View Full Version : xe268 in a 305?
bgn4chng Mar 9th, 02, 11:51 PM just curious;
how do you guys think the xe268 would run/sound in a 305 with performer rpm intake, freeflow exhaust,hollow converter,no computer,holley 650 vac sec,stock converter,700r4 trans,2.73gears(for now 3.73 or 4.10 soon)in a 1986 camaro?too much?
bgn4chng Mar 14th, 02, 10:16 PM maybe i should clarify a bit;
the cat converter has been hollowed out and the torque converter is stock,also the trans (700r4)is fresh with a corvette servo and a mild shift kit.
i have been partial to crower ams in the past as they seem to offer more aggressive lobe curves but since most people here talk about cranes i was wondering about the difference (in a 305 as described earlier)between an xe 268 and an xe274
thanks in advance for your replies!
boodlefoof Mar 15th, 02, 04:00 AM the 268 may be a bit much for a 305. I also think it would do better with a little bit looser converter... around a 2000-2400rpm stall. The rear gears you've got also need a changing to help this cam work well.
The XE 268 is a Comp Cams grind.
bgn4chng Mar 17th, 02, 07:32 PM thanks for the reply boodle.i have seen your replies often and youseem to know what you are talking about http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif
i am currently saving for the gear swap (3.73 seems to be right for what i want to do)the torque converter has just been replaced but it is a stock one and was only $100.
i have seen big gear head in here and was wonering if you had his link?that guy really knows his stuff and being in central ohio he's not too far from me.
thanks again for the advice

c4boom Mar 17th, 02, 07:59 PM way too big imo the stock 305 heads do not flow enough to suport that cam the way you would like. i would go with the 3.73's first
bgn4chng Mar 18th, 02, 08:57 PM probably right guys http://www.camaros.net/forum/frown.gif
well now i'm faced with the dillema of whether to try porting the heads (i have a spare set from a ,78 monte but i think they have smaller valves)getting some sr305 torquers,or just building a 350.i have had great results porting 350 (461-462)heads but no experience with the 305.
i know everyone on this site will say "there's no substitute for cubic inches!"
but im running on a really tight budget (for now!)the gears are definately first tho and i'm gonna contact biggearhead for a quote on some 3.73's and a rear overhaul!
one more ?has anyone tried the powertrax no slip locker?i saw it in jegs catalog and it bolts into either posi or open rearends and claims to offer smooth cornering and total lockup on the straights.too good to be true?
thanks again for your input!
0260b4u Mar 19th, 02, 02:37 AM the cam will work my brother is building a show truck, and doesn't race or much less bury down on the throtttle. he has a 305 and we just put a 292 comp. cams in it, and believe me it does sound good, but as far as the power the other guys are right, the 305 heads will not like the aftermarket cams.
Chris Edwards Mar 19th, 02, 03:58 AM I have a XE268 in my 327 4bbl, has 70cc heads, not ported, but gasketmatched, 3:08 rear and a 3000 stall, it kicks ass, although I want a 3:55 rear. oh and it has a TH350 with a shiftkit.
but a 305 may be a little steep

RickB1B Mar 19th, 02, 08:37 PM Chris, I have a Crane 266 in my 327 w/th350, 3.42 rear and 64cc heads. My question is, how is that 3000 stall on the street. I would like to go with a bigger stall, but don't know what I want. currently have a stock stall.
BTW to answer the post on this topic I think the cam is too much, a 258 or 260 would be good.
Chris Edwards Mar 20th, 02, 04:47 AM the 3000 stall works GREAT on the street, as long as you run a Transcooler, I have a big trans cooler and a electric fan, so it really works well. flashpoint is about 3200rpm but it moves below those rpm ranges just fine. great launches... and I cruise all the time, drove over 400 Round trip miles to Ocean City MD from the baltimore area, no problems..

boodlefoof Mar 20th, 02, 05:08 AM Rick,
with such a small cam, I would think you wouldn't see much benefit from a higher stall speed converter. The low end with the small cam should be enough to not need a looser converter.
