I decided to go with one of the two cams in my 383 Compression is calculated @ 9.989:1 presuming zero deck ht. However, 236* at .050-(288HR) is that enough for pump gas and iron heads? I need to make a decision on which of the two cams and springs. Comp recommends the 986 which are listed at .500" lift max, or upgraded 987 which are real close to my current springs. Will a slightly stronger spring help prevent float? Is valve float with HR a concern? Generally what is needed to install a rev-kit? Any input would be appreciated. SS

Valve float will kill hydraulic lifters quick -- it's bad news. A rev kit should help, have never used one personally, but supposedly they are a PITA to install.
I'd stay with the smaller cam with your compression ratio. I think the 294 would be way too big.
A slightly stronger spring should help prevent valve float but be careful you can use too much spring with hydraulic lifters. Too much pressure is hard on the lifters and I've heard that you can actually collapse them (Trick Flow tech line).

I was leaning towards the 288HR, would the x grind @ 236* be 92 octane friendly? I heard Comp might be redesigning their HYD roller lifters is there a superior one? I think the power-band is 2500-6K, I would hope it would rev 6k. I could also run 6200 chip in the MSD for a rev limiter. SS

I run the 288HR in my AFR headed 350 and it runs fine on pump gas.I like that cam alot. It makes power to 6200 in my 350. I shift at 6400. Have not had any valve float problems and I dont run a rev kit.

I run the XR294 in my 406. It's 9.99:1 with aluminum heads and I run 93 octane with 38* total advance with no problems.
People tell me they have had problems with valve float on a hydraulic roller but I have been up to 6800 with no hint of float. I run the 987 spring.
Comp has had a lot of problems with their hydraulic roller lifters. It took me 2 tries to get a set that worked then it took my buddy 3 sets to get a good one. They say they have worked out the problems but I wouldn't blame you if you went with another manufacturer.
I love the cam by the way! graemlins/thumbsup.gif graemlins/beers.gif
