View Full Version : What is a 68 12 Bolt Worth

I have a 68 12 bolt that came out of a car with 03C build date. It was coded as a 2:72 non posi. I have had it completely rebuilt with brand new Eaton series 3 posi and US gear 3:73 all new bearings and complete new drum brakes. This rear end has never been reinstalled back in the car. I need to get an idea as to what it is worth as it will not fit under my newly aquired 67. The 67 has a 12 bolt and I don't want to change the spring perches on the 68.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I would guess about a 1000.00, if it had the correct codes then the price would be a lot more...

There are a bunch for sale in the 1800 range. Price it at 1500 and it should sell.

The only confusing thing is you say it won't "fit" under the 67. Does it just have multileaf perches, and you want monos like a 67 should have, or are the perches spaced wrong or the rear is too big or small in some other dimension?

If it is a Camaro or Nova rear, it should fit, and the prices above are in line with what I have seen. If it is a Chevelle rear or something else, prices are a lot lower.

Eric,
Here is what is going on. I have a 68 Camaro project car ( I think it was an original BB car) that has the original 12 bolt with multi leaf springs. The rear end was pulled and and all of the above work was done, including new multi leaf springs and CE traction bars. I picked up a 67 3L 4P car (Project) over the weekend. The 67 has a non posi 12 bolt (mono leaf) with it (not installed). There is a 10 bolt non posi installed in the car now. I plan to swap my 396 4 speed (complete subframe) that I built and put it into the 67, put the 350, with the automatic and 10 bolt (with the 67 subframe) from the 67 into the 68 and then sell the 68.
I know that the 68 body will not be worth a bunch of money, but I don't want to lose money on the parts of the 68 that are worth money.
I figure that I will sell the 68 12 bolt and take the money and have the 67 (mono leaf, traction bar bracket) rebuilt with a posi and new gears.

None of this is numbers matching except for the 68 12 bolt is correctly dated for the 68 build date.

I hope this clears up any questions in regards to what I'm trying to do.

Thanks....

If you're not re-doing the 68, I would think keeping the rear in that car and selling the whole thing is the best way to make the most money. With the 12-bolt, the 68 is a probable SS and is worth more than another 68 roller with a 10-bolt under it. Depends on how bad the 68 is, but leaving the 12-bolt in it could double the amount the car will bring as a project.

As always, JMO, but separating the 68 from it's 12-bolt isn't worth the $600 to $1000 you need to rebuild the 67's 12-bolt.

Eric,
The 68 needs a lot of work, I have installed complete 1 piece floor pan, complete trunk pan and outer rockers on both sides. It needs to have full quarters installed, outer wheels, roof panel, will need interior kit, and all glass. It has a complete Goodmark RS front sheetmetal, with the original SS hood. I have all the sheetmetal to put it back together, but I really like a 67 and so I got the 67.
The cars trim tag codes out as Lemans blue, black vinyl top and black deluxe interior.

Scott -

If more people don't see this and weigh in, you might want to start a "what's it worth" for the 68. Even with the market the way it is, I think the 68 "probably an SS" as you describe is probably more than $6K or $7K with the small block drivetrain. Without the probably original 12-bolt, my guess is under $5K. If the original 68 sub has original power discs and GM BB engine frame stands, you might get some more. I haven't seen an outcome on that 68 BB project car KZ had up for sale, so I don't know what he was offered for it, but it was pretty rough. Yours already has a lot of the hardest work already done.

I know what you mean about wanting a 67. My first was a 67 coupe with LT-1 power, and someday I will have another (if I ever get this 69 done...).

Eric,
The 68 has single piston disc brakes. I was thinking of doing the swaps as describe about and seeing if I could get around 4k.
The 67 has original 4 piston calipers and I was going to swap them to the 68 subframe. I have had the 68 subframe out, blasted, painted, all new bushings and suspension parts. When I got the 68 it had the original BB engine mounts so it was the way to go.

Scott, I think you're inline with the prices and the 12bolt "should" go for 12-1600 and could go for more to the right buyer.

BTW, glad to see you got the 67.... didn't look like a bad deal at all. :D

Doug,
Thanks....I will do a write-up on the 67 when I get the photos lined up.

You need to stop by :beers::beers: and have a look around, you might find something for your 68.

Doug,
What did they say about paroling your car?
Did a write up on the 67 in the bench racing section.
