Hi, I just purchased the above motor and have some questions. Does the gm oil filter adapter require a gasket? Can I use a stock gm oil filler cap in the valve cover? instead of a push in style? Will the starter off my 283 fit? Both motors have the smaller flywheel for the 10.4 inch clutch. If I stay wth the short water pump can I use my current pulleys? Thanks.

Dave, I will try to help. The oil filter adapter does not use a gasket. I am unsure what oil filler is on a 330HO so just try a screw in style and see for your self. Find one from another buddys car to try it. The starter may be OK. The flywheel governs the starter selection. Big 14" flywheel uses a different starter than the 12-3/4" flywheel. The thing to look for is the bolt pattern either "in line" or "staggered". Some blocks are not drilled for both patterns, you will need to check. I think the pulleys will work if you use the same water pump. I don't know much about anything built in the last 10 years or so but the older stuff is pretty clear. Hope this helps,
-Mark.

Dave, one thing I would suggest, unless they've changed something recently, you'll need to either use a bypass hose that is used on the vortec engines (that extra hole in the front of the intake)....or.....drill 4-6 1/8 inch holes in the T-stat.

The reason for this, is they no longer use a block that has that "third hole" into the water pump.

It will overheat.

thanks everyone. zz430 wear does this bypass hose hook up to? Is it easier to to drill the thermostat?

I have a 330 hp crate in my 69 and its never come close to overheating. Installed it last July and drove it all summer. And the long PF35 oil filter will fit.

Recently, they just came out with the 2nd design intake on those 330HP motors.

Seems that's when these problems started.

Dave, you can tee the bypass hose into the 5/8 heater hose....doesn't look real great though.

I went through a real nightmare of overheating on the last 330 I did, please believe me, it is a problem known now by GM, and they say to do just what I've suggested.

They even say to use a 160 T-stat with 6 holes, but I found that was too cold.

I dont have the deluxe version. I will be running a performer rpm air gap manifold. Do the heads have a water outlet on them? if so where? Or do i run it from the intake manifold. I think I just plug the water outlets in the back of the intake? Lastly I want to change the cam but am starting to run short on cash, does this motor have good power stock?

Yeah, each head has a 3/8 pipe plug that can be removed for use with a gauge.

Plugging the rear water ports on back of intake is ok too.

I bought my crate motor last september or october and just now ready to install it. How can i tell which block I have?... Is it just the one's with the extra hole in the front (or do they all have the extra hole) that need the bypass hose?

You'll have to remove the water pump, and see if the hole is drilled all the way through.

For years, I always wondered what that hole was for, now I know. http://www.camaros.net/forum/rolleyes.gif

It only seems to be a problem with the 2nd design manifold (spread bore).

if you have a heater core hooked up, i think that acts as the bypass until the t-stat opens. or, couldn't you just carefully drill that extra hole in the block?
