Hi everyone.

I am trying to verify a numbers matching 1970 Z28 RS. The engine ID stamping appears correct along with the casting date and block casting number. The problem is that the VIN stamping on the engine pad has an additional 0 inserted in the otherwise correct 6 digit VIN number (now 7 digits total). I have been told that the Norwood Plant along with other automobile factories in the 60's and 70's did crazy things and engine ID enforcement was loose but has anyone run across this or have heard of such a thing? Is it most likely an assembly line error that just went unchecked or does it sound fishy? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Fred

Like your question at nastyz28.com, this was especially true for VN cars. My 70 Z COPO has the pad stamp with both large and small fonts.
If the broach marks are OK, there is no VIN by the oil filter and all of the other numbers and date codes (block casting, suffix date) match up, i'd be inclined to say just an error. See if anyone here with more experience has any further input.

I'd have to see a pic to render an opinion.
But I don't recall that on any 67-69 pad.....

Kurt,

Have you seen cases where the VIN stamp had a single digit 'incorrect' vin's (as compared to the car's VIN?).. ie.. where the VIN stamping was 'wrong' in that a single letter was stamped incorrectly? All this was 'manual', wasn't it? subject to human error, blindness, GAS attitude, etc?

correct, they even used different fonts or sizes of one occasionally

Kurt the 70 Z's, especialy in LA cars had very sloppy VIN stamps. Well documented with several examples. Jerry Certed this one (mine) as legit:

That's LA, NOR is different.
BTW, I wouldn't call that sloppy, just a continuation of what they were doing in 69.
