I'm a little confused now!.....I have a 68 coupe with a standard ratio power steering gearbox and my pitman arm measures 5 3/8" center to center....Is this a normal measurement?.....How many different pitman arms are there?....Frank, from D&R, says his pitman arms are around 6" center to center and the only smaller one he has is a 5 1/4" which is for manual steering!.....What to do??.....D&R has a decent price for one along with a 10% online order discount!.....The arm however doesn't have the grease fitting.....I just want to make sure I order the correct one!

If you want less turns lock to lock, get the longer pitman arm. It's available locally at any auto parts store. Moog and others sell both the long and short PS arms. Those do not have the grease fitting.

Pitman, manual K6150 68-69 (short)
Pitman K6151 PS, short 5.25"

Pitman, PS K6154, 67-69 5.78" long, (probably 5 3/4") 32 splines 1.1-1.18 diam. No longer available from Moog.
Pitman, PS , long, Moog# 6582 New production run, no grease fitting - Currently available at any auto parts store that sells Moog parts.

Pitman, PS long, TRW # 18770 Same as above. Possibly a Moog part in a TRW box.
NOTE: There are two length pitman arms for power and two lengths for manual. Std 17 to 1 ratio power steering uses 5.25" Long Manual pitman arms are hard to find these days.
Optional fast ratio manual or PS, uses a 5.7" long Pitman arm.

OK, I think I understand now!.....There are 2 length pitman arms for power steering: 5 3/8" (Standard Ratio), 5 7/8" (Quick Ratio).....There are also 2 length pitman arms for manual steering: 5 1/4" (Standard Ratio), 5 3/4" (Quick Ratio).

So there's an 1/8" difference between manual and ps?
Would you actually feel that difference while driving?

I don't think there is really any length difference between the power and non power short arms or the power and non-power long arms. I think it's more in how they got listed or how they got measured.

I have a long PS pitman and a short manual pitman so I don't have a full set of each to compare. I don't think my long PS pitman is 5 7/8" long, it's more like 5 3/4" but I'll measure it and verify.

1/8" difference won't make any noticeable difference.

Here are my 2 pitman arms. The brand new one is a Moog K6582 which does have a grease fitting. Pozzi's webpage says the new production run does not have the grease fitting (maybe the one I bought has been sitting on a shelf for a long time, I don't know). It measures about 5-3/4" long (give or take a tiny bit).

The older shorter one measures 5-1/4" and is an original GM pitman arm with a 3935075B casting number. Wish I could remember for sure what it came off. My 68 Camaro originally had manual steering which I converted over to a 69 variable ratio P/S gear box back in the mid-80's. I don't remember if the pitman arm is my original manual pitman arm or if it came on the 69 gear box. Regardless, I used it on the P/S box, so I know it fits and is usable.

Don't forget that there are long and short steering arms on the spindles as well. Shorter steering arm goes with the longer pitman arm for the fast ratio, and the longer steering arms go with the shorter pitman arm for the regular ratio steering.

I ordered my car w/ the optional manual fast ratio steering. It had a long pitman arm and short bolt-on spindle steering arms!

I could turn a 90 degree corner w/ one spin of my steering wheel and it turned lock to lock at the A-arms 3.5 turns.

And was a real bear to parallel park w/ my CRAGAR 14" x 6" deep dish chrome reverse on it w/ E-60 tires!
