Has anyone installed a t5 transmission in their 1st gen. I have a 67 firebird 400 (pontiac) It was originally a muncy 4 spd. Took it out many years ago. Don't ask why, It's a sore subject. Anyway I recently bought an m21, would like to shift again. Wondering what would be involved in putting in a 5 spd. Can you use the original bellhousing? How about the clutch? Thanks, Ed

Depends on what T5 you are talking about. If it is from a late eighties early nineties Camaro Firebird it wont last.

I thought it was the other way around. A friend of mine bought a T5 out of an 82 Camaro and I did a search on here and it was stated the T5 from a late eighties early ninties F-body was the stronger one. and the older one was the weaker one.

To answer the question, you have to shorten the driveshaft and cut another hole for the shifter. Not sure about the bellhousing or the clutch but Im pretty sure if you got a chevy bellhousing for a diagphram clutch you could us a regular clutch and the chevy B/H and it would work. So, since I had to do all of that work cutting and sawing for a T5, I was going to wait and put a T56 in mine. I took an AWESOME ride in a friends Camaro on here with a 6speed and the T56 would be my choice for a tranny for my particular application.

The T5 I was looking at was out of an 89 camaro. I already have the munci so I will almost certainly go that route, I was just curious about the t5. It sure would be nice to have an extra gear. Would love to go with a tremac, just very expensive. I bought my car in 1990 for less tan a tremac would cost! The sad part is, I sold my munci, pedals, shifter, linkage ect for 75 bucks. Last fall I rebought a munci for 350. Now I need another grand worth of things to make it happen. If anyone else has any t5 input that would be great. Thanks, Ed

Congrats on your retirement, Thank you for serving our country!!!:hurray:

Search "T-5" here on the forums, and you'll find lots of posts on this. The dealbreakers (for most people) are how far back the shifter is on a T-5, the mounting angle, and the fact the T-5 is generally weak.

You would need this T5 gearset http://www.gforcetransmissions.com/pdfs/PricingT-5.indd.pdf to live behind a 400ci. And your T5 would need to be a World Class Unit for the changeover.

After all this, I think there are much better and cheaper options out there for a 5 speed.

Like what Jody? Can you give examples? I would like a 5 speed...I think...more than a 6 speed.

TKO500 and TKO600?
Ive looked into these. Im trying to find something I could get at a junkyard and rebuild myself for 2 reasons; cheap and learning experience.
