Ok so I can't figure out what this firewall marking is... From what I have read most firewall markings were UNDER the black firewall paint but I can see this quite clearly so it looks like it must be OVER it or else due age is showing THROUGH.

I am quite sure that this marking is original because the car has a repaint from the 80's (not including the firewall) and that is about all that has ever been done. It was the original owner until 2005 and I have reciepts for almost everything. It also looks like a few spots in the engine bay were hit with black spray paint to kill some of the overspray that is what might be over the marking...

Looks like "539"; any idea what it is for?

Probably the unit # for the day.

It was written on the shell, front end [usually on the inside of the lower grille panel] and frame to ensure all the sub-assemblies were properly mated.

Thanks... I tried to add the picture on my profile but I think it is too large.

I'll try to add a few more pictures (with the top down) when I get a chance.

UPDATE:
I've got a lot of work to do but the motor is stong and the interior is MINT with no rust in the floors etc. so the project will not too big (knock on wood). I can't wait to get her back to Gold with the correct striping, emblems, blacked out rockers and fender trim. I have all the parts, I just need finalize things with good body shop. Probably next winter... I might tackle the rs headlamp doors and a new soft top this winter as the one in the picture is the original.

Anyway, here is a link to a picture:

It probably was under the paint till the paint let go of the crayon writing. And there is probably more all the way across the firewall.

back in the day when i used to work in the body shop at Tarrytown the firewall on the car was one of the first Assembly job on the line. the firewall was marked with the last 3 digits of the Vin on the body build sheet. when it got to 999 it went back to 001. we made about 500 cars a night or 1 per minute(480 mininuts in 8 hours). it sucked because you would start "counting cars" waiting for your shift to end which made the night go that much longer it seemed. all bodys were throughly dipped in cleaner before the primer tank. a negative primer and a positive car body. all chalk marks were gone in the cleaning process because the paint might not stick. the paint shop Foreman would get really pissed off for writing on the cars (circling dents and missed welds etc that was the inspectors job and they punched a ticket with the deficiency on it) and you could get written up for such a thing. thats me in the cut off flanel. http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh155/stinsonz/PictureorVideo005-1.jpg

Well, I'm glad it is on mine... I don't see anyother markings. Might find something during restoration but I won't hold my breath.

My JL8 car had the sequence number from the broadcast sheet written on the firewall driver's side hidden behind the fender. When I took the fender off it was clear as can be. Then I looked at the broadcast sheet and the number matched!

No vacuum, just well maintained. I also have those sequence numbers on the firewall behind the driver's side fender.

That looks like the NOR number. Mine was a 3 digit sequence number from the broadcast sheet. I think my firewall also had the color code written on the firewall if I remember correctly.

I found marking of partial numbers behind my suitcase but since I was not taking off the passenger side fender I wont know the whole sequence till another day. My VIN is 505859 so who knows.

This does look remarkably similar doesn't it. Now if only I had the build sheet to add to my paperwork. I have not dropped the gas tank but I'm quite sure that it won't be there (NOR). I have checked everywhere else... and I don't really want confirm that it is NOT in the car.
