Does anyone know of a smaller wiper motor so i can get clearane between a tall GM performance valve cover. The ones i have now are notched so i can take the cover on and off for valve adjustment. My new combo will have rollers and a stud girdle so i will need to use tall valve covers with no mods. I like the GM performance tall covers and i have read on this site they are a bit taller than most, i do not want to run with out the wiper motor. Any help on this would be great.

Detroit Speed Eng. has a very good one but it doesn't have a washer pump. Link http://www.detroitspeed.com/productpages/indproduct/electricalprod/wiper_kit_prod.htm

Is this a big block or small block? I'm assuming big block as they're tighter. My 69 big block with tall GM cast covers cleared the stock wiper motor, but you had to remove the wiper motor to take that valve cover off. This was with the correct offset big block frame pads.

I later swapped to the DSE unit, much nicer, several speeds, and let me remove the covers without removing the wiper unit.

Mike,
I wonder if a 68 wiper motor would give you the clearance you need.

I'm pretty sure you can remove tall covers with a small block and stock wiper setup. This isn't a good pic because it's not from the drivers side, but we had the tall GM cast covers on a friends 69 with the stock wiper, and we could remove the cover without touching the wiper.

Thanks Jody, Those are the covers i am going to use. I will just have to wait and see. Did those have baffles in them and are you running a PCV valve

I've had a set of the cheapo chrome covers that would not clear the wiper motor to remove the cover. If you remove two of the bolts and lossen the other the motor can be rotated enough to get the cover off/on, it's not a big deal. I have some different tall covers on now that don't have the problem.

Edit: For future readers this is a '67 issue.

I tried the stepped baffled rubber grommets with those Moroso breathers and chrome stands, but they still dripped a bit of oil. So I made a spiralled metal piece that wound down inside the chrome stand. Very unrestricted for great breathing, yet by looking down the stand it was fully baffled to stop any splashing oil. Never leaked a drop after that. Think of an auger or post hole digger as far as shape.

I think what most of you are missing is that the 67 wiper motor is unique to that year. The hole in the firewall is round (on a 67) so a 68 (which is oval) and later motor will not fit without extensive mods to the firewall.

Also, 67 has the motor clocked at the bottom of the unit. I never had a problem with small block tall steel valve covers but I never used the tall aluminum type as depicted in camcojb's pic so I don't know about them.

I do know for a fact that with a BBC even with big block frame stands the stock valve cover is quite close to the wiper motor but can be removed if you run stock valve train.

All the 67 Camaro's with tall BBC valve covers that I've seen have been notched or the owner left off the wipers or ran something else.

Is there more clearance on the 68? I have a big block and was thinking of running roller rockers with tall valve covers. I don't mind removing the wiper motor to remove the valve cover for the rare times that's required, just don't want it to hit when it's running.

Not sure with the 67's but I know the '68 with a smallblock won't let you remove and install the Gm tall covers with a stock wiper motor. I put in small alum plates in and bolted them to my roller rockers to work as baffles instead of messing with the covers. The covers are cast and I just don't like messing with them as they are prone to weeping on their own. I drilled the filler and breatherholes with a step bit using my drill press and worked flawlessly.

With my 67 SBC and tall valve covers, i have to remove the 3 screws that hold the wiper motor to the firewall and pull it out and up out the way, dont even have to disconnect the motor from the wiper transmission. its not that big a deal. after your done put the motor back in place reinstall the 3 screws.
