View Full Version : Can you verify my torque converter selection?
PA Camaro Guy Oct 18th, 08, 04:37 PM I'm about to match my TH350 to my 383 stroker (405HP, 440 TQ). I intend for it to be a street car. I'm looking at a B&M converter rated at 2400-2500 Stall. Or a TCI model that isn't advertised with a stall speed, they just call it "Breakaway" and advertise 1,000 RPM more than stock. Both B&M and TCI have converters in the 3,000-3500 stall range but I don't think these are suited to my set up but let me know if you disagree.
I know one of the big mistakes most people make is going to aggressive on these things and actually ruining performance. I also know that selecting converters is complicated and more related to torque, tire height, and rear gears. My rear gears are stock, and my tires are normal street tires.
Thanks guys.
DOUG G Oct 18th, 08, 04:59 PM Cam selection, tranny, and rear gears will help make the call on a converter.
Badbird Oct 18th, 08, 05:40 PM I believe the stall speed on a TH350 is around 1500, this is with the stock 12" torque converter.....In order to determine the correct converter to use, we need your cam specs and gear ratio however you can't go wrong with a nice 10", 3000 stall converter!
PA Camaro Guy Oct 18th, 08, 10:47 PM Cam is .487inch/.508inch and 234 degrees/244 degrees. Real axel is an unknown (sorry- went so far as to try to find the stamp...screw it)
DOUG G Oct 19th, 08, 09:57 AM 2200-2500 will be fine. I was running a 2200 with a 230 @ .050 cam... you could drive anywhere and not turn 3000rpm @ 30mph :D (seems my 10" 3000 likes to though :clonk:)
2200-2500 I think you'll like, peppy but very livable on the street/hiway.
Pro-Street69Camaro468 Oct 19th, 08, 05:53 PM When I had mine rebuilt the fella asked me the weight of car,HP,gears, tire hight, and cam specs.
PA Camaro Guy Oct 20th, 08, 08:27 AM Can anyone easily explain what the cam has to do with it? I can see how the cam would be involved in what "kind" of spin the crank is throwing out through the flywheel...
Thanks Doug G. From what I've been reading this seems about right.
DOUG G Oct 20th, 08, 08:44 AM The cam is the brain. Determines how/what the motor will do.
If you took a 383 with a 220 @ .050 cam Vs. same motor with a 250 @ .050 cam they would require totally different converters.
Overlap,duration,gears,tire size,car weight,and use all play a part in what you'll need.
