: Removing clear coat from intake manifold

I have an aluminum edelbrock intake that was painted with clear (smooth move ex-lax) that later turned GOLD! Now I am needing to remove the ugly mess it has left me with. I have been using B12chemtool, a drill with wire brushes, steel wool and sand paper. They all have worked pretty well but there is so much baked on there and in the tiny twists and turns that it's almost impossible to get to some. My Question is, what solvent can I use that will eat up this coating and leave bare aluminum? The chemtool chem dip or something along those lines, lacquer, regular old gas?
Any suggestions, anything that actually brakes up the paint, the B12 really does not do anything.

Where can I get this done, how much dough does it cost, and can it be done in 4 days?
I'm limited on time and really don't want to throw too much money at this, the only reason I'm going to use the old intake is because I think it will solve one of my cars problems.

Should read glass bead it. Perhaps your local machine shop. Or maybe you know someone else that has a bead blast cabinet. I have one but it is full of sand, leaves a different finish than glass beads.

Most body shops for old cars or a carburetor rebuild shop will have a blast cabinet to do the job. I would think $40 bucks or so?

I glass beaded and clearcoated one also. Yup, it turned gold-ish!:clonk:

I think I may just paint it with an aluminum color paint.

$40! You gotta be kidding me! $20 max. $40 is ridiculous. Maybe my scale is off but that seems really high.

There is a guy that will do it here for $85 an hour. The most it would take is 10 minutes.

I'm not sure about where you're at, although most places around here have a minimum. 1/2 hour minimum charge isn't uncommon in this day and age.

Many say that blasting an aluminum intake will lead to increased staining. Of all the ones Ive done, I have found the opposite. They have always been very easy clean up when needed.

I blast at low psi, and haven't had to remove clear coat, so I can't say for sure. I would think that blasting off clear coat at low psi would take some time, but less than an hour.

I have heard others recommend this, but I haven't tried it personally.

I paid $20 for mine and the guy was sorry he didn't charge me more! It was grubby:D.
I don't think you can buy the blast media for $20 around here.

I have used Wurth's Paint Stripper. It's in a spray can. I used it on my old rear end when I was trying to find the code stampings. The paint actually bubbled up and fell to the floor. I cleaned up with water.

I have not used this on aluminum. I would do a test spot to see if it is safe. I would want it to eat a hole through your manifold.

Glass beading it will do the trick better than any chemical and should be fairly inexpensive or free if you know the right people.

I ended up using a friends bead blast cabinet at his shop, cost me $0
Looks excellent better than when I got it new, I actually like they way it kind of made it white, should make the brighter colors in the engine bay stand out more.
