After unpacking my new crate motor I found these funny looking blotches on each side of the block. Anybody know what these are or seen anything like it? GM isn't even sure, they think it might be quality control but not sure. All help or ideas appreciated, don't want to install this thing and find out something is wrong. Thank you

it's a 350 small block-9.1 compression ratio,flat tappet cam-330 hp.
anybody know what these were actually for? g.m. says they pull every 20 engines or so for quality control testing and that could be why they are marked-just found them to be interesting and wondered?

thats makes sense. You have to remove paint to do an NDI check on the metal.
NDI= Non-Destructive Inspection. They have a machine that x-rays the metal looking for cranks. Its called something else in the automotive world. In the Aviation world its NDI.

that does make sense but why would they put something that looks like body filler (at least thats what it looks like in the pic, may just be sanded and primed) on if they remove the paint? Is it to fill the low spot and make it flush so when you paint it there won't be a noticeable change in height, like if paint flakes off and you just re paint that area, it will look less high. If that makes any sense.
I would still expect them to put black paint over that stuff...
