View Full Version : A black panther posting at Camarosource
rlyfst1 Oct 18th, 08, 10:53 AM I'm curious about what you guys think. You need to go to the end of the postings, where there are pics of "an original" one.

Camaros-n-Chevelles Oct 18th, 08, 02:04 PM Wow, what an interesting Camaro. I never knew they were made either.
cjm465 Oct 18th, 08, 03:32 PM here is an article about them from firstgencamaro.com.

Z282NV Oct 18th, 08, 06:21 PM It took the guy over a year to post some half a$$ pictures of this car on the other forum after I quizzed him on it. Sounds a bit fishy to me. 13 years in storage and now he has to put it away again...Stay tuned for the next set of pictures coming to a forum near you October 2009.

While I agree the guy seems like a bit of a flake I seriously doubt that he built a black 67 with gold interior and hunted down the proper wheels and added the gold stripes as well just to fool a bunch of internet Camaro freaks.... Looks like a very cool car to me and one I had never heard of before and I've been messing with these things for 30 years.

wonder why no pics show the fender with the panther in the stripe
NHBandit Oct 19th, 08, 08:12 AM Geez guys, Why is it alot of you think anyone has to PROVE anything to you just because you ask for proof ? Is the guy trying to sell you the car ? From what I can see it's HIS car, he's not trying to sell it, he may not even realize it may be worth a ton of money, and he posted a few bad pics of it because he was asked for pictures. So maybe the guy isn't a great photographer and maybe he's got better things to do than to spend all his time trying to prove his car is what he says it is even though he's not offering it for sale. Why in hell is it some of you think the rest of the world owes you something just because you demand it ???
bobjs67rsss Oct 19th, 08, 09:06 AM I love the color combo. It does leave the first impression of being a bad a$$ car.

Mark,I agree with you. I was at Cruisin the Coast last week in mississippi and a couple guys are checking out my car. His buddy ask his other buddy how many camaros you have now. He said 14. Then tells me he has a COPO car too. I just look at him and say OK. I could have said prove it and tell me more about it but I just said cool. He also said he had 2 69 prostreet cars also. I also said cool. But what is the truth. I really dont care unless I see them in person. JMO

Hey Joe... let's look this guy up. If I remember correctly there are supposed to be two of the Panthers still in Canada.

It's more after posting info about how rare this car is and giving both these guys the chance to "come clean" one of them posts some pictures that still don't prove it's a real one. What I'd love to see is if the car is the real deal, more pictures and better documentation so we can all learn about an important piece of history in 1st gen Camaros. That's what he owes us if he is a true car guy.
NHBandit Oct 19th, 08, 11:52 AM I can understand that and I would also love to see a detailed description of the car complete with closeup pictures of all the little things that make it unique including the trim tag, Panther emblem, etc. My only point is that not all Camaro owners are as anal about these important details like alot of the members of this fine website and just because someone dosn't show us every little detail we ask for dosn't mean his car is a fake. If the guy was trying to fake it for whatever reason do you really think he would spend the bucks on the proper interior, unique stripes, etc and overlook the Panther emblem ? In his pics it's not missing, he simply didn't show a pic of the front bumblebee stripe. What if the car was repainted at some point and the emblem was left off ? It is after all 40 years old. Just because you don't see it dosn't mean a whole lot. I had a close friend who bought a 69 BB Camaro many years ago. It was sold to him as an SS396 project car missing the engine, nothing more. While cleaning out the junk that was piled in the trunk he found a badly pitted Motion emblem. After doing ALOT of research, making a bunch of phone calls, doing a title search through DMV and then finally paying Joel Rosen a good chunk of change he found that he did in fact have a 69 Motion Camaro. Before my buddy died he also owned a 69 Motion Corvette and a 69 L89 Camaro with Canadian docs. His son still has the Vette, the other cars are long gone to new homes.
Z282NV Oct 19th, 08, 06:09 PM I still think this all seems a bit fishy. Lets face it "67BlackPanther" never did provide any evidence and 4 post "wild_one" posted some fuzzy..night shots over a year later...If you are going to make a claim like that would you not want to back it up with some good evidence? Personally I think that would add some credibility to their posts....just like rlyfst1 said we just want to give them the "chance to come clean". There is no obligation of course but then do not go claiming you have one either.
If we get good evidence then great, we all benefit by learning more about these rare cars and where they wound up. If we don't then we are no further ahead are we.
Hey capt...about giving the guy a call...maybe.... but I think some really good pictures and documents if they have them is worth more than a 1,000 words. If the cars really exist then good for them.
blue ss Oct 20th, 08, 06:19 AM Thats no Panther , The panther was a prototype that looked alot different than a 67 Camaro.
rich pern Oct 20th, 08, 06:44 AM Two different Panthers. One was the original name of the Camaro and a concept (which is what I think you are referring to) and the other was a Canadian Motion type car. Basically a dealer modded car, and then advertised as such, kinda like Motion and Yenko.

69Z28-RS Oct 20th, 08, 11:16 AM According to the 'advertisement' posted, the 'black panther' included:
Gorries' modifications to the Camaro included heavy-duty front coils, rear leaf stiffeners, tubular shocks, 10" front disc brakes, power assist brakes and steering, 500 magnum wheels, and tubeless tires. Black Panthers came with either a 327 or 427 V-8 engine. They were fine-tuned to handle with precision and cat-like agility, and thanks to brake-balancing valves and other minor adjustments they were noticeably more drivable than the original Camaro.
Weren't all these *standard Camaro Options*???? ie. order a black camaro with the gold deluxe interior, with a few options, and install a 'special emblem' on the front fender, and VOILA! a 'Special Camaro'!~
PS. I doubted the ZL1 portion of the story! Was the ZL1 even available in 1966? I don't know of one before 1969!
rich pern Oct 20th, 08, 01:09 PM I *think* they also had a 427 and 350 engine transplant option as well....
Yes, I kinda caught that ZL1 reference as well in the thread. Kurt or someone more knowledgable than me can speak to that.

Wild_One Oct 20th, 08, 03:45 PM OMG
Wow, I never knew this would start such a controversy?? Well, in fact, I do now own my fathers car that he bought from Gorries back in late 1966....It is in fact a Black Panther, the Story that is published online is in fact correct. My father bought the first one that was on display at Gorries and drove it out of the show room.
I have nothing to really prove to anyone. I love the car, and I am now working on it again. After 13 years of being in storage, I have found myself replacing some wiring etc...I have a few other things yet to do as well.
As for getting it out of storage, Yes I took it out this year, I don't have to explain myself why so long, but if you lived where I do, you would also know that Winter is right around the corner, and they use Salt on our roads here. I will not be caught dead on the roads with Ice Snow and Salt. (Make sense hey?)
I will be working out of my garage on it over the winter and bringing it back on the road again in the spring next year.
Now, I am on a search for Red Wall Tires for it, as those is what it came with.
You are all welcome to e-mail me through here if you like, I do respond to all e-mails.
Hope you all have a Nice day!
Wild!
P.S. As for the Panther Emblem, that someone eluded to, was in fact a plastic plaque, black with Gold lettering that said Black Panther.
captcanuck68 Oct 20th, 08, 05:08 PM Hey Wild ... get a back issue in the "Old Car Mag"...and dig up the other gent (not literally!) who claims to have one in S. ON, eh?

Welcome to Team Camaro Wild_One. Yes, the whole Black Panther episode has brought some interesting comments from a few of us 1st. Gen enthusiasts. Personally however I am a non believer unless you can come up with some form of documented proof. If the car has always been in the family (your fathers) you should have some documents…right? Bills of sale, protecto plate, maybe even build sheets if the car has never been apart or fully restored. Can you help me become a believer and provide those details? Unfortunately I do not feel blessed.
John 20:29, "Jesus said to Thomas, You have believed because you have seen me: blessed are those who have not seen, and yet believe".

Z282NV Oct 20th, 08, 06:06 PM Hi Alan,
I am aware of Bob & Lorraine Simonen's Black Panther located in Sault Ste. Marie of Ontario, Canada. That one is documented. Wild_One lives in Winnipeg his Black Panther (#1) needs some work.
Wild_One Oct 20th, 08, 07:18 PM Hey Joe.....
I will try to see if my Father can find those Documents your inquiring about....After 40 years, I hope he still has them. As I want to have them with the car.
Yes, my Car still needs some work, and I know that...it is amazing what 13 years of sitting in one place can do. yikes.
I am in the midst of finding a few parts I need, and I have a line on the Red Wall Tires from Coker Tire, but I am looking for other places too.
I am a Proud Camaro Owner now, and I love my Car....Might take me awhile to finish it all but I want to get it right.
Any help, of course is greatly appreciated.
Have a Great Day!!:beers:

Zedder Oct 20th, 08, 07:50 PM I have seen pics of Wild One's car and believe it to be real. As for docs, all he has to do is contact GM Canada and he will get the Vintage docs showing Gorries as the delivering dealer. That and the color scheme is just about as good as it gets. He is also correct about the plastic Black Panther emblem. It was infact a molded "plaque" with inset letters. I've seen both gold and chrome letters. As for whether it is the first, I am not 100% sure of that as I know someone else who makes the claim and has a very early car...which still retains its original "007 console". Once again, this is easy to prove with each car's VIN.
The Black Panther package was simply a color scheme, stripe and wheel package as a base. It could be added to any model including verts, SS's, Z-28's and base coupes. Speed shop performance options and engines could also be added. I have docs on two Z-28's, a 427 conversion, an SS396, one base vert and two base coupes....

Those pictures are getting much better Wild...I am starting to come around...and those documents are not for me they are for you. Zedder is right GM Canada can help. I think they charge a very nominal fee to search your VIN for you and tell you what your car came equipped with from the factory.

Finding the bill of sale, protecto plate and any build sheets further authenticates your Camaro and makes it even more valuable and unique.
deejaygee Oct 20th, 08, 09:07 PM Is this a 350 or 427 ci car?
Wild_One Oct 20th, 08, 09:18 PM Hey Denis,

It not about jealousy for me cause frankiny I am not into original cars other then Z's.
KevinK7 Oct 21st, 08, 05:36 AM ...VERY cool car , ...and to be the car your dad drove off the dealership, ...priceless :) (your dad has good taste in cars by the way :D )
I've heard of the black panther before, ...if I can dig up the webpages I bookmarked, ...I'll post them here as well.
Your car looks amazing as is, ...you're just going to tidy it up, ...and not restore? (...looks great original...)

Black being my favorite color (wait, I'm in Canada this week, it's favourite colour), and then the black/gold theme has been a popular choice thru the years....Just check (cheque) out the Trans Am guys, black/gold rules.
Great score!!
phel69 Oct 21st, 08, 07:11 AM I wouldn't restore that car. A little cleaning yes, restore,NO!

Me too Wild, this is a unique opportunity for all of us 1st gen junkies. You really need to provide as much information as possible. As example, you said it's a 210 HP 327, there are articles that say if it is a small block it should be an L 30. This is a wonderful chance to fully document a rare car. I would do everything in my power to do so, and share every detail.

Now that picture is a great start. I've spoken to others who have info to add about Black Panthers. This would be a great opportunity to really create a data base for all to have access to.

Zedder Oct 23rd, 08, 08:05 PM Thanks Bruce...I've learned a little about the Canadian cars during the past 30 years I've been playin' with them :D
A few guys have PM'd me and asked what I know about the Black Panthers...so here it is in a nutshell. We just moved, so I can't put my hands on my magazines yet to confirm dates and names, so I am going by memory.
In 1998 I was researching the Canadian '67 Z-28's and contacted Craig Fisher who drove one in the Trans Am series. He was the first one to tell me about the Black Panther cars and I have been hunting them down ever since. Craig and his friend Terry both had '67 Z Black Panthers from Gorries. I have paperwork on both cars. I started asking everyone I met with an old Camaro at local cruise nights about them and ran ads in the local papers looking for info and cars. A number of leads put me in touch with owners, previous owners, guys who remembered them, a sales person from Gorries, and a photographer who had pics of one at Cayuga taken in 1968. One lead put me in touch with the fellow who wrote the only article that I have been able to find on them from 1967 (Canada Track and Traffic Magazine) and he remembered his interview with John Moss (may have been Jack???), the sales manager from Gorries.
I was also contacted by the editor of Canadian Classics magazine who saw my ad for a BP and called to ask me what a BP was. I explained and he later wrote an article on them asking for owner's to contact the mag. My conversation with him is where the estimate of 50 BP's comes from although he doesn't credit me by name...just mentions "some guy who ran an ad". Anyway, that article spawned the later article "In search of the Elusive Black Panther" which circulated on the Internet and introduced Bob Simonen's car to the Camaro world (I spoke with Bob also and he is a very nice guy).
Now the car...a BP was simply a black Camaro with gold interior, pinstripes, nose stripe and rocker stripes. It had Black Panther emblems on the fenders and trunk lid and could be ordered in any body style and motor/tranny combination. I have seen, heard of, and have paperwork on 210 hp and 275 hp standard coupes, converts, RS cars, RS/SS big and small blocks and the 2 '67 RS Z-28's. I know that at least one early 396 conversion and two 427 conversions also took place that I am aware of. They had 14 inch Magnum 500 wheels and could be ordered with a ton of speed shop equipment based on whatever the owner desired. Some cars got the "007" console which consisted of the standard console that had the lid removed and the guts filled with a panel that had toggle switches with Dynamo taped labels like "oil Slick" and "Smoke Screen" etc. It was put in one of the first cars as a joke, but it caught on and became part of the package for many buyers. I can tell you that at least 8 cars still exist today. Hope this helps!
xplantdad Oct 23rd, 08, 08:42 PM The above information is why I love the internet...and people like Mark. It just amazes me how little I know about this stuff. It's just fascinating.
Thanks for sharing the information Mark...and make sure you send me a video of you doing a "Bruce" in that Vette you have now...
We'll add it to the currently running Members Ride on your car...on the Yenko site:D;)

I have a copy of Canada Track and Traffic Magazine from 67 it was a good article it is only 2 pages.
I would like to know why the BP badging was removed and the noes strip was repainted to cover the black area where the badge was. Also the only way to truly confirm it as a BP would be sales documents a build sheet and dealer invoice would only prove it was delivered to Gorries. To me that would mean it was most likely a BP camaro and that would make me pretty sure it was a real BP. Wild The spec info has the car haveing tigerpaws from UniRoyal W/ 8.8X14 rims

Also the name was George Moss not john or jack and the articel in the mag is about his car that has a 427 It says inside the all black theme is continued but other colors are allowed

Hey Mud Rat...
Over the last 40 years....The badging seem to have gotten lost...(pissed me off) I am trying to find, or get remade the badging. The person that lost the Badging painted over that part of the nose to try and cover the fact up...Not much I can do about that now.....Yes the were Red Line UniRoyal Tigerpaws on the car, Only Uniroyal does not make red lines any more that I know of...Firestone is the closest I can find...:(

vincevs Oct 24th, 08, 01:49 PM Great car!
I love these cars.. mostly because they are a real Canadain COPO!
If you know the car is real don't sweat trying to find documents for everyone on this forum. Hell, if your dad bought the car and you aren't going to sell it then you have nothing to prove! And seing that, unlike all US documentation, you have access to all the old cdn records it is easy to prove. Maybe that is why there are so few fakes. Pretty hard to fake a car that can be so easilty proven to be a fraud. I want one of these!
Could you send me / post pictures of the console and unique parts of this car? We are all curious and thanks from all of the other people on this site for sharing your truely special car.
I have already have an #ed car with paperwork (originally gold with a black stripe and black interior) and if I ever build myself a big block 427 it is going to have this paint scheme (completely opposite to my current car) and in my signiture I will add...
1967 Black Panther 427 M22 (Cloned and proud of it!)

Zedder Oct 24th, 08, 04:38 PM Hey Wild, what is the build date from the trim tag?
Panther Camaro Nov 15th, 08, 07:51 PM ENDANGERED SPECIES... The Elusive 1967 Black Panther Camaro. I puchased mine new on April 7, 1967 and never thought I would still have it after 42 years with just over 50,000 original miles and the original tiger paw redline spare tire still in the trunk.I verified only one other panther as original and therefore I state that I have one of two that exist today. My information indicates that less than 50 and possibly as few as 12 Panthers were sold by Gorries Chev. Olds., in Toronto, Ontario. They produced an optional high-performance dealer enhanced Camaro in 1967 calling it the BLACK PANTHER . It was an interesting choice of a name because Panther was the name originally considered by G. M. for what became the Camaro. The dealer added optional high-performance enhancements to black 327 or 427 Camaros with gold deluxe interiors. They also added special gold stripes, BP badgesand a James Bond 007 panel featuring switches for seat ejector, machine guns smoke screen etc. The dealer package also included Deluxe Magnum 500 chrome rims with Uniroyal Redline Tires. The BLACK PANTHER Camaro is truly one of the rarest of the dealer inspired musule cars on the road today. I have been following the various posted comments and decided to provide some info that I have. I would be happy to provide some pics for this section and the special camaro section. Let me know.
captcanuck68 Nov 15th, 08, 11:46 PM Good for you for finally chiming in, Bob.
Read an article about you and your car in the Old Car mag.
Going to be up in your neck of the woods next spring... we'll have to quaff a few cold ones. Got a BIL up there in Sudbury.

Bob , welcome to the site. Your Camoro is a legend and I for one would be pleased if you could post some never seen before pictures of your car.
You have stated that you only one of two that exist today (verified)...do you have any comments on Wild_One's Panther (states that his is the first one). From the pictures he posted if that is not the other one you know about then that makes three (3) confirmed.
The Panther was also being discussed on camarosource.ca , here is the link
http://www.camarosource.ca/forums/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=13322&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&hilit=Panther&start=0
There was another person (67BlackPanther) from Courtice Ontario stating he had one too but lost all the badges...if that is true then that makes four (4) in existance.
Again, thanks for posting,
Joe

Panther Camaro Nov 18th, 08, 05:06 PM JOE,The Wild One is not the other Panther that I have verified. My car along with the other panther that I have verified, both have documentation to prove they are original BLACK PANTHER Camaros. Mine was puchased from the showroom at GORRIES on April,7 1967 and the other March 1967. With less than 50 and possibly as few as12 Black Panthers produced and a number of them heavily raced at Mossport and Cauga Racetracks in the early 60's(which I have pictures of) it would seem unlikely that many originals would be left. Over the years I have had many e-mails and phone calls from people insisting they also had Black Panther Camaros. But, other than the one that I verified the others never surfaced.
I have the paper work for my car, along with the original 67 centenial plates, spare Uniroyal Tiger Paw tire, protecto plate, manual, metal GORRIES DOWNTOWN TRUNK tag and key chains and a 1967 picture of my car the day after I returned from Toronto. In my opinion you would think that someone with an original car would at least have some of these items. I think it would be very hard to prove if you did not have the original bill of sale or the original paint and badges.
This is just my opinion for what it is worth, hope it helps.
Thanks to all the contributors for your nice comments.

Z282NV Nov 18th, 08, 07:12 PM Hi Bob,
Thank you for sharing this piece of history with us. I noticed that you joined this site about 6 years ago yet have posted very little. I hope that you will continue telling us more about your car, sharing what details you can and allowing us to become more familiar with your 67 Camaro. THANKS:thumbsup:
Kurt S Nov 18th, 08, 08:00 PM From data I've seen, Gorries didn't buy enough black 67's to support anything close to the 50 car estimate.
Panther Camaro Nov 27th, 08, 03:02 PM Hi Kurt
Does your data give a better estimate of the number of Black Panthers that Gorries might have made or or would 12 be reasonable.
Thanks for your info.
Bob
vincevs Nov 28th, 08, 07:21 AM Any pictures yet... we all want to see the "007 console"?
Kurt S Nov 28th, 08, 02:42 PM Bob,
A better guestimate would be about 20-25 1967 cars. That's a guestimate derived from incomplete data, but at least it has some basis. :)
Zedder Nov 28th, 08, 03:17 PM Don't forget the '68's... :D

From an article in a magazine from 1967 an employee from Gorries say that you could get the black panther in any color you wanted, it is in my previous post on page 4.
