Just a shot in the dark that the new owner of my old Z/28 is a member here. It was sold the last time by a used car dealer who specializes in muscle cars in Northwood NH a couple years or so ago. Cortez silver with black stripes, cowl hood with all the correct parts, original trans & rear but not number matching DZ 302 engine. Can't seem to find any old paperwork with the VIN but I believe it was an 04C built car and was X77 code with black standard interior. 50+ k miles original. Originally a vinyl roof car but that had been removed. Has rosewood dash trim & speedwarning. If you are the new owner or know the new owner I have a huge photo album I'd be glad to copy with every step of the restoration I did over a 20 year period. When I bought the car in the early 80s it had a set of 1973 NH plates on it and showed 52k miles. I spent over 20 years restoring it and collecting parts so I can verify that the mileage is correct. I believe the dealer who sold it may have tried to represent it as having the original engine and it's not. Just be nice to know whatever happened to that car. http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg163/nhbandit/m_8c73ab56f0cf2a42c4358af5e13d818d.jpg

The car went to Manchester after Northwood where I looked at it . The block was a May date DZ. I offered $30,000 for it but i believe it went to Washington state for $32,500.

The car went to Manchester after Northwood where I looked at it . The block was a May date DZ. I offered $30,000 for it but i believe it went to Washington state for $32,500. Thanks. Yep, wrong block. I bought the bare block at the Amherst car flea market 20+ years ago for $400. The original engine was long gone when I got the car. I told the guy in Northwood it wasn't the original engine because he was advertising that it was all matching numbers. He insisted that because it had the DZ code and no VIN it was. I told him to check the VIN by the oil filter and he told me Chevy never put it there........ Prices have changed a bit since the old days. I bought the car from Skookie Johnson (original owner of Johnsons Performance in Concord) back in the early 80s. No engine but the original Muncie was in the trunk and everything else was there. Rusty 1/4s and the drivers side front floor pan needed replacement. Paid Skookie $1800 delivered. Ordered new GM quarter panels from Banks Chevrolet and they cost me $175 each with my discount (I had my own shop at the time). For future reference if the new owner sees this, the original owner according to NH DMV was a guy named John Yox, last known residence somewhere in NY. That was all I could find doing a title search.

I am in Shock after reading this thread... I am the Washington State Recipiant of this 1969 VIN 19N628737, X77 Cortez, M-22, Speed Warning, HOUNDSTOOTH, AM/FM, Rear Defrost, Remote Mirror,ect... and so on.

Increadible to have had had an email this morning from fiveforty(Leo) asking if I had this Z Car. Would like to get in touch by phone w/ NH Bandit and learn to be more of an active participant other than a "Lurker" on this site. I will contact him somehow early ths week. Thanks again Leo for gettin' me all charged up on my Car.

BTW, The Car sits in a heated shop in AS-IS Condition as the last time you saw it in that NH Showroom.(has a scrape on the pass door from the transport Company...DOH !!) I have not decided on how to approach this one yet. I want to get all Docs and history as possible... even will try to track down John Yox to find out WHAT DEALERSHIP SOLD THIS CAR ??? If I can find out the dealership I may be able to get Shipping docs... sales docs or anything...

:hurray: On Cloud 9,
Cheers !!

Agreed that the internet is an amazing place. When I was first doing this car I think the Classic Industries catalog was 12 pages and they didn't have a website and they were about the only game in town. On a better note though LOTS of new parts were still available from GM. The quarter panels on that car, for example, were bought new from my local Chevy dealership for $175 each and they had them in stock. Very glad to hear the car went to a good home. It was a labor of love that took slightly over 20 years. Glad to have found you Brett and please be good to my baby. That car will always be at the top of my list of cars I should have kept. Here's a couple of "before" pics. Check out the fancy 2x4 chassis jig.... http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg163/nhbandit/002-1.jpg

Here's an email copy I just sent to NHBandit. Things are definitely heating up with the positive ID of this cars original Block sitting in an 01C Z/28-RS out in Indiana... Will be calling NHBandit on Monday. I am still in shock on how all of this just started to heat up out of the blue on this Team Camaro website... Car history and the VIN block on the same day ???? Too much for me to take hold of.

Hi there Mark,
Thanks for responding. What a fantastic Car. Yes... the chrome braces are their ( I removed the battery side when I pulled the battery out) good thing I have the right braces. The Car had the right Fan, Upper and lower pulleys on it when I got it. Did you check the Camaro.net thread yet? I posted on it today... I thought it was pretty cool how info. 10 years ago was needle in a haystack and now w/ technology... its instant and world wide...

Yes... this is your old Z/28 Car. It did have the Houndstooth in it right? Woodgrain accents, Vary Rare Speed Warn, Rear defrost, Vin Matching M-22, AM-FM, Remote mirror ect... 04C from that NH MuscleCar dealer.

The Car is a Vinyl top Car w/ out the Vinyl on it and has about 52,800'ish miles on the odometer. It has a Black grill (even though it should be Silver) and a NON-Matching V0602DZ (had the 1111480 dist dated 8 j 2) 302 in it.

Were the delco shocks the gold pleasurizer type that were 1968 dated? I also got the 4053 DZ carb in the truck that was service replacement dated.

So... I have had this Car for about 3 or 4 years now. I have not touched it. I started a search for the VIN Matching block. You said in the last email that the origional owner you bought the car from told you the original block was trashed... Through this search effort I have had 3 positive hits... 1 was a mile off. On a few days ago was indeed a V0331DZ but SEVEN units from this one(Thanks Ricky). This morning... I was contacted by a very large collector that has been searching for his RS-Z/28's engine for 20 years. He advertised the engine in his in the early 1990's in all the major collector publications looking for his block and citing he has the 19N628737 DZ block that is in his Car still today. He said he picked it up in Illinois(or Indiana... more info. to follow) in the mid 80's (trying to remember everything... this day has been a DZ Whooper....) It was a complete shortblock that had evidence of Cylinder Head trauma...

I can type for hours... would really like to chat by phone.

Brett

BTW,
Will be uploading Pics to Face book so I can get them posted on this tread. Will post old pics, Tag pics and new pics that I do. Is there a quick and easy way to post pics other than using a facebook or???

photobucket has always seemed to work for me. Just make the resolution of the picture to large or medium when uploading them and then just copy the IMG from there. Amazing story. This is much cooler than having the Protect-o-Plate and getting ahold of the first owner!!! My own piece of history on my car!!!! Nice Z!!!!!!

Brett, the pics are good but as per our site policy, please resize them to around 880x660 so that folks dont have to scroll side to side and up and down to view the whole photo, and it helps alot of members who are still on dial up modems, large photos are killers for them. I'm putting feelers out today to see if the Original Owner John Yox is still "Upright." I need to know where/what dealership this car was sold at. I have also paid the .95 cents to INTELLIOUS for all J Yox's in the Country. I had 59 hits and started deductive reasoning for a firing order for the phone calls. I called about 8 Yox's in the greater North Eastern area and no answers... but left detailed messages on who I am and why I was calling and searching for Jon (John) Yox. I will keep goin' until I contact any and every YOX w/ a phone !!

Will keep @ it. Will be calling NHBandit tonight to go over more details and try to get that racers info. Cookie, who appears to be the 2nd owner @ this time.

Thanks to all for the help so far... this is gettin' fun.

Why I feel like Jack Bauer in 24,

Woke up Sunday morning @ 8:am (Seattle Time) just to face the fact that the # 2 potential VIN Match V0331DZ was not my cars... it was 19N628730 not 19N628737. I tried to reason w/ myself that the 0 really could be a 7... but it just isn't. Needless to say I was very disappointed.
Looked @ my 20 items for sale on EBAY to answer questions on a ton of DZ/LT1 Camaro stuff I had listed. I came across a questions that stated,
Dear tuxtostes,

Greetings i have vin 19628737 #618 casting assy date V0331DZ BUILT ON A MONDAY, 1969 short block std bore very nice if you can
use it i wail take out of my 01C RS Z28

-martha2626

Of course this blew me out of the chair because @ the same time, "Fiveforty" sends me an email asking me if I owned this NH Silver Z/28 and added the Team Camaro to link that NHbandit started to look for his old Car. Martha2626 w/ the VIN Match DZ engine left his contact info. and I called ASAP. Greg is fantastic individual and swears he has my shortblock 628737 in his 01C RS-Z/28. Will be validating the block soon after he gets back from Barrett. Funny thing is, Greg, has been trying to find the owner of his V0331DZ 19N628737 for over 25 years or so. He had the VIN posted in collector mags on the East Coast in the early 90's along w/ some other extreme Camaro VIN match hardware looking for their original engine compartments... Greg will assist me w/ the complete history on how he ended up w/ the block and I will share as I collect it. Greg saw my dribble on the ebay add for the V0407DZ VIN19L529500 block. I posted a line searching for my VIN block in this add !!! NHbandit (Mark) states that a Machine shop told the Original owner (?) that the original block was trashed... more to follow.

11:30am emailed back and forth w/ NHbandit and gathered info..Noon thru 6:pm, after letting the blood pressure settle, started posting on this post where things were at and did more research.
Pinched myself several times thru the night to ensure this was not a Dream...
Today, Monday morning 7:am.started the search for John Yox.

3:pm My apologoes if your last name is Yox on the Eastern seaboard... you may have already recieved or may get a phone call from me lookin' for John...
This is why I feel like Jack in 24... This has been INFO overload on the possitive end for me over this last day.

I'm havin' a ton of fun as this thing unfolds. Thanks again to the Peeps who have chimed in. I will share the info as I collect it because I do know this stuff is fun for all to take part in or read about. Any of you out there who know more info. on this Silver 69 X77 Z, please chime in. Definitely keep us up to date on how this goes. Very intriguing story that unfolded here before my eyes. Much better than my dead end of just finding out my original owner traded it in with less than 40,000 miles, and just a plain jane camaro. A lot of neat and interesting stories are out there. Congrats on the positive information overload!!!!

Everett "Skookie" Johnson passed away quite a few years ago. Johnsons Performance is still alive & well but owned by Greg Larosa who would have no knowlege of this car. Skookie was a close friend. He never drove the car. He bought it just as I bought it with 52k miles and no engine and when he was diagnosed with a severe case of diabetes he sold me the car. He hadn't owned it very long at all at the time and he never told me who he bought it from. In fact when he sold it to me he had no trunk key and had never bothered to open it. When I got the car home & went through the back seat to open the trunk I found the matching number trans and the console with guages... I spent slightly over 20 years collecting parts and restoring the car and sold it with the interior still needing to be redone and no exhaust on it other than the headers that are on it now so yes, the mileage is correct. The guy who bought it from me (David Colby) finished the car, drove it 4k miles only on nice days and then sold it to the dealer in Northwood NH. David has also since passed away. Killed in a car accident while driving a Monte Carlo SS Pace car he bought from NHIS. I may still have the 1973 NH plates that were on it when I bought it. Thanks for taking such good care of my baby. It's great to see it went to a good home.

Here are a couple of pics taken the day I brought the car home in 1982 or so. I believe the paint on the rear body & the black stripes to be original paint from what we found when stripping the old paint. To the best of my knowlege the car always had a rear spoiler but the cowl induction hood was added by me when I restored it. I had to buy the correct throttle arm & all the other cowl induction parts. Of course at the time it was a simple matter of calling my local Chevy dealer and ordering them. Please excuse the photo quality. I'm taking pictures with a digital camera of old photos in my album. the actual pictures are much clearer. The rear stripes end where they do at the front part of the trunklid in these pics because it was originally a vinyl roof car. http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg163/nhbandit/005.jpg

Hey Brett that is my favorite car of all time. I hope you get the motor. That would be too good to be true.

Mark great job in starting the ball rolling to unite the 2 long lost twins.

Brett I am not sure how much you paid for the car when you bought it, but I think you might just make bank if you can get the motor for a decent price? I just hope that you don't get stuck having to pay too much for it given the situation, but with that said I guess it makes sense at any price provided you can afford it. Numbers matching 69 Z's in the condition yours looks to be in, will make yours one special car. Great bragging rights too, to a great reuniting story. Sorry if I missed is it but is it an original code 69 paint car?

PS would love to see more pics. Hell I'd drive there just to have a look!

So she was a flat hood Car? Looks like the nose was a "take off" of a rally green Car. Is that an endura bumper in pics? Was the car born w/ all these rare options... Speed Warn... Remote Mirror... ect...? You do know that the M-22 in it is a VIN match right? The Houndstooth is still near flawless and as you saw in the pics the mileage is now @ 58K.

Thanks,
Brett Brett sorry I keep missing your calls. I've been negotiating a deal for a 57 Bel Air for the wife and we just got home from finalizing the details and the car is officially hers. She's been wanting one since she was a teenager since she's a 57 model herself. I'll be home tomorrow night for sure. The options are all original to the best of my knowlege. The interior has been completely redone but the old ratty drivers side door panel did have the bezel for the remote mirror. The speed warning is original as is the M22 (which I completely rebuilt using all GM parts). The houndstooth seats were recovered but it had ratty houndstooth seats in it when I bought it and it has the code for black houndstooth on the trim tag. When I got the car I was amazed myself at all the rare options it came with since alot of Z/28s were ordered for racing and were bare bones cars. I'm assuming the car was a flat hood car originally simply because it had the regular throttle lever and none of the wiring or relay for the cowl setup. I added all that but all the parts are genuine GM parts. Most original Z/28s came with the flat hood from the factory. I have no idea about the green nose & doors. They were on the car when I bought it and I assume from the condition of the rest of the body that someone before me had started to fix it. The original panels were pretty beat up and the green parts were mint. Hope this helps.

Everything helps Mark. Will get in touch soon when you get grounded. Would also like to find a way to get copies of your photo album for this Car.

Over the last few Days I contacted most all people in the North East w/ the last name of "Yox" only to come up empty on the John Yox search. I learned that the Yox family tree is somewhat very friendly minus 1...
Since you got the car for Skookie Johnson in the early 70's... I think there might be a chance that it was originally sold in the greater New Hampshire area. My next phase will be trying to locate and contact all the Chevy Dealerships in this area to try and pin down the dealership. Though I have never done it... I hear that Most all would be able to obtain copies of the original Shipping invoice from Chevy and possible that they may have sales records. It's definitely worth it to me to continue on w/ the history search for this car.

Help Needed,
If any folks are in are located around the Greater NH, MA, NY, CT, RI or VT areas, please assist me w/ location and info for Chevrolet Dealerships if you have the time.
If you work @ one... the Car History I seek is for the 1969 Camaro X77 Z/28 Cortez Silver heavily opted VIN 19N628737. If there is a professional sleuth that Peeps on this thread know of or have used before for a search like this w/ success, please forward the info.... no, I have not checked Canadian.... yet.

Thanks for the input keypilot,
I do plan to bench race the history of this Car on this thread unless Team Camaro deems it inappropriate or tells me this Cars 15 mins of fame has expired....?

This story is not that great TIME CAPSULE field find Van Nuys car in Oregon... but it is somewhat unique and I do hope Peeps chime in and or assist if willing.

When Greg from Indiana returns from Barrett, I plan on posting (or having him post direct) the History and story behind the V0331DZ VIN 19N628737 that ended up in his 01C 1969 Z/28-RS. I have talked to Greg on the phone 2 times since Sunday and the story is quite unique and fantastic from my vantage point. Mark/NHbandit (Previous owner and the one who spent 20 years restoring this Car) has been very helpful thru this post and seems ready to assist w/ this information journey.

The Historical Validity (the great Question of REAL vs. Not Real in these times) of this Car has become very interesting to a few out there and very important to me. As I collect history and get the Original shortblock back (I have already made the deal w/ Indiana/Greg)... I will continue sharing info. and pictures. I will also get all of the expert opinion and suggestions for "Re-Freshening" this Car. This Car has rolled 4000 miles since 1973?

Within' the next few months I will be removing the V0602DZ (memory) that Mark/NHbandit put in her in the mid 80's (or so) and getting the actual VIN # and searching for the Z/28 Car that it belongs to.

Cheers,

What a great story to follow... :hurray: There is nothing wrong with us "57 models". The 69 Camaro has always had my attention, since in junior high and up. There was also a high spoiler super bird, the guy at local gas station had and he had the camel non filters rolled up in his white t shirt sleeve.
Wish someone would hunt me down with info on mine. As far back I can go on my car, it sat at garage in Rochelle IL for a long time, back in 78, as a rust bucket no one wanted to put any money in. Congrats on expanding your known history of the car :beers:

To clarify a couple of things. I bought the car from "Skookie" Johnson in the early 80s. I'll try to pinpoint a closer date if I can locate any of the paperwork from when I bought it. He bought the car from persons unknown shortly before selling it to me (still early 80s) When I did a search through NH DMV records on the license plate that was on the car when I bought it they came up with John Yox as being the last person to register it in 1973 I believe (I'll look for the plate) The plate number at that time was GB6899. The story Skookie told me was that the engine was blown up in 1973 with 52k miles on it and the car was parked for several years until he bought it. How many owners it went through during that "rest" is unknown. It may have been in the possesion of John Yox the whole time. Unfortunately since Skookie is gone it's still a mystery who he actually bought the car from. If my memmory is correct it was from a guy who worked at an auto parts store in Dover NH called "The Drivers Seat" which is now out of business and the information I had was that the original number matching shortblock was at their machine shop and was damaged beyond repair. I never followed up on that since back in those days these cars weren't bringing the kind of money they do today and I knew where I could get a good used DZ block for $400 (the one that's in the car now) To put things in perspective for the guys just getting into this hobby, I bought the car in the early 80s missing the engine but otherwise pretty much complete for $1800... My wife (who is long gone) thought I had lost my mind.. At that time and for several years before I was buying early Camaros & Chevelles for $200-$300 and parting them out. One time I bought 2 69 SS Camaros, 1 big block & 1 350 car both missing the engines but pretty complete including 12 bolt rears, disc brakes, etc and paid $700 for the pair.

Update... I guess memory has a way of playing tricks on me so I have to make a correction. Just looking at the pics of the car taken when I first brought it home and they are dated 6/88 so it wasn't the early 80s when I bought it, it was a bit later. Everything else is accurate.

Hi Brett obviously you don't have any paperwork on the car? But if you contact Chevrolet of Canada and give them your VIN they will tell you if they have a record of it as they have records for all cars sold. I think there is a small fee? Have you tried the dealer search on this site? I was able to track down my dealership after much ground work. The dealer is in California, but the name and ownership has since changed. It is a great feeling to find the original dealer, I hope you find it soon.

P.S. love this story, keep the dream alive!

Brett anything new on locating the original engine ? I should have bought it way back in the 80s when I knew it's whereabouts but at the time it was described as being blown up "beyond repair" and I had another DZ block. I can't verify the condition at that time of the original engine since I never saw it. Numbers back then weren't as important as they are these days and these cars weren't all that hard to find. I remember parting out a 69 L78 car and a 69 Ram Air 400 Firebird. Both were restorable.

Hi there Mark, Just got in last night from VEGAS. Did a lot of research last week. I do not think I alone have the ability to find the original dealer that sold this Z. The Dealerships that responded do not keep records that old or were not in business in the late 60's... I have also, contacted most all Yox leads in the Northeast... empty on that search too.

Sure would be great to know what State this car was sold in... I could narrow it down, BTW, will do the GM Canada search this week too.

HAS ANYONE HAD LUCK THRU THE DMV HISTORY SEARCHES?? Does anyone have an in$ider that can help? The State of Washington DMV will not help... though I have not offered a bribe... yet.

The great news is that the VIN block is being removed from the Z this week. Indiana Greg just got back from Barrett should have pics to share soon. Will try calling you tonight.

Brett

I am not sure if I am following all of this correctly . But if you are advertising that you are looking for a specific DZ block and giving out the info on ebay or anywhere else saying," BTW- I am looking for a DZ block 1N###### with V0331DZ on the deck" ... there are potentially guys who will see that info and make that block up , contact you and sell it to you ... so if that is the case I suggest you get pictures of the casting date,VIN stamp and deck pad so you can post them in "Tag Team" section to get opinions on whether or not they are real or re-stamps befroe you exchange any money so you avoid the possibility of being scammed .

basically that means *opinions on how good the restamp is*... :) This was a big concern of mine as well when Brett told me that "Indiana Greg" had the original block from my old car but anything is possible and Brett sure seems to know what he's doing. I was concerned because when I bought the car in the 80s I was told the original block was sitting at a machine shop here in NH blown up beyond repair. I had another DZ block that needed nothing and back in those days these cars weren't bringing the kind of money they do today so I never looked into getting the original. At the time I also didn't know about the VIN being by the oil filter. To show how times have changed I paid $400 for the perfect std. bore DZ block I used in the car and it came with the correct crankshaft which needed to be welded & turned. How the original block last seen in NH badly damaged ended up in good condition in Indianna is a story I'd like to hear myself. If I remember correctly Brett told me that Greg bought it at the swap meet in Carlisle PA which is entirely possible and having never seen the damage personally I can't say whether it was repairable or not. Brett are you out there ?
