View Full Version : Voter turnout?
JimM Nov 4th, 08, 07:12 AM What was the votor turnout in your local polling place like?
How bout some basic location info, time you voted, and
"How crowded was your polling place as compared to previous elections you have participated in?
JimM Nov 4th, 08, 07:15 AM I voted at 7:15 this morning, in Kendall County, Illinois, some 55 miles southwest of Chicago.
I don't know if they opened at 6 or at 7. I always vote on the way to work in the morning.
My polling place is typically pretty empty at that time.
I actually had to stand in line (a line of one) to get a booth today, a first ever.
I'd say there were 3 times as many people there as in the past. Note this would not make this place crowded, just less empty.
parkbrau Nov 4th, 08, 07:34 AM Sent mine in via absentee.
johnmh Nov 4th, 08, 07:47 AM Stood in line @6:40 this morning. Till the doors opened at 7 the line was about 45-50 deep. About as long a line as I can remember for a small town in this part of Wyo.
Once inside it went quick. Voted, stopped for a cup of coffee to go, B.S. w/a friend and still was at work by 7:35.
Lots of interest in this election!
Gary L Nov 4th, 08, 08:27 AM I was in line to drop my absentee ballot off about 6:50. There were lines out the door 2 sides of the building. I am guessing 30 people waiting. WE have a big ballot this time so voters were adding extra time to get the job done. Looks like a big turnout.
Voted at 8 am this morning. I was the 135th person in my precinct to vote according to the optical machine. First time I've seen these optical machines. The volunteer commented that I was the first person out of 135 that was able to place my completed ballot into the machine the first time without a problem. The poor woman in front of me had her ballot go in about 2 inches and stop, when she tried to pull it back out to try again the privacy sleeve pulled off leaving the ballot for everyone to see how she voted. I turned away to give her the privacy she should have had. But took one look back when I heard a loud noise to see her pulling the ballot box across the floor by her ballot trying to pull it out of the machine. The volunteers aren't allowed to touch the ballot and told her she was on her own. After the machine slid a few feet the ballot came out in one piece and after a couple more attempts and some coaxing by the volunteer she was able to get her ballot into the machine.
Pretty sad these are the best machines they can come up with. Give me the chads back please!
68Holdon Nov 4th, 08, 09:10 AM Our polls opened at 6.00 am this morning. Drove by at 6.45am parking lot was packed so I kept going. Went back at 10.30am and still packed. Went inside and waited about 20 minutes to vote I was #289 for my district. Our town has about 3000 familes and we are divded into three districts.
IDS_Bill Nov 4th, 08, 09:12 AM I showed up at 7:11 in rural AZ north of Phoenix and waited 20min...
no69x-44 Nov 4th, 08, 09:28 AM My wife went to vote at 6:00am. She said that there was a small line then but it went very fast. I went at 10:00 and I zipped in and out of there in no time. My polling place handles 2 districts. I would say there was 2 people voting at each district and I was one of them. People coming in and out of the place, but no lines.
Dayton68Z28 Nov 4th, 08, 10:17 AM I don't even know where my polling place is???
I vote through the mail.
mb302rs Nov 4th, 08, 10:41 AM I voted at about 9:45 am there were at least 3 times as many people as normal appx 125. I always vote at the same time in order to avoid the line. Didn't work this time ! They said it was a mad house at 7:00 when they opened. But everyone was very polite.
Scott Taylor Nov 4th, 08, 10:51 AM I voted at 7:45 this morning in Granite Bay California. I walked right in and they pointed me toward a vacant booth. 5 minutes in and out.
68DaveV Nov 4th, 08, 11:10 AM Voted in suburb of St. Louis @ 8:15. Maybe 10 people ahead of me. (all 10 were in my M-Z line, nobody in the A-L line) 15 minutes in and out.
tall guy Nov 4th, 08, 11:22 AM Did my civic duty at 7:30 this morning, in and out in about 1/2 hour!
ChevyThunder Nov 4th, 08, 11:24 AM 8 AM five people at the voting spot... out of my car , voted and back in my car in about 10 min total. So minutes south of San Francisco.
My brother is voting in Ontario , So Cal and they opened up late . It took 2 1/2 hours for him to vote.
funbnme Nov 4th, 08, 11:30 AM I live in Weston, FL (suburb of Ft Lauderdale). Very crowded area...about 70-75k people in a 10 square mile area.
I showed up at around 7:45am today.
Our voting place had voters from 3 precincts. It took me about 1:45 mins to wait in line (one big line for all 3 precincts) and I was the 129th voter in my precinct to cast a ballott.
In our area, about 30% of the registered voters cast an early ballott (we have early voting for about the last 2 weeks here). Lines at some of the places during early voting were 1-4 hours. Here's some stats from the local paper:
By the end of the day Saturday, 231,581 people had voted early in Broward and 100,488 absentee ballots had been returned. That is almost 33 percent of the county's registered voters.
click Nov 4th, 08, 11:56 AM We went in about 11am, no lines but avg. turnout from previous years. Took less than 5 min. to get ballot, fill in circles with pen and feed into the shredder, (ballot computer). Got our "I voted" sticker and off to Culvers for free root beer float with the sticker.
I was # 590 to vote today. Big turnout is expected in the evening after work.
camaroman7d Nov 4th, 08, 12:01 PM Voted at about 10:00AM I was #186 & 187 (two sheets)
Small line about 3 people ahead of me and about 8 voting stations (all occupied)
Vacaville has a population of about 95K people and is ~23sq. miles
I was in and out in about 15 minutes, I'm sure the morning crowd was much larger and the evening crowd will be even larger yet. There are many places to vote in town and they split it up pretty good so I don't think we will see any major lines or crowds.
DougP Nov 4th, 08, 12:51 PM I was in line for 2 hours and 25 minutes today -- but I hung in there and voted!
prostreet69camaro Nov 4th, 08, 01:19 PM Took me a total of 5 minutes today at our elementary school at 12:00 noon. No line at all. Plus my daughter turned 18 Nov.1st and I took her to vote for her first one. I expect it to be very busy this evening.
68rs406 Nov 4th, 08, 02:00 PM What are you guys talking about? Is there an election for something in your areas?
The Sleeper 327 Nov 4th, 08, 02:13 PM nice....about 1.5 hours. Should have preregistered, friend took 10 minutes as he was preregistered. What a waste the registration process was here. Write on paper just to throw away and enter into a computer.
Badbird Nov 4th, 08, 02:31 PM I passed out while waiting in line this morning, probably due to lack of breakfast!.....I felt dizzy, weak and my stomach was gurgling before I hit the ground!.....I banged my head pretty bad and when I woke up, I was in my bed, never knowing how I got there!
BK69 Nov 4th, 08, 02:46 PM Voted at 6:30 this morning with my son and wife. My 19 yr. old son voted for first time, he didn't know anybody on the ballot but the Pres./VP selections. Turnout expectations were high but almost 40% of state voted early voting. I was the 39th voter, then went to work hard at job site to spread my wealth.
South Side Goons & Hitmen Nov 4th, 08, 02:52 PM I voted just before 11AM today. I voted at the library. I was lucky to get the last booth before it started to get a bit crowded. The thing I like is that we just darken the circle next to our choice(s) like a test exam in High School or even College. The result is scanned in. And if you darken the center and do a write in they pull it manually. You can also use a specially designed cover to keep your choices private before the guy scans it into the machine. IMHO the best time to go is around 10:15/10:30 when everyone else is at work, in school or doing whatever.
78MBA Nov 4th, 08, 02:59 PM I voted at 9:00am this morning at our local library in Fort Thomas, KY (5 min from downtown Cincinnati, OH). There was a small crowd inside the polling room but no real wait or big lines.
Daytona Yellow 69 Z/28 Nov 4th, 08, 03:52 PM My wife & I have tried on 3 differant ocasions to early vote so we could avoid the long lines today. Each time threre were lines out the door and around the building and people claiming they waited 2-2 1/2 hours. We decided to just wait untill today. I was fininshing up some yard work this morning and she desided to drive by the middle school to see how bad the lines were. Not long after she left, she called my and said to get my rearend over there as ther were no lines. I droped everything and headed over as fast as I could and was in and out in 10 mins. :hurray:
Rodder Nov 4th, 08, 04:02 PM Walked in the door at 10:01am, back out the door at 10:39am. In 2004 it took me a full hour. Actually the line was getting longer while I was there this time, probably would have been a full hour if I had shown up at 10:30am.
1969ProStreetCamaro Nov 4th, 08, 04:20 PM I left work today at my normal time(4:30pm) and only took 10 mins. to place my vote. Normally that time of day at the polls where I live is very active, moderate activity this election. I suspect a majority of people left their workplaces earlier than normal to avoid long lines at the polls.
