my friend has a 1971 monte carlo. we tried to decode the vin to find the original engine size, but the decode website, but the last 6 digits revealed nothing.

any ideas. be glad to provide the vin.
we know the car was made at the now defunct gm plant at broening highway.

Try the forums at www.firstgenerationmontecarlo.com , really nice guys that specialize in first gen monte's.

As far as the engine size, I *think* that started in the vin in 72 or 73, and it was the fifth letter, not the number that told you that. Like the 73 Camaro for instance, if the fifth digit is a "T", then it is a Z28.
