View Full Version : Carb Problems
mowrey1999 Nov 24th, 02, 10:53 AM Have a 67 camaro with a new 383 small block , when placed on the engine dyno we made 414 peak hp at 6100 rpm and 440 ft.lb torque at the same RPM,s which was about peak also . with #75 jets and 6.5 power valve and 38* total timing, the next dyno pull we used #78 jets we made more power,no other changes were made and the horsepower went to 433hp at 6100 and torque went to 460 ft lbs , we didnt have any co,2 metor on the engine but it is so rich it makes you cry when its running ,the carb is a barry grant silver claw with the float level set about the middle of the sight plug when running and 7 #,s pressure, the motor has about 9lbs vacumn at 900 rpm,s , Just trying to find out about setting up the carb right since it seems to be making more power with bigger jets but is really rich , where do I go from here or what do you guys suggest to do from here to get the richness out, thanks,

oger Nov 24th, 02, 03:18 PM The jetting is fine you need to clean up the idle. Make sure the throttle blades aren't open too far so it's into the main circuit( this is a very common problem with a big cam).
James67RS Nov 24th, 02, 03:27 PM I have to agree (in principle) with oger...your "overly rich condition" is not related to the jetting, but to your tuning of the idle circuit. I will admit up front that I am not familiar with the Silver Claw carbs (with respect to tunability) but things to consider....
1. Is the power valve still in one piece or could it be blown and seeping?
2. Do the throttle blades have holes in them for additional air flow or do you have to open them up to get the engine to idle?
3. If it 2 or 4 corner idle and (to be blunt) how good are you at setting the idle mixture?
4. Have you played with the secondary throttle blades at all?
It's tough to comment on carburetors without knowing specifics, but oyu should be able to tune the idle richness out with time and patience. Best of luck.

mowrey1999 Nov 24th, 02, 03:28 PM Thanks for the help,I will see what I can do
mowrey1999 Nov 24th, 02, 03:33 PM The power valve is new, I replaced the old one in case it was not working properly even though it was new, the carb has 4 corner idle mixture, the throttle blades havent been messed with since it is brand new as well as the motor and we wanted to get a base line and go from there, I used a vacumn guage to set for highest vacumn and also engine rpms, Havent messed with the secondary blades yet since this was a base line session and wanted to do more research before trying again , thanks for all the help

jcdubs Nov 25th, 02, 04:53 AM get the car running at the idle you like, 900 1000 what ever, then take the carb off and see if the throttle blades in the primaries are past the transision slots in the base plate. If they are you will most likely have to drill the throttle blades to get more air in the engine at idle so the throttle blades are below the transision slots at idle.I must of had my carb on and off the car 20 times before i got it to work perfectly, and it made a huge difference at idle and acceleration and response. My throttle blade were way past the transision slots just to get the car to a normal idle, but like you it was rich enough to make your eyes tear, also the air idle screws made no difference at all. What i did is took the carb off, adjusted the idle all the way down, drilled one small hole in each throttle blade in the primary blades, I think I started at about 1/32, I kept going a little bigger with the hole size each time till the car would idle with the throttle blades almost closed, every time i went bigger with the holes i put the carb back on and fired it up to see where i was, takes alot of time but it was well worth it. keep in bind that my carb is a holley 750 dbl pump and does not have 4 corner idle, with that set up you might have to work with all four blades not sure.
