View Full Version : My 70 Camaro Prostreet Project
rtj Oct 11th, 08, 08:06 AM I sold a 68 BB Vette in January, and bought this retired race car out of the Tampa Bay area. It was a 8 sec flat car in it's day, but the owner switched to a 67 Camaro for a few years, then a TT SB car, and was currently building new car, so this one had to go.

It won't be as high-end as some of the cars on this section of the forum and won't be a show car, but it has it's roots in street racing and I have a bunch of the Orlando Street National Videos it competed in, so it will be a fun car.

prostreet69camaro Oct 14th, 08, 11:51 AM Looks like it is coming together. It will be a nice car when finished.
fatblock Oct 14th, 08, 06:24 PM rtj...looks like you are doing your part to stimulate the economy.:D.
Lookin good, will be a beast for sure with the boosted zz502.Keep us posted.I have a procharged zz502 on e85 project coming up soon.No intercooler..will be relying on the latent heat dispersion of e85 to lower charge temp.Good luck with your build.
rtj Oct 19th, 08, 03:29 PM Thanks for the kind words guys.
Here is a bit of an update on the progress (spending).
Expensive driveshaft yoke for the roller bearing in the Dedenbear tailhousing.
http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff319/rtjohns/transyoke.jpg
Rebuilt brakes, hubs, and new spindles.
http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff319/rtjohns/spindlesandbrakes.jpg
I ordered new a-arm cross shafts, but after inspection decided the ones on the car were heavier and in good shape, so they will stay.
http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff319/rtjohns/a-arms.jpg
I believe the stop-bolt is so the car picked up the front wheels early. Will probably have to remove it.
Bought an Dart hi-rise, but when it came, the directions said it needed machining for factory bb heads. Went with an Edelbrock and did some gasket matching
Before
http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff319/rtjohns/intakebeforematching.jpg
After
http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff319/rtjohns/initialporting.jpg
Chevy High Performance magazine (Dec) had an article on a ZZ502 car with a vortec supercharger without an intercooler. The magazine claimed that on 8 lbs of boost it would make 800HP, so maybe the ZZ502 for this car with a intercooled procharger at 10 or 12 lbs will make a bit more.
fatblock Oct 19th, 08, 05:40 PM rtj..nice intake manifold gasket match. Can you show a picture of the same gasket applied to the Eddy roval port atop the zz502 and what you did there to gasket match.I only ask..because I did not gasket match my now retired performer rpm intake with the oem rectangular 840,s.I left the manifold alone..thinking the mismatch will act like a dam and aid in intake reversion issues that I had at the time.

Okay, I'll get a picture of the gasket on the heads this weekend if I'm not working. I put it on there a few weeks ago and it is a perfect match, head-to-gasket.
rtj Oct 20th, 08, 06:38 PM I was working in the garage tonight, so I pulled the plastic of the motor and took a couple of pics.

Man, I want to get this engine in the car and the trans bolted up.
Dougs72Nova Oct 20th, 08, 08:23 PM Sharp car when you got it, but even better now! Bet you cannot wait to get that thing rolling!
PRO 48 Fleetline Oct 24th, 08, 01:47 PM I love to see these body styles over the early model Camaros looks so sweet !
Next weekend should be able to start working on getting the motor and trans installed.
http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff319/rtjohns/wheelson.jpg
I'm intentionally keeping this car as close to it's race configuration as possible. So, I picked up a plate last weekenend for the front. I'll add year stickers like the ones shown on the photo.

PRO 48 Fleetline Nov 9th, 08, 07:27 PM Looking good looks fast sitting still!
z2fast8 Nov 9th, 08, 08:38 PM did you really race it with no front crossmember?
rtj Nov 10th, 08, 03:32 AM did you really race it with no front crossmember?
It ran like that for many years, and was originally done by a company called NBS Performance Chassis. There is a round tube crossmember ahead of the original and it provides a place to mount the rack.
Although, I'm thinking of putting some kind of light bolt-on in the original location.

Modifying the front crossmemeber is something that's become a fairlly common modification, especially on cars that compete in Outlaw 10.5 classes. The crossmember is modified for a couple of reasons, weight reduction and also for clearance issues when a non stock engine such as a blown hemi is installed in a car in which a class rule is the car must maintain the stock front suspension.
mccorry Nov 10th, 08, 06:53 AM Ooooooooooooooooooooohhhhhhh... I love the '70 Camaro!
rtj Nov 30th, 08, 09:25 AM 4 days off and managed to make some progress. Got the motor plate on and the intake.
http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff319/rtjohns/enginewithmotorplate.jpg
Used the old midplate to line up the new one.
http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff319/rtjohns/midplatealignment.jpg
Removed one track from the garage door to make room for the lift.
http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff319/rtjohns/hoist.jpg
It is a tight fit between the balancer and the rack and pinion, but I can probably move the rack back a bit.

Pro-Street69Camaro468 Nov 30th, 08, 10:28 AM I cant believe I haven't posted here before this is where I belong in the PS section.Making progress I see I have visited but never typed a word.I just want you to know you have my motor,,,, or at least one that I wanted to get I almost got robbed on ebay for $6500 from a spammer.Looks real good so far keep it up....

RATHOWSE Dec 1st, 08, 08:20 PM RTJ, I see in you earlier posts you said "NBS" did some of the chassis work. how did it look? BTW, its looking good, I have never figured out what is more fun working on the cars or opening the boxes left by the UPS man (aka--Santa Baby:D)
tilley88 Dec 1st, 08, 09:36 PM I vote the UPS man showing up.......
Rickdef17 Dec 1st, 08, 09:44 PM Fine work. Garage looks good too.
Thanks for the words of encouragement everyone. The motor has been abused, but was running when pulled it 4 years ago. It should be good for learning about supercharging when I can afford the blower.
Yeah RATHOWSE, NBS did all the work. I tried to find if they were still in business, as the car has a big decal on the back window from them, and it would be nice to replace it with a new one. I'm not a welder, but have lots of engineering background, and I'd say the work is solid. It looks like they knew what they were doing and just did it. The previous owner really pushed the car ( NOS bottles the size of scuba tanks ) and after wire brushing the whole frame, I found no cracks.

They are still around. I think in St.Pete I was Looking at project in St.Pete and remember seeing the shop. My buddy owns Aerospace Components and they do a lot of buisness with them, I could get a address and # if you need.

That would be great. Knowing they are in St. Pete, I could probably find them now.
Aerospace rebuilt my front hubs and brakes a few months ago. They didn't charge much more than the price of the rebuild kits.
RATHOWSE Dec 5th, 08, 09:42 AM Yep, they are good folks
speedshifter Dec 7th, 08, 09:50 PM BTW the stop bolts in the A arms are used for tuning the launch at the track. If you plan on serious racing you might find them helpful. If not I'd remove them.
Neat car!

RATHOWSE Jan 5th, 09, 10:26 PM rtj, what direction are you going on this project, meaning is this "street" or "race" only or a combination of both? I would be interested in the engine specs with the ProCharger as this is a direction I am considoring with my 67PS. I got out of the racing thing about 10 years ago when my buisness ate up all of my play time, hence the 67 gets no attention at all, I play with my 68, 69 putting them back to stock so I am about 10 years behind the curve. I would really like to talk to you more about your setup. thx Al

I'm a bit of a hack. I'll be the first to admit that. I had the ZZ502. It's a GM crate motor with forged internals and is 9.5:1 or 9.6:1 CR. The motor was somewhat abused, but ran before it was pulled. Basically a car moving company moved my cars and delivered one with no engine oil, so I fought to get insurance coverage. It was kind of ugly. They wanted me to sell the old motor and after two guys backed out, I bought it myself.
I was looking for a ProStreet roller and stumbled on this Camaro. I got a lot of bang-for-the-buck with this car (in my opinion). Because the car was fairly well done, I decided to spend some $$ on the trans and rear, which should be good for 1000 HP or more. So once the car is shook out with a carb (NA), I plan to learn about supercharging. Meth injection might be added. If this 502 can't hold up, I'll either rebuild it, pull the one in my 75 vet, or buy something like one of those Scott Schaffirof 582 low deck big blocks.
This car will be used to cruise around town a bit and now and then take it out to the track and make a couple of passes. I'm not really interested in bracket racing, right now.
My plan for installing a procharger on a basically stock 502 may seem somewhat naive, but I've worked on compressors and gas turbine engines for years, so I should be able to figure something out.
I have some book references for superchargers if you are interested. On-line the BDS site was a good source of tech info and the Procharger site is somewhat helpful, but you have to search. Once I get into the procharger owners group, I may get access to more info.
I would have gone with a roots blower and really wanted to, but the motor was 9.5:1 and once I got reading about the intercooled centrifugals, I was sort of hooked.
Got some new tires mounted. Tried to fit 2.125" and 2" Supercomps, but ended up sending them both back. The 2" Competion headers just needed a bit of adjustment to make them work for now. The silver hood with black stripes got a bit of flat black touch-up to make it work for a few months, as I'll probably have to cut a hole in it for the procharger or get a new hood.
http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff319/rtjohns/newtires.jpg
http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff319/rtjohns/headers.jpg
http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff319/rtjohns/flatblackhood.jpg
Gave the F2 procharger a good look over. Looks like it has a new front half case (evident in the photo above). The compressor wheel looks good, no fod damage to be seen, but looks like they had to do some grinding on two blades to get it to balance. Just a guess, I may send it back to Procharger for a check-up.
The reading I've done says you really have to brace the cogged units or the belts won't last. Also, looks like I'll have to upgrade the valve springs. May go solid roller and add roller rockers at the same time, as they make some converson studs for the zz502.
Working too much OT the past few months to do much on the car.
Skeeter55 Feb 1st, 09, 07:19 PM Man that looks cool (the hood), also that Procharger set up should wake those nice fat tires up... Very nice e project.
Have been working too much OT to do much on the car, but got to the junk yard today and grabbed all this for $88: inner fenders, upper a-arms, torsion bar, and a alternator bracket for the passenger side. All rust free.
http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff319/rtjohns/CopyofDSC_0795.jpg
I'll cut up the inner fenders to make them fit around the front roll cage. Probably will cut out 40% of the metal.
Guys on another forum are saying 800-1000HP out of a GM 502 is possible with an F2. But they also said at the highest levels the heads tend to crack near one of the head bolts. Lots of other tricks ($) are needed to make it work best: two bypass valves, braces, electric water pump, crank supports, et cetera. This could get expensive.
