Converting Plunger Washer Pump to an Electric Pump

I believe this will work for Camaros and other GM Models from 1964 to 1972
This will allow you to use the original Wiper Switch as designed and by pass the Relay that engages the Plunger Pump. This should work for both STD and Hide- Away wiper systems.

Back of Wiper Switch Looks like this:

Top Row

__ _ These 2 are grounds - the Center one “__” is not used (Ground the “_” to Head Light Sx Ground Bracket)

Bottom Row
_ _ _ (Black Hi-Speed) (Medium Blue Slow-Speed) (Dark Blue Washer Pump)

To use an Electric Washer Pump Motor Run a Jumper from Horn Relay Accessory Bar to “+” terminal of Washer Motor - good idea to use a 5 amp fuse here. Pull the Black and Medium Blue wires from 3 Prong Terminal and reconnect to proper terminals on Wiper Switch – Just let the 3 Prong Connector hang loose under dash with the Dark Blue Wire for future use when using the original Plunger Washer Pump. Run jumper wire from the “-“terminal of the Pump Motor to the Dark Blue terminal on the Wiper Switch and that’s it. I removed the worn rubber valves from the Plunger Pump and ran the Fluid Tube into the inlet of the Plunger pump. – This way the Wiper Mechanism looks original. An early Volvo 240 Wash Bottle and Pump is ideal for this conversion as it looks similar to the original Camaro container.

Here’s some PIC’s:

After years of playing around I think it’s time I wrapped my additional wiring into one harness - lol

Looks very nice under the hood. Is that a 454 in there?

Robert: Yep a 454 +.030 has Eagle Forged Rotating Assembly 10:1 TRW Forged Pistons. 781 Heads with Manley 2.21/1.9 Valves, Donovan Cam Gear Drive, Comp Cams CB288R Mechanical Roller, Crower Sever Duty Hippo Lifters, Jomar Girdle, 830 Holley Annular Dp on an Edelbrock Air Gap, Morrosso 6 Qt Sidewinder Pan with Diamond Strip Windage all to a M22 and 3.08 12 Bolt Posi. The Ignition System is obvious. Approx 600Hp on pump Gas and gets just over 20mph CDN at 55 mph cruising. A lot of of Old School tech.

I think a Crane 138551 (238/246 @ .050, 0.595 int./0.615 exh. lift with a 112 LSA) Cam would be more suitable for this setup though. I've got a set of 3.31 gears that I put in at times but with the price of gas I'm content to drive it with precise smoothness and under 3000 rpm most the time - LOL.

Ron, Why the rewiring of the wiper switch?

I did this on mine, I just brought the dark blue wire forward from the original pump.
I used an "unknown" pump, talked the guys at autozone into letting me paw thru thier stick until I found one with the bracket I wanted.

I attached the new pump to the original washer bottle bracket, then popped the original bottle back on.

I took power off the horn relay (thru a 5 amp inline fuse) and connected the dark blue wire to the pump to provide a ground.

It works great.

We also reworked an S10 wiper motor to replace the stocker, looks way better than the old one, much better valve cover clearance, and it moves fast enough to actually keep up with a hard rain!

Jim: I'm not really rewiring the switch I'm still using the Black Hi-Speed and Medium Blue Low-Speed terminals. Basically as you say run power to Electric Pump then run a line from the pump motor to the Dark Blue Terminal on the Wiper Switch. The Wiper Switch provides the ground to run the electric Pump when you push on the Switch Button. I did not connect the original Dark Blue Wire to operated the Relay that engages the Plunger Washer Pump on the switch as I use this terminal to run the Electric Pump.

The Original wiring is left intact if you want the novelty of running the old Plunger Mechanism it's just a matter of switching wires on the switch terminal. I suppose you could put in a 2 pole single throw SX and run either system. :o))

Ah I see what your talking about - you connected the "-" terminal of the Electric Pump to the Dark Blue Terminal on the Plunger Relay of the Wiper Motor. Yes that way you would not have to get at the Dash Switch.
