I have a full spool in the 9 in. in the 69', its always made some noise in tight turns, a little popping and it would shake the car. This was with et streets on it. I put some smaller street tires on it and it got better. I just put some 275/60 drag radials on it and it sounds and feels like the passenger axle is going to fall out. I pulled the center section out and everything looks fine

the spool has 2500-3500 miles on it and I know they
aren't made for the street but whats wrong

When you go around corners, the outside tire will want to roll farther than the inside tire. The axle will twist (because there is no differential anymore with a spool) untill the force exceeds the friction between the road and the rubber. The tire will slip for a moment and release the force that is twisting the axle. This will happen over and over while turning so you hear the snapping or popping sounds while turning.

If the noise bothers you, don't worry. It will probably go away soon and you can replace the spool with a proper posi unit when you rebuild the axle. tongue.gif :D This is why they are not recomended for the street. smile.gif

The smaller tires reduce the problem because they have a smaller moment arm (smaller radius) to the axle. Kinda like a breaker bar. If you push with a force of 100 lbs on a 2' bar, you produce 200LB-FT. Use a 4' bar, you produce 400LB-FT. Same concept.

Are you 100% you have a spool? Lockers make noise as well and it is normal. If you do have a spool I hope you have VERY strong axles if you are driving it on the street. Honestly, as mentioned above a spool has no place in a street car, they are for race only applications (dirt oval or drag). Also you have to have your tire pressure the exact same from side to side, if not it will want to turn/pull one way or another. The "safest" or less dangerous way to run a spool on the street is with true street tires (not sticky tires), this way the tires slip easier and doesn't load the axles as much but, then you have to worry about spinning out if you ever get on it in a turn or if the road is wet. Sticky tire + spool + turns = broken axle Be carefu.

pulled it out, its got a moser full spool with moser 35 spline axles, I drove the car with 28 inch et streets and it made some noise but with the drag radials now it feels like the wheel is falling off

an auburn posi is top of the list

I think the spool may be worn because when I tried to leave hard in first the car studdered like the axle was spinning inside the rear

Ditch the spool before you screw something up more OR get hurt..

Oh, go with a true clutch posi or a Detroit Locker, not the Auburn cone posi..

Just my 2 cents..

Could you have damaged the splines on the spool? You mentioned the axles being OK, but maybe the spool is hurt. My friend cracked his mini-spool driving it on the street.

went ahead and took it apart and I'll get a posi now http://www.corral.net/photopost/data/500/4755rear_end1.JPG

I'd highly suggest you get into an Eaton posi unit and skip the Auburn. It's a stronger piece and is rebuildable as well.

I don`t think there is a clutch type posi unit available that will accept 35 spline axles. I could be wrong though. You can go with a 35 spline detroit locker and it will work great, I have one in my camaro. You will have to check the side bearing diameter though. You will need a 3.25" bore side bearing case to run this setup though. I bought all of my stuff through Moser, they had it all in stock. Good Luck, Brent
