View Full Version : Best bang for the buck stroker kit?
batboy Oct 19th, 08, 08:46 PM I was given a rusty 454 block (discussed in another thread). I won't know if it's rebuildable until I drop it off at the machine shop. If it's salvageable, I'm trying to decide how to build it. A stroker kit naturally comes to mind.
I'd love to build a forged 496 CID with a 4.25" crank and 6.385" rods if possible. Haven't decided whether to go flat top forged pistons or domed. Pump gas around here is crappy, so might go flat.
Don't want to cheap out, but don't want to spend a lot either. What's a good "bang for the buck" stroker kit? I've heard great things about Callies cranks. What about Scat or Eagle kits, yea or nay?
I've looked at these websites: Flatlander Racing, Speed-O-Motive, and RPM Machine. Would love some additional input to help me day dream about building it.
ToyzRMe Oct 19th, 08, 11:03 PM I buy alot of parts from Flatlander Racing. They're decent to deal with, and their prices are excellent.
I have a Scat 489 kit here right now with cast crank, Scat Pro Mod I-beam rods (I like these for the price), and SRP small dome pistons.
I also have a couple more sets of the Scat Pro Mod I-beam rods here (both 6.135 and 6.385) for other projects. These are my favorite econo-priced rods. I've used them often. Touch up the big end, check the pin hole, good to go.
The stuff is pretty nice, as always. I always check all the dimensions and touch up the balance of anything I use.
Don't be afraid of a cast BB crank in a moderate horsepower situation. They're quite robust by design, and will take alot of abuse.

3pedals Oct 19th, 08, 11:52 PM I used Ohio crank for the rotating assembly of the 496 I built. I am happy with the price and service/quality parts I received.
wiskeesour Oct 19th, 08, 11:57 PM If you have any friends that race circle track, ask them. They usually have good deals on parts.
batboy Oct 20th, 08, 07:17 AM Toyz, I hear ya about the cast crank. For mostly street cruising which is what I'll be doing, that's fine. But, if I'm gonna bite da bullet and get a stroker kit, I wanna get all forged. Never know, I might end up doing a little racing.
3pedals, thanks for the Ohio Crankshaft heads up. They have good prices that even my wife could love.
Harley, the only racers I personally know are drag racers. People around here with big blocks like to hang onto their chit.

batboy Oct 20th, 08, 11:59 AM Cool, I added www.competitionproducts.com (http://www.competitionproducts.com/) to my bookmarks.
For those that have used a 4.25" stroker crank in a production 454 block, how were counterbalance and rod clearances? Can you use a standard oil pan? Most reference say the 4.25" crank and 6.385" rods are a bolt-in, but every once in a while someone will claim a little grinding "might" be needed.
speedfreek Oct 20th, 08, 06:12 PM Scat's quality is better than Eagle. I am going to order a forged 4.25 crank kit with their h-beam rods. http://www.scatcrankshafts.com/
CMQuickcoupe Oct 20th, 08, 09:06 PM I did automotive machine work for 9 yrs and we were an eagle dealer and I used tons of there kits and never had any kind of problem with any of them.I go to the track very regularly and see everyone I used to do work and many of the motors I did are still running strong, several SBF which I used to run and a few BBC 468,496 and the biggest I did is a 572 in a 81 short wide chevy that has bested a 5.69 in th 1/8 on 300 shot so far with a 1.21 60ft,truck still weighs almost 3600lbs with driver.I have also used scat products with good results so I think either is a good choice. When I get to the engine for my 67 after I get the backhalf done I will be using a forged eagle stroker kit with a procharger.
Casey Kilfoyle Oct 20th, 08, 09:14 PM Check out www.dyno-flo.com. I've bought a couple of rotating assemblies from them at dirt cheap pricing. They carry Eagle, Callies, Oliver, and many other brands. I bought a set of Oliver rods (BBC) for $1000 recently from them, all other sites they were $1300. I would check them out for sure if I was shopping. Their website is kind of limited, but the phone works best.
Casey Kilfoyle Oct 20th, 08, 09:18 PM I have heard that Eagle and Scat cranks are forged in the same foundry, but Scat parts are finish machined in the U.S. by Scat. I don't know if this is true or not, just something I've heard. By the way I have an Eagle crank and rods in my motor with no problems. 730HP 496 with a 300 shot.
