As I continue this Z28 restoration I have come across another question. In the box of parts that came with the car is a light weight 15 pound flywheel. Since the tranny has to come out again I was wondering if I should replace the standard flywheel with this one. Stats on the Z are as follows: stock motor, m-21, and 4.10 gears.
your thoughts please.
thanks
Bill

You are going to get some argument on this one, but I'd do it for sure. I and my buddy did ours and loved the instant response and acceleration.
With higher gears like 3.08, it might not work well, but with 4.10's you will like it. You will have to slip the clutch a bit more carefully but that's it. We didn't find it hard at all.

If you want to rev and rev fast, the light flywheel will get you there. I had the 16lb Gm in 350 and m-20 / 3:55 gears. it reved throught the gears rapidly. Its a different feel, almost like there is not enough gear(it accelerates rapily in the gear). I liked it so much i placed another 16 lb flywheel on my zz4/tremec/ 3:55 combo. With the higher tremec first gear, i can literally idle from dead stop to full engagement of clutch.

Hopefully you can get some feedback from others w/ 302/m21/4:10 combos.

good luck

I have the light GM flywheel also in my 69 crossram Z. with a muncie trans with custom gears 296 1st, 221 2nd, 169 3rd. Great response for street use.
