Hey guys,

My son just bought a 98 Camaro with a 3800 series V6 in it. Aside from an intake system, what are a few other good bolt-ons? I'd like to see him pick up about 20-30hp at the wheels from stock. Figure he'll get a good 10hp from the intake. I saw about 15hp on the old LT1.

LOL. He would have gotten a Z28 but the insurance was too high for him.

Do the v-8 conversion and don't tell the insurance company  ;) :D

Rear gears i think would be the best choice and leave the engine stock. This way he gets the performance and looses some top end. He will also get to experiance the paying for more gas as would have been the case witha v-8. Resale on the car will be better, just change the gears out to the stockers. Would you buy a v-6 camaro with engine mods. Not me. Just my thoughts.

Forced induction is out due to reliability concerns. Joe, you make a good point. We won't be adding anything that can't be reverted back to stock easily.

Aside from the intake, a good cat back system would help. Also, if his car does not have the posi rear, swap out the one legger from a 3.42 posi. My 96 RS came with the 3.42 posi and I added a K&N intake and a Borla. I love the performance and 32 mpg on the highway isn't that bad either. Quite a few people have added NOS to the v6. If you plan to add NOS, in addition to the mods above, I would add headers, a new high flow cat, and MSD DIS 4 with 3 coil adapters for the ignition. If you don't want to add nitrous, then stay away from the headers. In my book the few hp increase on a mainly stock engine is not worth the expense of buying and installing headers.

Thanks guys,

It came with a 3.42 posi. I think we are going to do the intake and cat-back for now. That should keep him happy until the performance bug bites again.
