The factory bracket is rivited to the tunnel and stays in place when you remove the console...

The two I have seen are bolted ... from the bottom. I put the bracket on the console and then mount the assembly. I've seen many pics on here of the bracket on the tunnel without the console so it can be done both ways.

I stand corrected but the nuts go on from the under side of the tunnel...

I always put the bracket in first (nuts are hard to reach with the trans in the way), then put the bottom of the console in (you have to angle it to slip it under the bracket), attach all screws and bolts into the lower console. Then put the top on.

mine has the original riv-nuts so you don't have to mess with the underside.....the general knew what he was doing back then.....

I made the mistake of bolting down this bracket on top of the carpet instead of underneath and had to drill new side holes in the bracket.

Joe - they all have riv-nuts but not at the forward mounting bracket. If you look at the bracket mounted under the ashtray it's bolts are press fit or welded to the bracket and the nuts have to go on from the under side. Can't really see them in this pic but you can see the bracket in question. You can also see an exploded view in the AIM - upc D55 A2
