96 camaro 3800 liter..

I'm driving my car on a nice sunday..
Everythings good the brauds are out ya know
So anyways.. I'm at a red light I notice my oil pressure level temp
went down and the check gauges light comes on as well.
I was like huh? Then the engine started knocking hard.
Coming from the short block
I pulled over ASAP and turned it off. I started it again and it was knocking like no tomorrow so i got it towed home. I did some research Some say Rod Bearings are worn Some say Oil pump is shot. So i played the game. I change the oil pump the old one looked bad. So I took the oil pan a few mins ago and I saw that there is no blown pistons :)
All 6 are there no broken rods.........I found the problem The rods bearings are lose I can shake shake them with my hand. Lack of clearance? I want to patch this engine back together. What will be the best Rod Bearings to get? along with the clearance size? Should I go over stock?
Please help!

Are the main and rod journals on the crankshaft damaged or scored?.....If not, then you'll need to replace ALL main and rod bearings!.....If the crankshaft is stock and never been turned then you'll need standard size main and rod bearings.....You may need to mic the journals to determine this....You can't just install any size bearings in it!.....Also, you'll need to torque down the main and rod caps according to factory specs, you can't just tighten them down any old way!.....And make sure to replace the rear main oil seal while you're at it!.....By the by, "brauds" is actually spelled broads!:thumbsup:

the Crank is not damanged or scored!
so you think I should use normal size bearings then?

If i Were you, well how many miles does it have? Just take the block in and have it reworked for peace of mind :)

I can't answer this, only you can after you mic the main and rod journals on the crankshaft!....Bear in mind, you MUST install the correct size bearings or you'll ruin the crankshaft!

the crank is STOCK 100%
The Bearings are worn but not too bad!
I got 120,212 miles on it
so i will mic the journals and see what size i need!

Good luck with your band aid fix. This better be a low hp daily driver.Anytime you knock the rod bearings out..the connecting rod big end will require resizing.Loading new shells in an out of round big end results in you know what.Kaboom.:noway:

I've been an auto mechanic for 35 years and I've never seen an engine with junk bearings saved by simply installing new bearings and not doing any machining to the crank or resizing the rods. You may be able to get a few more miles out of it but I doubt it. I'm thinking it's time for another engine, a rebuild or at least a complete new shortblock.

Well it won't hurt to try it to patch it up no?
I'll have to really baby it. Till I get more money saved up :)
hmmm what about over size bearings?
Or should i just take out the crank and get it replace?

If you can feel and see the slack in the bearings the crank is sue=rely damaged. Get a new short block and get on with your life.

Easy, Trigger, these guys are trying to help you. There is no quick fix for a rod knocking as has been stated. You can slap new bearings in it if you want, but odds are you'll be tearing back into the engine before you even get out of the driveway. If you aren't sure of what you are doing, take the short block to a reputable shop and have them check it out for you, or get another engine and hope for the best.
