flashing check engine light means there is a misfire
how loud is the tapping?
can you get a video?
im betting you have a collapsed lifter somewhere

it's coming from the block..

Use a mechanics stethosope or long screwdriver to the ear...taps and stuff locations can be very desceving, espec if a collasped piston or bearing deep inside.
And check from underneath to.

I got the same problem w/my 99 my mechanic says it's a piston w/build up on it that needs to be re-seated. needless to say about a $1000 to tear an engine apart to stop a loud tapping. Car only has 56,000 miles on it to I should stay w/the jap car I have it has 166,000 and no engine problems.

We has a Ad on TV...mechanic holding a spark plug " we had to remove the sump, then pull the crank and piston, found dirty spark plugs"
"A piston with build up " IF that is true means carbon build up...carbon build up doest cause tapping, very unlikely with modern engine maintaince computers...and simply by pporing a small steam of water into the engine while running will re carb it
And "re seat it" re seat a pistion???
1st simply do what I suggest in my post above yours...locate the tap.
