This picture is just to show what the Rocker Molding is.
Sometimes these are really easy to remove and sometimes really hard. They are actually hooked into the top and the bottom. You have to remove the bottom first
q Remove the screws at both ends. Buy your new ones at any hardware store, they still make the same screws just about anywhere. Buy them in stainless steel.
q Most of the time, you will have to remove some or all of the R/S Moldings (the 3 pieces above the rocker molding) to take off the Rocker Molding. If you don’t need to remove them, just wait and see which ones will be in your way. If you are disassembling the car, remove the R/S Moldings FIRST.
q Remove the rocker moldings by taking this siding removal tool (http://homerepair.about.com/od/exteriorhomerepair/ss/using_ziptool.htm (http://homerepair.about.com/od/exteriorhomerepair/ss/using_ziptool.htm)) and hooking it into the bottom/front of this molding and pulling it down a little and OUT to unhook it off the bracket that attaches to the rocker under it. This bracket starts about 7” from the end of this molding. You can only unhook it off the bottom. The top is set in real deep. You can slowly pull this tool across while laying under the car and NEVER touch your paint. You will be trying not to touch the paint. It is best if you have someone else holding this molding so that it does not jump and hit your paint.
q After you move across, the entire piece will be loose. If you did not remove the R/S moldings, you will now see which ones (if any) are in your way. If the door one is in your way, you may just be able to open the door to get it out of your way. Otherwise, you will have to go through the “pain in the rear” of removing the one on the door, taking the interior panel off. Chances are slim that you will have to do that.
q Save this piece, it is a totally restorable piece, even with dents. The new ones are good but these original ones are better. The original ones are also anodized aluminum, the repo’s are stainless steel.
When taking apart or putting back together, notice how the ENDS of the brackets are bent. You are best to do this to your new brackets, if you use new. I am not going to explain this here, but just take my word for it. It helps keep the Rocker Molding from Kinking.
Installing Rocker Moldings back on:
q Have a helper when you go to put them in. It will save you buying another pair. I have never damage the paint yet in installing these.
q Put a piece of masking tape, out of the way, above where you are working that shows you where the ENDS of the bracket are. You do not want to be pushing down where there is NO bracket. This will cause the molding to bend. You want the molding to go on straight.
q With the 4 hands holding the molding on top of the bracket, you feel to make sure that your partner has them for sure in the top groove. If he/she does not, keep showing them how they can tell that it is in the top groove. You will have no trouble teaching them this and you will have no trouble learning it yourself. Go ahead and let go of your end to show them. Just keep putting it on this groove and removing it until you get it and they get it. (Again, easier to do with the R/S Moldings off.)
q Now that you both get when it is in the groove, YOU hold the molding with the door open at the back of the car and in the middle of the car. Have your partner hold it at the front of the car. There job is to make sure that it does not unhook and for them to NOT hold it OUSIDE of the tape mark that you did earlier. They will be applying enough pressure to keep the molding on the groove. DO NOT LET THEIR HANDS, OR YOUR, GO PAST THE BRACKET.
q Now YOU will twist down and INTO the car, and they will do the same. Again, make sure your hand to the rear of the car is inside the tape twisting down/in. Their end will go in easily and your will also. You tell them when to twist down. Count 1,2,3.
q You are done. If you do this by yourself it is easy to damage the paint and you will be buying a new Rocker Molding. It will Kink.
I repeated certain things above to stress them. Hope this helps.
