View Full Version : 67 Front Springs Question
KAWSAM62 Oct 3rd, 08, 08:25 AM hi,
when my camaro was still on the road, the front end would rub (just barely) when hitting big bumps in the road, its a big block with big block springs (new), 245/60/15 tires, i want to raise the front end a little and im thinking about making giant washers (the same diameter as the coil spring) to put on top of the coil springs, i work at a sheetmetal shop and could make them out of steel, maybe 3/16 thick and put 3 on each side of the car, this would add a 1/2 or so to the overall height of the front end. anyone done something like this to say stop, heres a better way?, would i have any issues?
thx for time and help
scott
TJS69 Oct 3rd, 08, 08:32 AM They sell spacers at places like summit or Jegs, for reasons like that. A 245/60/15 is a big tire for the front. I am sure it would rub ! You might want to try a friends, smaller tires !
KAWSAM62 Oct 3rd, 08, 09:09 AM on second thought i think they are 235/60/15s cause they just barely kissed the fenders edge i looked at jegs and summit and didnt find spacer for a 67? and what i saw was 1.0 or greater anyway, i think that would be to much in my case? the 245/60/15s are on my 72 chevelle, i get confused sometimes:yes:
thx scott
TJS69 Oct 3rd, 08, 11:28 AM These are what I would probably go with :
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=MRG-1285&N=700+115&autoview=sku
If the 1" is too much, I would cut them down in a mill. (unless they are to soft) For $11.00 each - you can't go wrong.
davidpozzi Oct 4th, 08, 11:38 PM Global West sells an aluminum spring seat spacer that is only 3/8" thick or so. It would likely raise the car twice that amount, or 3/4".
You'd have to call them to get more info.

1st 67 SS/RS Oct 6th, 08, 05:58 AM David is right, I have a set of the GW 3/8" shims, $30. They have a nice concave grove in the top for the spring to fit in them and they have a slight twist to match the shape of the spring seat. I am still debating on using my set. I have a 67 with the Hotchkis SBC TVS kit and I run 15x7 ralleys with 245/60's (drum brakes). I have a slight rub with I hit a decent bump in the road. The Hotchkis springs keeps the travel to a minium. I did have to replace my body mounts (polygraphite) to keep the front from rubbing all the time. I have read where some people have replaced the top inside fender bolts with a smooth shorter bolt to help with the rubbing.
pdq67 Oct 6th, 08, 06:02 AM Our old cars really need to have front rims that are wider, offset or dished in the back and not out towards the front.
I say this b/c my car came stock w/ 14" x 6" w/ 3.75" b/s and w/ my 14" x 7" and 3.5" b/s they rubbed the lips!
