Team,

Your help is requested. I've been a member for years, visit and learn often, but don't post much.

I'm trying to help a friend ID his interesting 68 Camaro roller. I know the 68s are the most difficult to accurately ID. My searches have not confirmed anything other than its an interesting car.

VIN# 124378N347105 The car has two seperate cowl tags. (pics below)

It is equipped as follows: auto, big block frame mounts, 12 bolt, A/C, power disc brakes, power windows, power door locks.

Is this enough information?

Thanks!

Does the speedometer look like a normal 120 mph or is it 140mph?

Looks like it's probably an export car.

looks interesting - high probability an export considering it has ac (if its orig) and the second tag is usually for foreign country requirements.....

lets see more info though

It is interesting that the second tag has the same safety statement that is on the bottom of a normal 68 Camaro tag.

The vin looks early for a Yenko but one 68 Yenko was found with AC

This one is a little different. I've never seen a conformance tag added. Where is the second tag located?

What's the stamped axle code? http://www.camaros.org/drivetrain.shtml#RearAxleNumbers

Looks to be on top of the cowl, roughly behind where the brake booster would be.

The magic mirror tag is being discussed in the 68 Yenko thread since they also used this tag.

Yenko’s special order cars had COPO 9737 including a 140 speedometer and large front sway bar, that is why I asked about the speedo.

The magic mirror tag was also used by Chevy in the early 60s on many cars.
Would be interesting to know when the magic mirror tag was first and last used on non-Camaro applications.

It is interesting that this car has both the early Chevy magic mirror tag and an additional tag for the safety statement that was used on the normal 68 tag.

amazing what pops up on this site :)

Thanks Mark. Call me 'sieve'. :)

Turns out there's a third car that also has an early ACC tag. No mention of the extra tag on it. I don't think these three cars have anything to do with Yenko.

Wonder if the cars were delivered overseas to military personel? Haven't seen anything that ties any of the three cars together (options, location, etc).

on the trim tag paint code after the R 2 is that a stamped dash or a scratch on the trim tag?

The speedo is 120MPH. Pictures are below of it and the firewall near the cowl tags.

How about a factory mule, or other type of vehcile originally intended for testing that was later sold to an employee.

Just thinking outloud.

Sorry this took so long to get. The owner runs a body shop and was swamped with collision work lately.

Kurt S: The axle stamp is PP110202

JOE58: It appears to be a scratch after the R2

Anything else that he should check?

Thanks again!

1965 appears to be the last year this style trim tag was used. Maybe they ran out of tag with the statement of certification and had to use some old tags that were laying around. I seen where the did this with build sheets, cars built at one plant on build sheets from another plant (Impala)

The Magic Mirror tag was used on the 1968 Yenko COPO 9737 Camaros and on Export Camaros, so I guess it was used for a good reason.

I don’t think the reason was to omit the Fed Safety statement since this car has a separate Fed Safety statement added.

COPO, F&SO, and special order cars such as Police, Fire, Military, Hi Po COPO, Indy Pace Cars, etc., usually have something different on the trim tags when compared to the same model non-special order car. So I guess there was a good reason to have an identifier on the tag if the car was a special order.

I have seen this on Camaros, Chevelles, and Impalas.

My theory is that the Magic Mirror tag was used to identify the special order 1968 Camaros.

Since there was no field to ad a code to the normal 68 Camaro trim tag, like a 67 Camaro tag has, they used the Magic Mirror tag itself as an identifier. The Magic Mirror tag has an ACC field on it but it was left blank on this car and the 68 Yenko tags. Even with a blank ACC field the different tag was still a way to ID the special order.

Just a theory.
