While cleaning up and painting the upper shock mount brackets (for the rear shocks), I noticed there was a rubbery gasket like thing around the neck that goes up into the frame/trunk. (see link for a pic of the mount bracket).

This was falling apart, so I cleaned it all out thinking a new o-ring or gasket came with the new shocks. Of course, it don't. The repro shock mount brackets don't come with the gasket either from looking at the pics on the retailers websites. I'm not talking about the rubber shock donuts that go on the shock shaft on either side of the mount bracket.

Are these things available? Are they even needed? Maybe go to a hardware store and see if they have a generic o-ring that will fit? Almost looks like a guy could run a bead of silicone around the groove.

Old post, but running in to the same problem, any ideas?

I think the purpose of that seal is to make that area watertight. There is no part number for that seal in the assemble manual. The giant O-ring sounds like a good idea. There is also sealing washers around the bolts.
