Asked this question in another forum but got "maybe" & "I think so" for answers. I'm sure with all the members here this has been tried before so I'm looking for a definate answer before spending the bucks. 2 part question.. If I buy one of the reproduction factory type tachs like those sold by Ricks do I need a different printed circuit in the guage cluster (I have no tach now) or will it just be a matter of wiring it up ? Second question is will it work with an HEI distributor with no modification ? If not how do I make it work ? By the way I'm using an American Autowire harness and am still in the process of wiring the interior of the car. Thanks

It has indeed.
Perhaps a search will reveal what you seek?

Mark, looking through your other posts, I gather you're asking about a 67. Search "PCB tach" to get info on how to wire the tach at the cluster. As far as whether it will work with the HEI, search "tach filter". Jim has posted quite a few times about the filter he made for his tach/HEI setup, so if you get stuck go advanced and search under his username (JimM).

There are just so many variables, that there really isn't any "definitive answer."
Does this HEI have an original GM module and coil, manufactured in the 70's? or a copy manufactured in china last tuesday?
Put it in and hook it up. It will "probably" work. If it doesn't, or if it doesn't work well, there are a number of devices out there that may fix it up, including my tach filter design, MSD's, and even a choice of several used originally by GM back in the 70's and 80's. There are specific thread here that tell what cars you can find in the boneyard to pick a filter out of.

Thanks guys. I guess I'll order the tach & go from there.

I too am interested in adding a tach to my '69. I also have an Delco HEI.
I would like to make a suggestion to bookmark this topic in a sticky or a "library" section, along with other different topics. Search function is okay, but sometimes things are missed. Just a suggestion

I can answer the 69 question. I have an older original GM HEI dist & coil. I have an OER 69 tach with AAW harness set up for both. Everything worked with no issues & has for over a year now. Cant say for sure with the 67 dash with the softboard. Seems like it wouldnt matter, but I have never done it with the softboard.
