deshooter Oct 18th, 08, 12:15 PM Is this worth $1500? This one is closed but there is the exact one for sale here locally that I can go see and maybe get for less is this worth it and will it hold up for our hobby?

DOUG G Oct 18th, 08, 02:13 PM $1500 for a used 5hp Black Max :noway:
If I remember right they were sold at Home Depot about 7-10 years ago, it looks like the motor has been changed, and its used. I'd have to pass and but a Campbell Hausfeld New for that kind of cake.
My CH is over 10 years old.
prostreet69camaro Oct 18th, 08, 02:18 PM You can find better air compressor for 1500.00. Try Ingersoll Rand from Northern Tools.
GMJoe Oct 18th, 08, 03:04 PM Thats not a good price at all, run Forest run......
Look for at least a 7 horse model and check out the CFM @ 90lbs, get as much as you can afford , you wont regret it.
Sauron67MM Oct 18th, 08, 03:32 PM This subject arises often. I am not suggesting the product in the link below exclusively, as there are other companies. I am using them as an example for comparison. Athough I bought one and so did a friend. A Baldor motor is a good motor. A two stage pump is your best choice as well. It's more efficient and cheaper to run. The name on the tank of the manufacturer you choose is not as important as the components on top of it. For examlpe: Ingersal Rand has some low-budget, low quality models in their line-up. And they have good ones. A small pump and motor on a big tank look appealing but is window dressing. They cannot keep up and they do not last. Everyone has a budget and that is understood but when you step up to the next level in compressors it is worth the extra green. You can always sell it if you're only banging out one car before you die. Selling a good used product is easier than selling a piece of junk.

stope4 Oct 19th, 08, 07:23 AM Sauron67, which one did you buy?
deshooter Oct 19th, 08, 09:10 AM I looked at this one yesterday and liked it. I can pick it up at the local store for $969.00 plus tax. Here is the link to it. What do you think. It is the most cost effective two stage I have found. It is made by devilbiss.

HarleyD67 Oct 19th, 08, 09:31 AM Double check the pump and make sure it's cast iron. In the picture it looks like an aluminum pump. Allot of places will advertise cast iron pumps as long as it has cast sleeves in it.
1969ss Oct 19th, 08, 09:53 AM It looks like the same compressor I have http://www.1969supersport.com/paintroom21.html
I paid about $800 new three years ago. A lot of compressors use this type pump, they will put out all the air you need, even run a 100 lb sandblaster pot.
But, there what I call a disposable compressor, this is my third one. First one lasted 10 years, two on the next one and this one is about three years old.
I know I'm a slow learner and should have bought a better one to start with.
As far as one name brand being better then the next, thats debatable, but you'll need to spend $1300 or $1400 to get a good one, cast iron pump.
If its under $1300 I would be cautious.

deshooter Oct 19th, 08, 09:59 AM I know I thought the same thing when I saw their computer pic. The one they have there wrapped in plastic on a pallet says cast iron right on the side of it and it is black unlike the pics. It also has devilbiss customer service numbers all over. Maybe they were aluminum when Porter Cable was still making them I dunno.

1969ss Oct 19th, 08, 10:07 AM Something like this one, continuous run, it will get it done and hang in there. http://www.eatoncompressor.com/catalog/item/504747/206953.htm
A five year warranty and low rpm running, thats what you want.

prostreet69camaro Oct 20th, 08, 01:41 PM That Eaton compressor does look nice.
deshooter Oct 28th, 08, 07:09 PM Keep an eye on your compressor i bought the 6hp 80 gallon one i asked about above. I got it home plumbed it in and used it for about an hour with a da sanding my car. Blue and green flames shot out of the electric motor and it burst into flames. Got new motor today it looked like it had been dropped had to fix wires. Now it is squealing like a pig and sounds like it is blowing up. I am looking for a replacement because i am fairly certain this on is going back!
