I'm new to the forum, have been looking at some of the other posts and I have a 69 van nuys built first week of September vin number.
124379L5002XX :thumbsup:

this is what my cowl tag reads
ST 69 12437 LOS 101321 BDY

TR 713 55 B PNT

9A K169

could you please decode the info from my cowl tag. Does my vin number fall into order with the cowl tag? I'm pretty sure what the cowl tag says, just needed verification. Have owned for 28 years.:yes:

1 = Chevrolet
2 = Camaro
4 = 8-cylinder engine
37 = coupe body
9 = 1969 model year
L = Los Angeles, CA assembly plant (Van Nuys)
5002XX = vehicle serial number sequence

Decode for body number: 101321

09A = Built the First week of September.
69-12437 = Coupe.
LOS = Built in Van Nuys California.
713 = Custom Houndstooth Black Bucket Seats.
55-B = Lower Color is Azure Turquoise and the Vinyl Top Color is Black.
K169 = internal plant scheduling code.

VIN and build date line up fine. Last VIN for Sep 68 was 502310, or about 2,100 cars after yours. Cool color and trim combo! :)

That is a really interesting tag! VN built other cars besides Camaros, but...

Assuming the 69 model year started with 100001, you car was the 1320th car down the line, but the 200th Camaro. K169 is still a mystery, but has something to do with cars per period. So your car was the K period 169th car, lets say. But your vin is 2xx, so the first 30-40 cars were not on the period? or it the K period started sept 1st and the J period was in aug with 30-40 cars depending on the last 2 digit in your VIN.

thanks for sharing!

Car was the 1320th order accepted by GM, the 2XX th Camaro built at LA, and the 169th car (LA built more than just Camaros) built during the K period (11th working day) of September 1968.

Does my vin number fall into order with the cowl tag?
Kinda. The VIN is a little low for the tag.
Not enough to worry as long as the color is correct on the hidden spots of the body and the partial VIN's are there, but more than I'd expect. It was a ramp-up period, so they weren't cranking them out yet....
I'd be curious what the complete VIN is. I'll send you an email. :)

Mark, thanks for the correction. So armed with that info, my 69 strike car was the A period 208 car, which makes it the first working day after the strike. Was that July 1 or June 1 or did they restart the numbering from A when ever they started building again?

They only reopened LA to finish the cars that were on the line when the plant closed on 4/19/69 due to the strike. They never started any new cars from scratch when the plant reopened in late June. I know there are some 05A dated Camaros, but they must have pulled them forward in the schedule so that they were in process by the time the plant closed.

Mark, my car is an 05A A208 and Charlie's is a 05A D160 http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/361619/page/0/fpart/6/vc/1

How does that fit in to the build order? thanks

Impossible to tell. GM reported 1000 camaros built at LOS in June (871) and July (137)and another 4200 passenger cars for the same period. Thats roughly 4 or 5 days of Camaro production at LA, so all of those cars reported in June and July were actually sitting somewhere on the line when the plant went on strike on 4/19.

Thanks for the response and information.

Is there a list of vin #'s to tell what the lowest known vin is. Does a low vin make your car any more valuable?

Is there any way to know how many camaro's were painted Azure turquoise or how often they changed colors?

Only 2.2% of the 69 production were Azure Turquiose

There's some cars still in the single digits around. Our database has about 16 in it before yours. No real value, but can be some conversation fodder. :)

http://www.camaros.org/exterior.shtml#ColorPercentages has the color info.

There is one 350 SS/RS here in Sweden with 08E on the tag with VIN L500440 and BodyNo 104033. I didn't take the plant sequenzecode.

My friend has a 67 camaro with the vin at just over 1000, pretty early 66 built.

I hate to say it... but the tag is a bit too far off for that VIN.
Both the build date and the "Plant Code" are off. It seems very strange.

Maybe the car got pulled off the line at some point? Care to share the entire VIN? I can tell you what would be around it....

The last 08E car I show in the database is L500474 so the chances of your L5002xx being a 09A is slim.

It is interesting comparing the order number with the other codes. I have a 69 impala 4dr in the list L001656, 09A with an order number of LOS 100046. Lowest order # I have seen for LOS.

The earliest by vin I have is L000272 and L000394 with plant codes of E122 and B072 respectively. Both are 08B bodies.

Something is definately fishy here. I don't think that tag is original to the car. :confused:

I noted the same problem above.
I can't explain the discrepancy, but in talking with 'its a rat', it sounds like the tag / vin are original.
