View Full Version : Rare 68 ash tray?
68 Ragtop Sep 7th, 08, 06:15 PM I have had a few 68's, some with walnut ashtrays and some with smooth black finish, but have never seen a pebble textured contured front black ash tray in a 68 Camaro.
Is this a 68 Camaro part or possibly from a Firebird?

cpodeep Sep 7th, 08, 06:28 PM James,
Looks like a 67 and 68 standard Camaro interior ash tray to me
captcanuck68 Sep 7th, 08, 06:29 PM Ditto.

clwilcox33 Sep 7th, 08, 06:38 PM I've never seen one that was smooth black. All the standards had the same finish as the dash trim plate. Pebble finish or woodgrain.
Mark Rossiter Sep 7th, 08, 06:46 PM The ashtray in my May built 67 coupe has the black pebble finish, but it doesn't have the 'pouty' lip at the top like the one you you have pictured.
68 Ragtop Sep 7th, 08, 09:29 PM I've never seen one that was smooth black. All the standards had the same finish as the dash trim plate. Pebble finish or woodgrain.
I guess I have always had the walnut trim on my Camaros, never the pebble trim.
Here is the early black smooth ashtray that came with walnut trim.

And the later walnut ashtray.

bertfam Sep 7th, 08, 10:10 PM There were actually three ashtrays used in 68.
Group 12.009 - Tray Assy, Ash Receiver
1968 Camaro with Standard Interior and without Z23 or D55 - 3919123 (Black, pebble grained) Used throughout production on standard interior cars with the pebble grained center dash panel.
1968 Camaro with Standard Interior and Z23 or D55, or Z87 Deluxe Interior - 3927460 (Black, Smooth) Used with the wood grained center dash panel until late February/early March 1968.
1968 Camaro with Standard Interior and Z23 or D55, or Z87 Deluxe Interior - 3921861 (Woodgrain) Used with the wood grained center dash panel after late February/early March 1968.
The actual dates are still being researched.

68 Ragtop Sep 7th, 08, 11:19 PM Ed, I knew there where 3 different ashtrays in 68, but the only pebble grain I have seen was a flat front, not contured. Must have been from a 67.
I know the walnut contured brings the most money, but I think the pebble grain contured may actually be more rare.
Garfields Maro Sep 8th, 08, 12:19 AM FWIW, mine is an early (11A) Z87, wood grained center but has the smooth black ashtray. Maybe not original?? Oh well, guess it don't matter much....certainly wont be buying a $500 wood grained one anytime soon:wacko:
69mustang Sep 8th, 08, 08:32 AM My early 68 with deluxe interior has the black smoth surfaced ash tray with wood grain centre dash panel. Well documented original 68 car however the ash tray may have been replaced Who knows!
bertfam Sep 8th, 08, 09:39 AM I'm sorry guys. I read my notes wrong!
The black pebble grained ashtray was used throughout production if you didn't have Z87, Z23 or D55.
The black smooth ashtray was used for all Z87, Z23 or D55 cars until late February/early March, 1968.
The woodgrained ashtray was used for all Z87, Z23 or D55 cars after late February/early March, 1968.
Here's what we have at the CRG:
For the Los Angeles plant, cars from 02C have the woodgrain ashtray, and most cars up to and including 01B have black. However, there are holes in the Los Angeles data between 01C and 02C, so there is still a 4 to 5 week period for which we can't be sure of the extent of overlap.
For the Norwood plant, cars from 03C have the woodgrain ashtray, although woodgrain does start occurring sporadically in 01C. However, as there are a number of cases where people have Obviously swapped in the wrong ashtray, which of these during this time period is real and which is not is uncertain.
Note that there is a bit of factory difference in that Los Angeles had a shorter overlap period of no more than 5 weeks, vs. 8 to 9 weeks at Norwood.

Please remember that this is still preliminary data and should not be taken as a final determination. This is an ongoing CRG research report and we welcome additional input. Especially in the gray areas mentioned above. If you are positive your ashtray is original, please contact us.
Sorry for the confusion gents. I'll fix my original reply above.

How does the console option (D55) affect the ashtray in the dash?
If you order D55 without Z23 or Z87, do you still get the pebble grain dash but with a smooth black (early) or woodgrain (late) ashtray, or is the walnut dash trim and the corresponding ashtray part of the console package?
okiemark Sep 8th, 08, 02:36 PM I live in political correct, namby-pamby sissy Southern calif... I think they're actually trying to get ashtrays in old cars outlawd!
bertfam Sep 8th, 08, 03:04 PM How does the console option (D55) affect the ashtray in the dash?
is the walnut dash trim and the corresponding ashtray part of the console package?
Yes, the walnut trim on the D55 console automatically gave you the walnut center dash trim. So did the Z23 "Special Interior" and the Z87 "Custom Interior" options. Therefore, if you got the walnut dash trim, you got the smooth black ashtray (early) or the walnut ashtray (late).

sleepsinshed Sep 8th, 08, 03:37 PM I guess my car has the Z23 option then, because I don't think it originally came with a console, and it has the standard interior. Thanks for the info Ed! Another secret revealed!
68 Ragtop Sep 8th, 08, 04:52 PM If you have the Z23 option, you will also have a stainless steel trim molding on the dash pad.
bertfam Sep 8th, 08, 05:23 PM If you have the Z23 option, you will also have a stainless steel trim molding on the dash pad.
You also got the N30 Deluxe steering wheel and the bright pedal trim.

Garfields Maro Sep 8th, 08, 11:22 PM Looks like a decent deal there Armando. I dont recall seeing one like it.....thought the pebble grained trays were always flat.
Thanks for your insight Ed, guess I'll use the money for a set of tires instead of the walnut ash tray:D
NHBandit Sep 9th, 08, 05:12 AM Thanks for your insight Ed, guess I'll use the money for a set of tires instead of the walnut ash tray:D My 67 project came with a 68 walnut ashtray & dash trim panel. Maybe I can trade it with someone for some tires & the correct 67 parts... ;)
tejasrs/ss Sep 9th, 08, 04:27 PM Thanks for the info although I'm still a little confused if it's the right ash tray or not
bertfam Sep 9th, 08, 07:15 PM Armando, the one you got off of ebay is a 68 standard pebble grained ashtray, used without D55 (Console), Z23 (Interior Style Trim Group) or Z87 (Custom Deluxe Interior) options. Your car is a 67 so that's the incorrect ashtray, although I belive it will fit anyway.
Ed
clwilcox33 Sep 10th, 08, 08:51 AM Apologies for my incorrect statement above. I had never seen/heard of a smooth black ashtray. Learn something new everyday ;)

If your car DOES have any of the above options, then that's the wrong ashtray, and you would need the black smooth ashtray (early cars) or the woodgrained ashtray (late cars). Does you car have the black pebble grained center dash or the woodgrained center dash?
Ed
Ed,
My car actually doesn't have a center dash in it! (yet) ;) I did buy one for it (black pebble grain). Here's the de-code of my tag.

bertfam Sep 10th, 08, 01:48 PM Armando, I re-read your original post and noted that you don't have a 68. You have a 67, so that ashtray is incorrect for your car.
You need one that looks like THIS (http://www.rickscamaros.com/product.asp?pf%5Fid=CDP%2D17&dept%5Fid=3360).
67's didn't have the "lip" that the 68's had.
I also edited my thread above.

Thanks for the info! I'll wait to see what it looks like in my car before I decide to get the "correct" one. :beers:
bertfam Sep 11th, 08, 08:49 PM Armando, there's one in the CLASSIFIEDS SECTION (http://www.camaros.net/classifieds/showproduct.php?product=29319&cat=8) section right now! Good price too.
