Installed the street saginaw 4 speed from M&R racing this morning. I have 1st thru 4th gears. I installed the linkage the same way it was installed on the old saginaw transmission. I can pop it into reverse from under the car and start it up and it works. When I'm in the car it feels like the its hitting something. I found nuetral and put the 1/4 inch rod and did the linkage. Am I doing something wrong or am I missing something? It is a Hurst Competition shifter. It worked fine in reverse before.

The new trans may have a shorter throw fork inside for reverse than the earlier trans.
You may have to make an extension for the trans in order to get it into reverse.
Try again with reverse, linkage unhooked and shifter in reverse, fully. Take a look at the difference in length needed for the shifter rod to slide into the trans arm hole.
If the rod length is lengthen, then the shifter will be binding in the neutral gate to get to reverse.

Your shifter should be installed like this:

The later Saginaw transmissions had a back-up light switch boss cast into the side cover that interfers with the Hurst reverse linkage. If you have one of these you will need to replace it with an earlier side cover like the one in the picture.

It is not binding on anything on the cover because I can pop it into reverse by hand. Going over to have my dad help me with this. So I can be under the car and see where or what its binding on. Thanks for the input . Looks to me that the 2nd linkage on the picture is not in nuetral, shouldn't it be straight up?

Okay. I took off the linkage and popped the transmission in reverse. I tried putting the shifter and reverse and to no avail. It seems it is binding inside the shifter. What do I do now? Rebuild kit?

Did you use the alignment pin to align all three shift gates?

Yes i used a 1/4 inch rod to align the shifter and tighten the rod accordingly. The shifter will go to the left, but not forward into reverse.

While pulling left on the shifter, either go forward, backward, or lighten up on pulling left.
You may be overshooting the shifter reverse position, or stop bolt may be adjusted too much.

My shifter is a hurst competition without the stop bolt in the back. The only bolts are the ones connecting it to the trans and one beer.
