: Trunk Lock Woes - 90 Degrees off

I am installing the locks in the car and I noticed that my trunk lock is 90 degrees off and I need some insight on this. I saw a thread where the guy said he just got a new one but...

Firewheel says that I somehow got a '68 tail panel and that only a 68 lock will fit so this leaves me with 3 options:

1 - File the tail panel out to get it to fit (ouch!)
2 - Get a '68 trunk lock and have a different trunk key
3 - Get a '68 lock set and have a different ignition key.

I am not happy about any of the above solutions. Does anyone have any info on this?

Thanks,

Bill

Option #4

File another slot and rotate your lock..... Be sure to tape the panel well so you don't chip your paint.

Your option 4 was my option 1. Not excited about doing that but I will look at it tonight to make sure the lock retainer will still hold the lock and it won't rotate (which is what I am worried about)

you got a 67. i had same problem. they say ih you got a 68 panel not a 67. i looked at different venders and they all got it that way on the notches. its either buy a 68 lock. of option 2 file out. but when you file only file in and not out. when filing out that is when you chip the paint. the clip will still be fine after you file it and get key in right position. use a fine file not a coarse as a coarse on will rip paint off of car also. it took half an hour to do it but got it in and no chipped paint.

Bill, I just went through this with my 67. Two cylinder styles were used in 67. If you have a 2008 NPD catalog look on pg.37 or go to there web site they show a picture that helps you figure out the correct one I bought both and sent the one back that was 90 degrees off.

yes chunky it all depended a 67 but as i said all tail panel was based on a 68. any book or web sight says all tail panel the same. it isnt, but all say it is if you replaced it.

if the second version for the 67 lock won't work buy a 68 lock and have it re-keyed or replace with your old cylinder tumblers.

Just went through this last month. Went to open my trunk and the tumbler was stuck, so I drilled it out and ordered a new lock for a 67. It was 90* off just like yours, put a 68 lock in and it was fine.

I guess they changed the lock style sometime in 67, My tail panel is original. May of 67 car.

I bought new locks for my 67 and EVERYTHING came with it, including the ignition. Why not just buy a 68 set that has them ALL? Here is a link to a set that has them all(ignition, trunk, doors and glove box).
