between the end of the new reshaped one vs the stock end.

96z28ss Sep 15th, 08, 06:40 PM more shots of the rear bumper and shows how the ends were reshaped to give the bumper more of a similar look to the front. The stock rear bumper just looked to much of a bubble.

http://www.automotivedesigneng.com/gallery/camaro/8-18_updates_010.JPG
I like how they use the quarter panel as a sketch pad.
http://www.automotivedesigneng.com/gallery/camaro/8-26_stance_003.JPG
This shot also shows where the license plate recess on the bumper was shortened to match the opening in the rear valance.
From the factory the bumper opening is wider than the valance.

z2fast8 Sep 15th, 08, 06:55 PM gotta be honest i dont like the rear bumper tight like that the contour of the bumper just does'nt work with the flat tail panel. love the wheels by the way.
cdunson Sep 15th, 08, 08:50 PM gotta be honest i dont like the rear bumper tight like that the contour of the bumper just does'nt work with the flat tail panel. love the wheels by the way.
I like the rear view but the side view throws me off a bit. But it beats what GM did.. the round ends of the bumper there just don't with the wit the sharper lines of the body in that area IMO.
Hatya Sep 17th, 08, 12:10 PM this is gonna be a sweet one. I like the rear bumper
okiemark Sep 25th, 08, 07:08 AM the rear bumper done that way may produce a "leaning forward" stance when it's done. especially with no rear spoiler, spoiler on front, cowl hood and a "bigger" (delux?) bumper of some kind on front... just enough to add extra inches on front.
okiemark Sep 25th, 08, 07:10 AM Robert: I see you're going with Wilwood brakes (nice).. where's the booster?

cowboybob Sep 26th, 08, 07:09 AM Love the mods that have been done to the car...looks great!
One question though: How did B.A.D. mount the front bumper to the frame when they covered the holes in the valence for the bumper brackets?
hogshooter Sep 28th, 08, 07:20 PM I think if the rear bumper is chrome it will look great, the contrast of color will set it off not the way it sticks out. I am also interested in the way the front bumper mounts. Do you just bolt it on from the backside? It is really just an appearance piece anyway, not going to help much in a collision.
96z28ss Sep 29th, 08, 09:17 AM It bolts in from the back.
I don't have pictures of the way it mounts.
You can look here at how someone did it similar and they took out the bracket pocket also.

bubba57-chevy Sep 29th, 08, 06:10 PM Great looking car. I noticed you are running a Hydroboost. What is the setup and where did you get the mounting bracket for the hydroboost unit. Thanks.
Motown 454 Sep 29th, 08, 08:31 PM Robert he's right those bumpers don't look right . Because I like you, send them to me and I will send you two regular ones. Only ! because I like you.

96z28ss Dec 4th, 09, 11:40 AM its been a while since i did an update. I slowed way down on the car do to the break in at the house and getting a paycut at work.
But here are some new pics i got off the camera last night.
Here is the stamp die I made to recess the fuel door. I machined it and pressed the pins in to keep everything aligned as it gets pressed.

Close up shot of the filler door all in place now. The Ricks Stainless tank was also modified to get the filler to the new location and everything lines up great. Tim did a great job on this. The plate will be in a fixed position now and not drop down.

http://www.automotivedesigneng.com/gallery/camaro/P1030201.JPG
Here are the final shots of what the rear bumper looks like.
I can't speak enough about how good Tim is at metal shaping. I mean the metal on the bumper is thick and he formed and reshaped the ends, and makes it look like its so easy. The rear of the car is still going to get a new spoiler and the exhaust cut outs. Then the back half of the car will be done.

Pro-Street69Camaro468 Feb 10th, 10, 06:39 AM Very Nice cant wait to see more....
96z28ss Jul 23rd, 10, 04:46 PM Been a while since any updates.
The Exhaust is done. Here are a couple pics from my iphone. Tim cut the rear valance for exhaust to exit. It has exhaust tips that have a resonator built in, gives it a factory tip look. Also he gave the opening a rolled edge that is real nice, its not a rolled edge all the way around, it fades into the valance at the bottom.
I'll put picture of the entire exhaust system up when i get better pictures. Its a work of art. Its all 3 inchTim is working on the roll cage now.
http://www.automotivedesigneng.com/gallery/camaro/tail_pipe.JPG
The license plate is something I found cleaning out someones basement, I got to keep the plates. All I got to do is go 8.99 right? LOL
http://www.automotivedesigneng.com/gallery/camaro/8secryd.JPG
I got this plate also in the basement he must of got a hi 8 second.

SixD7 Jul 26th, 10, 04:49 PM Cool as hell!
96z28ss Oct 12th, 10, 11:19 AM Well I got the Roll Bar put in place its all welded in.
Im going to put some bars that go to the front but I'll put those in a bit later.

http://www.automotivedesigneng.com/gallery/camaro/DSC05240.JPG
Also started working on the firewall smoothing.
You can see a hint of the rear firewall behind the rear seat taking shape also.
Also made a dimple die plate for the subframe bolt access hole.
Few more things and it will be done and on to other things.
http://www.automotivedesigneng.com/gallery/camaro/DSC05241.JPG
Running a factory tilt steering column but We covered it up with a nice tube that it slips into.

69 Bowtie Oct 12th, 10, 09:17 PM I love you vision on this car, Can't wait to see the finished product!
engel286 Oct 13th, 10, 11:54 AM It's looking awesome. You don't see this much attention to detail very often. Where did you get the filler door? Who makes it?
68RS-SS Oct 13th, 10, 02:46 PM Exhaust dumpouts are very nicely done - looks like shoud have been done that way from the beginning. Bumpers shadow the body very nicely. Goes w/o saying but still neds to be said: Nice job!
Microgiant Oct 13th, 10, 04:56 PM Looking VERY tastefull so far. Thank you for not fitting round tailights in the rear. I saw people on Lateral G discussing this in another thread l:).
96z28ss Oct 14th, 10, 01:30 PM Fuel filler door is a Goodridge part.
Round tail lights were never an option. That was someone elses crazy idea
96z28ss Nov 22nd, 10, 04:14 PM Well got a couple more things done.
I wanted a panel behind the rear seat so I came up with a few ideas and myself and Tim picked one.
BEFORE
http://www.automotivedesigneng.com/gallery/camaro/DSC05240.JPG
AFTER
http://www.automotivedesigneng.com/gallery/camaro/DSC05445.JPG
Also put the door panel on and test fit it with the seats to see what we might do for side bars.
http://www.automotivedesigneng.com/gallery/camaro/DSC05447.JPG
http://www.automotivedesigneng.com/gallery/camaro/DSC05448.JPG
96z28ss Nov 24th, 10, 12:14 PM Started work on the front inner fenders also. I wanted it to match the frame better and make them a bit wider for more tire clearance.
There is no need for the control arm hole to be so big so it was brought out to the edge of the control arm mount about 3/8" clearance all the way around. Also the back side was lengthened so it covers the sub frame more, keeping some tire debris off the subframe and firewall.
Tim is real good at working metal. Shrinking, stretching, and using a big hammer he made the crown in the metal and gave the front inner fenders more tire clearance.
There will be a bit more detail in them but that will be on the next update.
http://www.automotivedesigneng.com/gallery/camaro/DSC05453.JPG
http://www.automotivedesigneng.com/gallery/camaro/DSC05452.JPG
Here is the driver side almost done.
http://www.automotivedesigneng.com/gallery/camaro/DSC05451.JPG
96z28ss Oct 12th, 11, 02:05 PM Well both inners are done now.
http://www.automotivedesigneng.com/gallery/camaro/DSC05625.JPG
Here are some pics of the exhaust and tranny cross member, since I had a chance to get it on a lift.
designed the crossmember in CAD first.http://www.automotivedesigneng.com/gallery/camaro/tranny_x-member.jpg
http://www.automotivedesigneng.com/gallery/camaro/DSC05630.JPG
http://www.automotivedesigneng.com/gallery/camaro/DSC05631.JPG
I had Stainless Works make me some mufflers that I designed. It allows the exhaust the use of the cut out or when closed, it flows thru the rest of the muffler and then out the back valance.
My neighbors are going to hate me.
http://www.automotivedesigneng.com/gallery/camaro/DSC05632.JPG

http://www.automotivedesigneng.com/gallery/camaro/DSC05636.JPG
Tailpipes go thru the valance, with a nice bead around the opening.
http://www.automotivedesigneng.com/gallery/camaro/8secHI1.jpg
96z28ss Oct 12th, 11, 02:08 PM Here is a small update on the engine compartment.
Here is a fan shroud that I had laser cut, and then Tim bent the ends up and welded to the radiator. They are Spal fans and should pull alot of hot air.
http://www.automotivedesigneng.com/gallery/camaro/fans.jpg
I had Tim straighten the radiator support. By straightening it we gained over an inch for the intake on the supercharger.
Also made mounts for the intercooler.
http://www.automotivedesigneng.com/gallery/camaro/DSC05980.jpg
Since the radiator support was made straight the hood latch is going to get modified. I also made a new front end support and had it laser cut.
http://www.automotivedesigneng.com/gallery/camaro/DSC05975.jpg
All the intercooler plumbing is now done and it looks real good. Tim is real good at laying stuff out, making sure stuff is symmetrical.
http://www.automotivedesigneng.com/gallery/camaro/DSC05973.jpg
This is why I have two different size fans. The intake on the supercharger needs to go somewhere.
http://www.automotivedesigneng.com/gallery/camaro/DSC05978.jpg
as usual more updates later...
96z28ss Oct 21st, 11, 08:11 AM Here is a small update.
Got the intake for the supercharger and Air filter location finished. Made close out panels for both sides. Air filter will be on the other side of the close out panel.
Made some stainless hard lines for the coolant. It has to go around too many things to do it with a regular hose.
http://www.automotivedesigneng.com/gallery/camaro/DSC06082.jpg
http://www.automotivedesigneng.com/gallery/camaro/DSC06083.jpg
96z28ss Jan 4th, 12, 12:28 PM another small update.
The core support close out panel is done. My inner fenders were done but I had been playing around with the idea of putting some style into them. I decided it needed to be done. It makes everything tie together. Core support and inner fenders match now as well as the side panels.

67Rally Jan 4th, 12, 05:44 PM Looks great. I really like the dumps on the mufflers rather than dumping them up front. The cutouts in the valance are a real cool touch. Nice work so far.
