Hey, just bought a 82 Z28 cheap and want to make it road course car. Its been sitting along time and can't get the car to run. It turns over and spits but won't stay running. My question is is this engine worth saving or should I spend my time on something more modern say 350 TPI?
Thanks Lee

Junk it!!! Have worked on a few cross fire vettes and I like them but the technology leaves a lot to be desired especially 26 years in the future! Also with it being a 305 you won't get enough out of it to justify the rebuild I am sure it is in need of. You may want to look over at thirdgen.org or pro-touring.com for some info. If I were starting from scratch like you will be I would sink an LSX in it and make a fun reliable ride out of it, plus it has modern technology that BUNCHES of suppliers make hopup parts for.

When you talke it out don't cut anything up, take your time. People will buy that stuff - not a lot, but hey any $$ is helpful!
Harness, distributor, lower intake, plate, injector assems, air cleaner assem, air cleaner nuts - keep it all together. Maybe AIR system too.

Brings back memmories of my son & I experimenting with an old crossfire injection manifold we took off a donor engine that we put into a pickup. Hogged out the tiny ports as best we could to match the intake ports in a set of heads we had laying around and fabbed a new top that took 2 Holley 500 2bbls. What a waste of time & effort....

I agree w/ Bonzo and also recommend whatever you take out, try to keep it intact. I learned that the hard way with car #1 in my signature below. The crossfire injection 305 was supposed to be the 1982 version of the 302 cross ram in the 1969 Z28. The crossfire had alot of issues with fires even back when they were unmodified & completely stock 5 years down the line.
The technology is now available for you to stick a nicely modified 350 TPI in there. If you want to keep things simpler get a wiring harness from a 1983 or 1984 Z28 w/ the 305 H.O. carburetor engine. That way you can just put a 350 w/ a carb on top.

I had an 82 Z28 w/cross fire. With some tinkering they can run OK. If the motor is good, buy a carb, intake & HEI dist and drive it like that for a while. You can re-use the parts on a 350 down the line. I switched mine to a carb setup. You just need a reg to get the fuel pressure down. I used the blue holley. The motor is the same as the 83-84 H.O. motor (same cam) so its better the the LG4. I ran the carbed 82 against my buddy's 85 5.0 TPI. He got me out of the hole, but I caught him and passed every time. Have fun with the car!

If its the same crossfire parts as an 82 vette, someone will buy them!

Yes, someone will buy them if you don't want to tinker with it. There was an article in auto-restorer magazine a couple of months ago where a guy actually restored one in a '83 vette. So there is a bit a of market out there however small that it is....
