View Full Version : Specific Tool Needed
67CamaroRS/SS Oct 15th, 08, 08:09 AM I run a Q-Jet with the APT. The plug to protect the screw has a square drive to it. Larger than a 1/4" drive, but smaller than a 3/8" drive. Also, the head on the APT screw itself looks like a double "D". but much smaller. Does anyone know of a tool made just for this. I am not so much worried about the plug as I am for the screw. I know I can modify a bolt, but I thought that with this style carb being almost 40 years old that someone would have made a specific tool for them by now. Thanks.
12run Oct 15th, 08, 01:53 PM NAPA and Snap-On both sell tools for these carbs.
bretcopsey Oct 15th, 08, 01:59 PM I think you're speaking of "clutch head" fasteners? As said above, NAPA carries clutch head screw drivers.

67CamaroRS/SS Oct 15th, 08, 03:08 PM Now I know there are tools to adjust the idle mixture screws, but I need something to adjust the APT screw. Will any of those work for that?
Oldrocker Oct 15th, 08, 03:48 PM I think the one I linked to has the bit for it but I'm not 100% sure. I made mine out of a piece of 5/16 steel tubing and bent the end into shape with pliers. Square off the other end so you can put a wrench on it and you are set.

Yes, but you should look under the heading "engines" and start a new topic.
Mat Klemp Oct 15th, 08, 06:47 PM Charlie. I have never seen the tool you need commercially available. There were 2 in the world, until one broke.:D I have sent you another. Even Cliff Ruggles book shows a home made one. The 1/8 " pipe plug that is tapped into the body of the carb you have has a square drive which is uncommon. I forgot that the tool is needed to remove the plug also. If you desire the plug could be replaced with a more common hex drive.

novaderrik Oct 16th, 08, 02:34 AM my Edelbrock 1910 qjet carb has a regular hex head pipe plug up top, and a regular flat head screw down inside.
67CamaroRS/SS Oct 16th, 08, 07:25 AM Mat, I went to Napa today and got a KD tool that looks much like the head on a 5/16" bolt that Cliff shows in his book. I am going to try it. It may work, it may not. For some reason, the car is running like crap today. It's somewhat foggy and a little humid here today. Not real humid, but there is a touch of it in the air. I am hoping that it's this making it run poorly. I am going to try to retune it and see if it comes back. Thanks for the tool. Have you received that parts I sent back to you yet? There "DG" rods you requested are in there along with all the original parts. Thanks again.
