View Full Version : goodmark or dynacorn quarter...how to tell??
redfire69 Oct 28th, 08, 10:35 AM So I think I have two different brand full quarters. The drivers fits good and has a round hole for the bumper mount and the passenger seems low and has an oval hole for the bumper mount. All other measurements check out, but the pass quarter is low thru the wheel opening and deck lid area.
Anyone know how tell the difference and identify the brand? The problem is I may have to get another passenger quarter if I can improve the fit at all...
Thanks in advance!!
BelAirBob Oct 28th, 08, 10:52 AM Actually, they could both be the same brand. The right (pass) sides have historically been tougher to fit than the drivers The tooling was not improved until recently. GoodMark QPs are tooled and stamped by Golden Legion. Dynacorn quarters are actually made by a different company in Taiwan.
redfire69 Oct 28th, 08, 12:19 PM Any way to tell the re-tooled version? I'm having a tough time with this pass side. Seems like the quarter is stamped (vertically) lower thru the WW and trunk opening....
BelAirBob Oct 28th, 08, 12:36 PM Got any pics? Could just be that the quarter is "squashed" down slightly more. In other words, if you look from the rear, could be more of a bend. If this is the case, this can sometimes be corrected by laying the QP flat on the ground, and pushing gently down to flatten it out, thereby raising the area near the trunk a bit. Tough to tell without seeing it. There is no way to tell the brand however, unless its a GM part, which would have a date code stamped up near the forward trunk lid bend. Determining new or old tooling is more a function of the lines. If its fairly crisp in the detail lines, this generally indicated newer tooling. Older tooling (even GM) has softer lines. Look around the areas in the door jamb indentations and comapre one side to the other. If the driver's side is really defined and the pass side is not, you might have part of the answer. Hope this helps.
redfire69 Oct 28th, 08, 02:49 PM Hey Bob, here are some pics. You might be able to tell that the pass top body line is slightly lower, even though my framerails, rear panel, and rockers measure out, so you might be onto something here. Also, you are dead on w/the lines around the door opening which are softer on the pass side QP. Let me know what you think...

BelAirBob Oct 28th, 08, 03:01 PM For starters, it looks like the trunk is cocked. I would open the trunk, and first try to tweak it so that the right side goes down. Then, try again. If that does not get it close,I'd try a repro trunk lid as opposed to the original. I have never had luck with trying to add a GM lid to repro quarters. Some have, but I've never been that lucky. Once you get it closer, I'd suggest cutting a small slit in the quarter in the gutter area. I'm on a different computer, and will post annotated pics for you later tonight.
redfire69 Oct 28th, 08, 03:20 PM yeah, I had a repop deck lid on with the same issue. I changed it to the GM because of gap issues w/the repop (almost 3/8's narrower side to side). I think the truck being raised up a little is part of the problem, and I thought that was the only problem until I started measuring the quarter body line and side bumper mount whole which seem a little low.
When you said to bend the quarter, did you mean to lay it on the floor in the same upright position, then push down around the truck opening area? That would effectively bring the body line up a little?
Appreciate all the help!
BelAirBob Oct 28th, 08, 05:00 PM I meant to lay it flat, out side surface up,then push down some to spread it out a bit. How is the pass qp fit up front?
Did you make sure the tailpan was level?
Johnny B Oct 28th, 08, 05:44 PM Ron, Did you replace the RH outer wheelhouse also? I had the exact same issue as the one you describe. I made a mistake....(long story)....my repo wheelhouse was 3/8" too low causing alignment of everything else to be off.
How does the RH door fit? This was my clue that I had a big problem......Jb
redfire69 Oct 29th, 08, 03:49 AM Hi Guys,
Tail pan is level, trunk floor and frame rails are level.
I am replacing the inner and outer WWs, but I'm not welding the outers until I have the quarters fitted where they need to be. RH door fits OK except near the bottom of the quarter which is a little tight. I did re-skin the doors, so it's hard to tell where all the issues are coming from...
67conv.cam Oct 29th, 08, 06:19 AM my fit issues from dynacorn convertible quarters..the right side quarter was 1/4 inch narrower than left side...trunk opening edge of 1/4 to top lip of 1/4....
looking at picture the lid is off sure enough...take your time it will be worth it..
