View Full Version : That wonderful smell of a 41 year old car...

My 67 has fairly new carpets. Still it has that old car smell that nothing seems to be able to cure.

I got my first (of many ordered) Camaro books, and pulled out the rear seat. It was hard to do, until I realized the hooks are not at the centre of the seat, but one on each side, closer to the sidewalls than the centre. Piece of cake.

I don't have a problem with some peoples obsession when it comes to keeping original parts, but why one previous owner decided to put back a half rotten, stinking, 41 year old piece of fabric inside the seat, after he changed the covers, is something I will never understand.

Found the rear seat belts as well. They have been cut so only 2 inches of original belts are still there, attached to the original anchors. Are there supposed to be 2 or 3 sets of belts in the rear?

The floor under the seat is rust colored. Surface rust. There is a silver looking (sound killing?) carpet under the regular carpet.
I guess I'll need to use a steel brush on the floor, then use some rust inhibitor. Can't figure out why somebody would change the carpet, change one floor pan, and not treat the floor inside?

I've fixed the horn! My first Camaro repair!:hurray:

I'm on the roll! I think.

the number of seat belts depends on the interior. some had two, some had three. I believe that the deluxe interior had 3 and the standard had 2. Anyone else know for sure???

I could only see two sets, but it looked like they where anchored very close together. That's why I'm asking.
The car has deluxe interior, but according to the VIN #, it came with the standard interior when it was new.

Pretty sure all 68 and 69 coupes had 3 belts in back, 2 in front, all standard. 67's might be 2 in back but I dont know for sure.

As said, one seat belt for each passenger.
Silver stuff is jute padding, carpet padding, like in the house, adds body to the carpet. It was glued in place.

67's had only two seat belts in the back. I read somewhere it was listed as only a 4 person car when they came out.

Yes,
I have never seen a 67 with 3 belts in the back seat.

I bought a 30,000 mile untouched original 69 Z. It had been in a guys collection in upstate New York for 10 + years. It had a real musty smell when I got it. I found the front passenger side of the carpet had become wet at some time and that was the culprit. I shampooed it two or three times and let it sit out in the hot sun for a couple of days. I also took the seats out and sprayed them with a disinfecting spray and some Fabreeze and let them sit for a while to totally dry out. I was able to totally get the old car smell out of it. It had a real neutral fresh smell and I kept it all original.

Here is your seatbelt answer.

67 = 2 belts (or 3 if you are VERY lucky)

May sound off topic, but stick with me.
A guy I work with who is in sales, was out with a friend of his that got really drunk. He ended up giving this guy a ride home. The guy ended up puking in his car 2-3 times on the ride to his house.
My friend, being in sales, had a serious problem regarding the odor in his car. Turned out a detailer in town advertised an "ionization process" to completely eliminate odors.

he took his car there for the treatment...had to leave it for 36hrs, and the odor is gone. Completely.

I think he paid $200 for the detailing which included the ionization, and I've been in his care several times and can vouch for the fact that there is NO odor at all.

Might be a solution for you guys that actually don't like that smell.

Me...I love it. Every old car smells that way :) :) :)

Here's something that works; at least it did for me after a Squirrel decided to die an rot under the rear sear of my 84 Volvo. Fill a plastic Pail about 1/2 full with Vinegar, then put about 3 heads of Celery with the tops cut off into the vinegar with the top extending out of the surface of the vinegar. The Celery ends act as transfer tube circulating air and deodorizing the environment. It might take a week or so and you may have to refresh the Vinegar and Celery but it works. Be sure to close all windows or seal anywhere air can get into the car.

I like the old musty vinyl smell. In the past week while I was replacing the power steering box I even took a break from working, sat in the car and just took a big whiff of that old musty interior. I think it actually rejuvanates me and gives me the drive to keep on working on this car. There is just something nostalgic and mystifying about the smell. Maybe it is an acquired taste since I have had the car for 14 years now. I could go without the smell of PB Blaster in my garage though.

I keep my '68 in my garage under a car cover. I used to actually see a little mold and mildew in the spring, or after damp weather, and of course it had that mildewy smell to go along.

A few years ago I cleaned the interior vigorously, then started using Lysol "Early Morning Breeze". I give the interior a pretty good fogging every month or so. No more bad smell and mildew is all gone. Lysol works GREAT!

Hey guys, not to rain on the liking of the mildew smell parade, but mold or mildew is actually quite bad for you. I have an allergry to it, always have, and it actually makes me quite sick. Last march, I bought a car on eBay and drove it back from Seattle to NY. The car ran fine, but the interior was really moldy, musty. By the end of the drive, I ended up stuck in bed with a fever. I then had some GI bleeding. It all went away, but I don't want to go through that again. I'm definitely not saying this can or will happen to everyone to that extent, but if you do a search, I think 20/20 did a piece on mold in homes and how people were ending up in the hospital. They eventually found their homes were filled with tons of black mold and that was the culprit.

Anyway, I'm done with todays safety piece. Enjoy the smell! haha.

Yeah... I vote "no" to mildew...
In terms of the smell of greese etc. What does not kill you makes you stronger!

Mold has become a big issue.
there are cases on the east coast where it is responsible for the death of children. Have not heard of one in the Midwest, but I am sure it exists. Anyone getting a new roof should look in their attic first. Mold will be the worst on the north then the east if you have it. Replace the plywood if you have it. If someone needs a better description, let me know. It is usually the worst on homes that the insulation blocks the soffit (eaves) from breathing.

On the ionizer thing, it really works, tho I don't think it would be a substitute for actually getting rid of any mold or mildew or other nasty growing stuff.

The 03 malibu I gave Dan when he turned 16 was the former company car of a smoker, nearly 200,000 miles worth. A good clean and shampoo job, and 36 hours with that ionizer machine, got rid of all nasty smells in that car.
