View Full Version : 68 rs
Lloyd's68 Nov 6th, 08, 10:36 AM Hello all,:D
I just ran across a nice 68 RS which seems to be in good condition consider that it has been outside for 15 years. I have some pictures, but here is the scoop on the car. It is a Cali car. I have not comfirmed if the engine is original or not, but the engine bay seems untouched except for the intake and carburetor. The owner stated that the car was a 2 barrel, now has a 4. It has the tic toc tac, 3 speed manual on the floor with console and gauges, standard interior. rust is a very minor issue.
I have not purchase the car yet.
What is it worth if:
1. AS IS
2. Frame on restoration
3. Frame off restoration-not concourse

What is the easiest way to check originality of engine and transmission code?
sixTate Nov 6th, 08, 11:09 AM Geez, was it parked running? Is it blown up?
I would just clean that up and drive it. What is the interior shape? I guess I would buy that for $6,000 more if it had been a 4 speed.

...a low (and I believe 275 hp) 327 won't have the VIN stamped on the engine pad, ...however there would be the "T02XXMU" type code. Since (from the cowl tag) that car was build in Feb (02C), ...the stamping would be within that time frame if it's the original block. You could also check the casting of the block (under the exhaust manifold) forward of the starter.
As for the trans (I assume Saginaw), ...there would be a stamping just below the side cover on the driver side. (here's a shot off a '67 http://rides.webshots.com/photo/1254455252063892652MUDLqj )
Hope that helps...
Eric Kammerer Nov 6th, 08, 12:27 PM Being a mid year 68, it may have a partial VIN on the engine pad even though it is the base engine. Here's a link that shows where to find all the numbers.

It's hard to see from the pics what the overall condition is, but if it is solid and all numbers match and nothing important/expensive is missing, it's probably a $10K to $15K car as it sits now, maybe more if it is very solid and runs well. Even with a complete nuts and bolts resto, it would probably be right around either side of $30K.
sixTate Nov 6th, 08, 12:34 PM Judging by that dust and no air cleaner, I doubt it runs.
travlinz28 Nov 6th, 08, 03:07 PM 1. 8-10 k
2. 16-18 k
3. 21-24 k
The Sleeper 327 Nov 6th, 08, 06:20 PM 1. 8-10 k
2. 16-18 k
3. 21-24 k
agree!! maybe a little lower on the way it sits as it is hard to know what all it needs from pics, and also higher if "more" original than thought.
71maligreen Nov 6th, 08, 07:03 PM what ever he wants if its under 10 you better go get it fast or it will be gone!!!
RSSSfanatic Nov 6th, 08, 08:02 PM Being a LOS car, it is probably solid underneath. It has had a color change, but it has some nice options - factory air and tic toc & gauges. I would jump on it if $10K or less.
RobSS1113 Nov 6th, 08, 09:06 PM Looks like the better of dead camaro from the front except for the RS emblem. Btw, were you smoking when you took the pictures.. LOL
Lloyd's68 Nov 6th, 08, 10:31 PM Let's just say I was not all there. ;)
Lloyd's68 Nov 6th, 08, 10:40 PM The asking price was actually 17K. I showed the seller pics of my 68 RS (in way better condition) which I got for 17K. He was speechless when he saw pics of my car for 17K. He probably knew then that he was asking too much.
To answer some of the questions:
It does start and revs strong, but did not test drive it.
The interior is in good-great shape.
Everett#2390 Nov 7th, 08, 04:34 AM Whatever value you & the seller agree on, be prepared to take it right then, providing there is a title. No title, no money.
It is a nice car and well optioned. 327 CID/210 HP (2-bbl). Engine code, last two letters, on pass side of block next to the head will be MA.
Good luck, nice find & car.
