View Full Version : Removal of rear leaf springs...

Just got some multi leafs that allegedly bolt right up in a mono leaf configuration.
I removed all of the bolts that hold the spring in place including the shock...
The problem I am having is with the rear eye bolts.
There seem to be two bolts - one is in the eye of the spring and goes through a bracket that connects to the frame. The second bolt secures the bracket to the frame.
The bottom one that goes through the eye of the spring has the nut on the outside and the gas tank precludes removal of the bolt.
The top bolt faces the opposite direction. After a long bout of wrenching, I was able to remove the nut from this top bolt - the one that connects the bracket to the sub frame.
However, the bolt itself will not budge. It is in a very tight spot. Anyone know of a tool that will help, or have any ideas? I'd rather not drop the gas tank....

You need to remove the nut from the upper and lower shackle bolts and then pry the shackles apart. If the bolts are staggered properly you'll be able to do this without removing the tank.

What he said. And when you go to replace them you should change out the bushings if needed since its a pain to have to remove them again. Also throw some metal lubricant on the bolts and nuts to prevent rust (cant remember what its called for the life of me right now but its common).

On getting the bolts out. I had to push with my hand on the one side of the bolts and wrench on the bolt head to get mine out. As if you were trying to remove a screw. If you put pressure on the backside of the bolt and twist it will eventually come out.

Its a pain in the arse! Good luck!

So I got back to my garage this weekend and took out the rear shakles on my leaf springs. You guys are exactly right. I removed both bolts, one on each side, and then just pried the shackles apart with a wrench. No problem. Popped right out.
Oh, and PB works miracles.
Thanks.
