Does anyone else out there have issues with these retro-hydraulic roller lifters? I have one that is ticking as if it weren't properly adjusted and though I have readjusted them several times with no change. This week while I was on a long ride at highway speeds it was quiet when i came to a stop and idle. But would start getting noisey if idling any length of time, so it is bleeding down, but is this a problem or should I buy a new one and replace it? It's the same one and the others are quiet. The motor runs great otherwise. I find it annoying when I am idling into a show or cruise. Thanks for any insight and help.

Yes.....similar situation on my last 454 rebuild with new Comp 816 hyd lifters. (not rollers) Ticked like a chinese pea thrasher. Over a 6 month period I adjusted those rockers every method known to man. Every time they would start out quiet and after 10 minutes they were ticking again.....ALL 16. If you can identify the ONE, just replace that one...if not....replace all with a set of GM or Johnson lifters.

I bought a set of Johnson lifters.......nice and quiet since then.

Chet,
I haven't seen any problems, but any lifter can do that if it gets a bit of dirt in it. You could pull it and try to disassemble it and clean it real good, but for the amount of work involved, you would probably be safer just replacing it. If you have the time, Comp would probably replace it if you sent it to them.

I have the 853 roller lifter, first on a cast roller and now on a billet. I have probably 7500 miles on them from 3 years worth of cruising. No issues and I always adjust them after warmed up by the one up/one down , ¼ turn after push rod no spin method. Always has worked for me. I am running 155# closed spring pressure on roller tip magnums.

Like Bill said, could be trash in lifter causing leak down. Easy to clean, pay attention to how you take it apart. Make sure everything is clean . Hands, tools, bench, etc.
