View Full Version : Anyone tried to quit chewing tobacco?
dfahy68 Oct 31st, 08, 09:26 AM I've been using Skoal for almost 20 years. I promised when my first child was born I was done. Well, my wife is due in less than two weeks so it's the moment of truth. I know I can do it, but I hate to think of never having a dip again. It's a nasty habit and horrible for you, but it's one of those things I enjoy doing. I've tried gum, but it isn't the same. I even switched to pouches thinking it would be easier to quit. I've quit before but always went back after a couple months. My dad died young of a heart attack after smoking his entire life. I don't want to end up with half my face gone from mouth cancer. That's what I keep telling myself. :noway:
cencal69 Oct 31st, 08, 09:43 AM My dad chewed for 20 years also. He did mint snuff, after trying sunflower seeds, toothpicks, etc., and he does not chew anymore. It takes self decipline more than anything as you know. I wish you good luck. And you might want to try an athletic sport that you can take some aggresion out on something.
Hoosierncali Oct 31st, 08, 10:43 AM I feel your pain brother. My wife made me promise the same thing before our first. All I can tell you is that even after 11 years of not dipping, I still feel the urge every now and then. Shows how insidious that stuff is. I have no secrets of how to quit, I just went cold turkey. Good luck.
tejasrs/ss Oct 31st, 08, 10:45 AM not sure if it's the same as smoking but I smoked for 20 years while I was in the military. I kept telling myself when I turned 40 I was going to quit. Then I quit for 6 months and one day I was hanging out with some friends and one of them offered me a smoke. I accepted thinking that I could smoke one and not worry about it. So much for that! I bought a pack thinking I could smoke a pack and not pick up the habit again... so much for that! Finally I quit again (and for good..crossing my fingers!!) on July the 7th. I see this as an alcoholic does. You will probably always have a craving but you can't have that one smoke or that one dip or that one drink thinking it will be "ok":noway: It takes willpower but you can do it!!

I have smoked and chewed for many years. The only way I could quit was with the patches or the pills. Nicotine is so damn addictive! When I smoked 2 packs a day, I once walked 3 miles to a store in 10 degree weather. Now tell me how bad it controls us. I will tell you that dipping is harder to quit, because you can do it anywhere and it does not smell on your clothes/house/car.
one thing. If you think about your child, and how big a commitment that is to be there when they need you, I think you will do fine.
yellow69RS Oct 31st, 08, 11:00 AM I agree with Armando, been there done that. Now after quitting smoking twice and gaining 40 pounds each time I can't afford to quit again. I'd weigh to much. Good luck on quitting the chew.

They were all friends but one...
vr1967 Oct 31st, 08, 11:25 AM I guess we are all different in how we handle it. I woke up one morning, and made up my mind to quit drinking and chewing. Hadn't had a chew since, and when we complete jobs, I always have 1 (and only one) beer with my crew, but other than that, I don't drink any alcohol. They respect me for it, but it also "bonds" us in a sence, that they know I will 'drink' with them.
Oldrocker Oct 31st, 08, 12:11 PM I smoked 3 packs a day for many years and was able to quit cold turkey. This was after watching my 35 year old brother that had never smoked rot away and die from cancer. That was 14 years ago and I've not looked back.
Badbird Oct 31st, 08, 12:15 PM I've never tried this ugly, disgusting habit!.....I'm a smoker and a midnight toker!.....I remember I had an employee (long gone now) who used to chew that crap!.....I could tell his every movement, while doing his detex clock rounds, by just looking on the ground, at his disgusting spit gobs!.....Just purchase some of that nicotine chewing gum but don't take too much as you'll have these really strange and vivid dreams, the same that you get from the nicotine patches!
67CamaroD Oct 31st, 08, 02:35 PM I used to quit chewing for 1 week after new years every year just to prove to myself that I could quit. Haven't done that in the last 4 years now. I even chew when I have the stomache flu. One time I quit for a month, but went out with some buddies drinking and started back again. Good Luck.
rolling-robert Oct 31st, 08, 03:15 PM i dont smoke, dont drink and dont chew.
Just the idea that people are making money of your habbit keeps me from that stuff.
Dont give them what they want.
GMJoe Oct 31st, 08, 03:18 PM I quit dipping about 20 yrs ago, it was easy.... I just replaced the snuff with cigarettes, not the smartest move Ive ever made (I still smoke)
Nantooch Oct 31st, 08, 04:36 PM I quit dipping shortly after exiting the Navy 20 yrs ago. Looked in the mirror one day and noticed that my lower gums had receded a bit. Tossed my tin in the garbage and saw my gums come back in about two weeks. I never got the craving to take it back up, though cleanings at the dentist take a bit longer now. Only positive effects of chewing was that it didn't allow tarter build up.
Denvervet Oct 31st, 08, 04:48 PM Nicorette gum will do it pronto. Of course then you have to break the gum habit...but much cleaner and no cancer.
supersam Oct 31st, 08, 05:45 PM GOOD LUCK!
I've dipped for 30+ years and wished that I'd never started. I've quit 5 or more times for periods of 2 or 3 months. My best advice is that if you do quit and get out 2 or 3 weeks, DO NOT EVER DIP AGAIN.
You think you can take just one, but you can't!
If someone finds the magic cure, I'll make a $1,000 donation to your favorite charity if you share it and I can quit for 12 months!!
kart11 Oct 31st, 08, 05:47 PM Just remember if your quiting because of a new child , put back the dip money for his/her college fund.
bigords68 Oct 31st, 08, 06:40 PM 18 years (half my life) and tried many times once for a year but back. There is 3X the amount of nicotine in a tin as a pack of smokes and it goes right to the blood stream through the blood vessells in your lip. I once read an article in out door life written by a heroin addict/meth addict and said that dip was the hardest thing he ever had to quit. 3rd days the worst. give yourself a long weekend and send the wife away. good luck. If you figure out the secret let me know.:(
Badbird Oct 31st, 08, 06:40 PM Whatever you do, DON'T DOUBLE DIP!:noway:
AlexFolino Oct 31st, 08, 09:22 PM Im 21 and have been chewing since i was 16. Bad habit. People woulnt believe me but im not addicted.. I chew because i like it. It seems to pass the time. I have stopped for months at a time before just because i didnt want to do it. Ive been that way my whole life with stuff though, i just seem to be able to stop if i want to and not do it. But i understand that you want to quit and i know it seems like theres not a better feeling in the world than throwing a chew in in the morning but if you really want to stop, you have to REALLY WANT TO STOP AND MAKE IT HAPPEN! Im behind you 100% because i recently had quit last monday because im just tired of spending the money on it and the cancer thing scares me although i know so many people who have been chewing over 40 years are perfectly fine(although it only takes 1!). Im going strong right now and have no urges what so ever but stick with it and youll quit! Im backing you 100%
crustyz11 Nov 1st, 08, 02:31 AM This may sound like a bunch of BS but just give it a REAL try, OK?. (1) Switch to Skoal mint bandits. (2)Buy some Eclipse Mint gum. (3)For every-other dip take a piece of Eclipse gum and chomp on it once, tuck it in your cheek like a dip. (It will burn like hell!) (3)keep weening yourself off tobacco {4 dips per day-4 Eclipse per day/ 3 dips per day-5 Eclipse per day/ 2 dips per day-6 Eclipse per day.....etc} at your own pace until you're done. Then DON'T LOOK BACK!!!! This method worked for me extremely well, just make sure you brush and floss cuz that amount of gum makes your teeth feel gross!
Good luck, and congrats on the new arrival!
dfahy68 Nov 1st, 08, 09:30 AM Thanks for all the encouragement! I just have to get over the next couple of days, and then the next few weeks, and once it's out of my system, I'll be fine. The challenge is in a month or two, once I've quit, is not going back for another can thinking, "I can quit anytime I want." And then the process starts all over again. I always used to say, "after this can I'm done", but then I'd buy another. and another. I hate the idea of a substance having control over me. I wish I'd never started this habit. I'm sure smokers think the same thing.
