I have been out of the muscle car world for over 20 years due to a professioal drag boat racing career, so I need some help on this one? I just jumped on a 1970 Camaro (Z28), I didn't have alot of time to research the Z28 part so I'm a little worried.
It does have the brackets on the rear frame rail for the sway bar... is that a clue?
It has a 8K tach with 6.5K redline...
No a/c...
The vin indicates a V8 car
Floor mounted gas pedel?? Somebody told me that only the Z's had the floor mounted gas pedals... do all 70 Camaros have floor mounted gas pedals?
5-leaf springs in the back...
Has all factory z28 wheels...
Has all z28 emblems in right places...

The front springs are suposed to be heavy duty... how can I tell?
Is there something with the body tag or vin that can help?
Its an automatic car but the original trans, motor, and 12-bolt are gone... all auto 70 z28's had 400 trannys right?... if so, would there be signs of the electric kick down in the harness somewhere??

I know that almost everything could have been added, but there are two things that stand out to me... the sway bar brackets on the rear frame rails are factory installed without a doubt. The floor mounted gas pedal is also a "no doubt" factory install, but I don't know about the gas pedal theory? The tach appears that it has never been messed with but no way to be 100% sure? How can I be sure? Is there a serial number listing somewhere that GM put out identifying things like this? Please Help...
Thanks!

I take it that the car does not have the original motor. 2 BIG clues are the floor mounted Gas pedal and Aluminum Stoppers on the Lower Front control Arms - ONLY the 70 Z28 had these features. Other models could be ordered with the F41 suspension and U14 Instrument Cluster. All 70 Z28's came with the aforementioned options plus the U14 Instrument Cluster had a Z28 Specific 6500 rpm read lined 8000rpm faced Tach. The rear end was a 12 Bolt with 3.73 Posi or very rare 4.10 option. Again, the F41 Suspension and U14 Cluster were not Z28 Specific but the Tach was. The Cowl tag should read something like 28.10 which means a Z28 with white stripes. The VIN # will not tell you whether the car is a Z28. I don't believe the info on the Cowl Plate said Z28.10 until 71. It was not until 72 that the Vin# indicated whether the car was a Z28. 70 and 71 Z28's did not have air conditioning because of the solid FT cam. The Cowl Plate is very important.
